FCC restrictions hypothetical scenario

Hypothetically speaking... what would happen in this scenario:

 

Mr & Mrs Smith were booked for a cruise in April of 2020, but due to covid, cancelled that cruise 29 days before sail date, and one day before Celebrity announced the cruise was being cancelled.  So Celebrity would not give a full refund, instead would only give an FCC for the value of the cruise (and only 100%, not the 125% that would be the case literally just one day later). The terms were that the FCC should be applied to a cruise to be reserved by April of 2022, and sailed by Sept of 2022.  

 

Mr and Mrs Smith were not able to cruise before Sept 2022... but instead have a cruise booked for December of 2022. When they contacted Celebrity, Celebrity refused to budge, not allowing them to apply that FCC to their Dec 2022 cruise, and stating if it wasn't used by Sept of 2022, they would forfeit the entire value of that FCC... over $3000.  

 

So let's say they decide to book a cruise for Sept of 2022 to use that FCC, but have no intention of actually going. Can they cancel that Sept cruise (before final payment date) and expect a cash refund? Or another FCC that extends far enough into the future that they can apply it to their Dec 2022 booking?

 

Anyone else encountered this kind of frustration... and if so, how was it resolved?

If they cancel the other cruise they original FCC will be reinstated with the same terms as long as the cruise is cancelled prior to final payment.   After final payment any penalties will be subtracted.   Celebrity has been consistent in holding firm to the CwC FCC book by and sail by dates.   If they continue with restarting sailing this summer I doubt we will see them extend these dates.   FCC are a liability on their books that they don't want to carry any longer then they have to.

I agree with @wrk2cruise, the Smiths must use the FCC by the expiry date or lose it. While creative, booking a cruise using the FCC and cancelling it in the hope of a new FCC with new expiry date is a plan destined to fail for the reasons stated.

Celebrity is being consistent in not making exceptions to the FCC expiration date so Mr & Mrs Smith got the same answer as many of us.  Mr & Mrs Smiths suggestion of booking a cruise within the FCC window and cancelling the cruise cruise will result in forfeiture.  
 

Mr & Mrs Smith are in the same situation as Mr & Mrs Jones, Brown Johnson, and us.

No cash refund would be available in that scenario.  I would keep my fingers crossed that with the continued suspensions, that they extend the FCC deadlines again.

Sounds like Mr & Mrs Smith panicked, now they need to unpanic and book another cruise in 2022 before their FCC's expire.
