CruisinGrams Posted February 15, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 15, 2006 That would be swimming on the ship in May (lol). So what is the chance that we will be able to enjoy the pool on the Westerdam between May 21-28, 2006 Seattle - Alaska return? Someone said the pool is not heated, which is very disappointing. When we sailed on the Volendam, the Chief Engineer sat at our table and he went to turn up the heat on the pool as soon as we left Cabo San Lucas to warm the water. He said they usually kept the dome closed and the pool temp set higher in Alaska. Anyone know for sure?
fsdj1097 Posted February 15, 2006 #2 Share Posted February 15, 2006 The pools on HAL ships are definitely heated in Alaska. We sailed on the Zaandam last May and many enjoyed the pools. Both the covered and aft Lido Pools will be heated. In fact, the temperatures of both pools are posted. Have a great trip. Sam
Krazy Kruizers Posted February 15, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 15, 2006 The only time they will open the dome a little is when they have their BBQ salmon bake at lunch time.
JimandStan Posted February 15, 2006 #4 Share Posted February 15, 2006 Interesting story, we had sailed to Alaska in July, during the Summer before 9/11. Because the prices fell so dramatically after the disaster, we took another cruise in October. On the second trip, I went up to the Observation deck, and met a ships officer who was manipulating the controls for the sliding dome over the pool (do they still call it a magradome?). It was a rather hot day (about 90), and they were just starting the deck BBQ downstairs, yet he was CLOSING the dome further! Being the warm blooded sort, I asked him why he wouldn't open it further, or even completely open it. He said, "We expect it to be too windy to leave it open. We never open the dome completely in the Caribbean. The only place where we do open it completely is in Alaska, where they get some brilliantly sunny and hot, yet windless days". Enjoy your cruise, Alaska is magnificent!
CM_Mom Posted February 16, 2006 #5 Share Posted February 16, 2006 Somehow I don't think the "brilliantly sunny and hot, yet windless days" will be in May however, especially in early May when we're sailing. Although as weird as the weather has been this year, you never know.
