Here in the US, non smokers far outnumber smokers today. I don’t understand why cruise lines cater to a dying breed (pun intended) in their casinos.

I doubt Royal will make any changes to the smoking policy for the casino.    They didn't for the sailings out of Singapore (Quantum) or the sailings out of Bahamas (Adventure).

Yes, I'm sure Asia will remain smoking -- it's a different market.  Not sure about Freedom out of Miami.  We'll know soon.

Not since 2006 (not sure who the other person in "both of you" is). If you read back through my responses you would also figure out that I'm not much of a gambler, either. I would rather spend time on my balcony with a good book and a drink then spending any appreciable time in a casino. I am looking at this solely from Royal's perspective and their failure to ban smoking leads me to conclude that they have determined that allowing smoking makes them more money than banning smoking would. How they made that decision is outside my ken, they could have thrown chicken bones for all I know, but I strongly suspect that they have analyzed their data (which is more comprehensive than anything anyone on this thread has) in order to make their decision.

Until covid we were cruising 3-6 weeks per year.  Use of the casino as a smoking area by people not gambling is far more common than you want to admit.  It's constant, and NOT limited to poor weather or refueling.  We've always wondered WHY are those people smoking and socializing here and NOT gambling when the weather outside is nice.

They said the same thing about smoking in bars & restaurants -- it would chase out customers.  The truth be said, they gained more customers

My favorite cruise line that no longer exist is Renaissance it was non smoking and adults only , went under after 9/11 .

We do music charters on Celebrity every year and there adults only , I would like to try Virgin cruises.

Good for you for quitting smoking. Only based my comment on your avatar. Not knowing whether you the poster or both of you smoked.  Time to snuff this out. Way above my paygrade.

Park MGM in Vegas banned all smoking. It’s great. Cosmopolitan in Vegas has cracked down on smoking and while it’s still allowed you are supposed to be actively playing. No just sitting around smoking and not playing. The days of smoking in doors, Casinos or not are likely numbered. It’s just a matter of time before more and more Casinos go smoke free. The main reason is the healthcare costs for dealers are going up and will continue to go up costing casino companies money. All the dealer unions involved in casinos have been pushing smoke free gaming floors for years. It will eventually happen. Now will that translate to  cruises? Maybe, maybe not as cruise lines give Jack about their crews well being. I think eventually most cruise lines will be smoke free inside.

A long time ago I worked for a major hospitality company. I was in mid-management. The food and beverage division loved smokers because they were always the highest paying per table. They ate more and drank more. They drank a lot more. They were a revenue machine. It was a real disappointment to F&B when the non-smoking trend started.

Ah, gotcha. Yes, we are both former smokers. As far as DW is concerned stopping smoking in the casino would increase her time in it because she could then walk through it to get to the other side of the ship instead of going around but she gambles less than I do.

Eventually it might happen, but I don't think it's going to happen until the cruise line see a big shift in the demographics of their passengers (they have the best data available from all of their sources so their guesses are more accurate than any of ours can be). What happens at land based casinos is not an accurate portrayal of what would happen at a ship based casino.

 

And right now the cruise line is more worried about getting back on its feet after being on hiatus for over a year. The very last thing that they want to do is upset any apple carts by making significant changes that don't have to be made.

Truthfully the strong perfumes and cigarette smoke bother me.  It was the only positive of mask wearing while vaccinated.  I hate walking through casino with the smoke and perfumes trying to disguise body odor.  I prefer clean people who don't smoke and bathe/use deodorant.

Just my observation but that's pretty much the only test that needs to be done. All the stats are right there.

 

 

I am sure that through many means Royal is well aware of how busy each side is and know how much revenue is generated on the smoking side and the non-smoking side for every ship and sailing. The daily take for each table/machine is the only thing they really need to know. As you point out, this is a daily test.

RCI made a big deal about how amazing their filtered ventilation is.  Well, if the casino still reeks of stale cigarette smoke, then the new ventilation isn't doing anything.  I'll know in about 3 days!

Are you on the AOTS June 26 sailing out of Nassau?  With the limited capacity and improved filtration system, it shouldn't be as bad.  Let us know.  Happy cruising!

I'm sure that number went down even lower (assuming you meant 2018 and not 2108), with the advent of CV19.  The most recent studies on the correlation between smoking and casino / gaming revenue all point to even or increased revenue as a result of a smoking ban.  I don't see why it would be any different at sea.
