get rid of smoking in the casino

Recommended Posts

Not a smoker or gambler but DW does gamble and when I stop by to see how much we’re losing I’m always amazed how many are milling around smoking without gambling. Some are at casino bar but many more just smoking and chatting in groups. Wife says she would gamble more but has to leave to avoid smoke so perhaps I should be grate😉ful

I can’t stand all the casino smoke.

We find many people just use  the casino as the smoking lounge. Royal Caribbean lists the casino as an allowable smoking venue so I don’t blame all those folks going in there just to smoke.

Smokers, as well as other non-players, are not allowed to sit at the table games, but there’s no restriction for non-gamblers to sit at machines. I get frustrated when someone is sitting, smoking, and not gambling on a machine that I would like to play.   The non-smoking area often doesn’t have the same machines as smoking.

In the spirit of this discussion, let me now provoke some more meaningless arguments with the following question - Would the anti-smokers accept a compromise where people were allowed to vape in the casino?  Personally vapes don't bother me as much, but then again I don't dislike cigar and pipe smoke.  Never have been a smoker so maybe that's why I can tolerate a modest amount of smoke. What I really dislike is the long-term stale ashtray vibe you get from the carpets etc that make it smell like a truck stop bathroom, even if no smokers are present.

IMHO, Covid is most certainly a change. Anyone who is asymptomatic and is blowing cigarette smoke in the air will most certainly spread those Covid virus particles further than normal respiration will. THAT is the difference and smoking is a health and safety issue not just for the carcinogens in the smoke but for Covid virus that may be carried further by the blowing action.

All my opinion but there should be some testing on how much more dangerous blowing smoke can be than normal respiration for transmitting Covid. I would bet money that blowing smoke makes the virus travel further than normal respiration and talking.

IF the data supports that than that would certainly be a consideration, but a multi-billion dollar corporation isn't going to make a guess on it.

Since ships haven't sailed out of the US yet, it's doubtful they have any recent data to go by.  The cruises out of the Bahamas are only very recent.  Asia is a different market altogether.   So it's back to the good ole drawing board.

Exactly what I've been saying, they aren't going to change anything until they see data showing that they should and they won't get the data until they start sailing again.

If any non-smoker wants a smoke free casino they should just go on Celebrity.

If you mean Royal the fact that they haven't changed the casino to non-smoking in spite of the number of complaints over the years tells me that is exactly what they are telling non-smokers to do if they really don't like current policy.

A comment made by another poster in another thread made me look and since Celebrity is owned by Royal I doubt Royal would be all that upset if a customer went from Royal to Celebrity in order to enjoy a smoke free casino.

🤣 That's the reason I like Royal and Mrs. Dawg prefers Celebrity. In the smoky end, Royal's a heck of a lot less damaging to our retirement savings account than X.

I would be more worried about the unvaccinated kids screaming belching the virus everywhere.

In the Casino?  Stay on point....as a vaccinated passenger, I'm not worried about Covid at all from a smoker in the casino.

Kids run amok all over the ship, including the casino. I know they are not supposed to, but they do anyway.
therefore the post was on point.

I never thought RC would get rid of the connoisseur clubs (cigar smokers lounge) but they did. Casinos are next. Celebrity also changed (not sure what year) the original Michaels Club from a cigar lounge to a no smoking venue (Michaels Club ((pre revolution)) or Retreat Lounge (post revolution)). "The times they are a changin".

I'm not concerned either, as I'm fully vaccinated too. My concern is the un-vaxxed people, smoking and spreading the virus in the casino to other un-vaxxed people who are smoking. How many un-vaxxed people will be wearing a mask while smoking? I think that would be NONE.

THAT is where the problem lies. It is the un-vaxxed who are not protected that concerns me. Once that Covid breakout occurs, then we will see who should have been more concerned than me. I am referring to TPTB at RCG.

Ok.....but Covid and vaccinations had nothing to do with the OP

Stay on track or this thread ABOUT SMOKING gets shut down too

I don't believe that I've ever said in this thread that Royal will never make casinos smoke-free. I think eventually it will happen. I just don't think that time is now, but I could be wrong because if Royal were to determine that the move would make them more money right now then right now is when the will do it. As a non-smoker I don't really care one way or another- I now avoid the casino because of the smoke. If it becomes smoke free I would avoid it because I cherish my time and money too much.

If Royal banned smoking in the casinos then more non-smokers would play. How many smokers would quit gambling if they banned it? If smokers quit going to the casinos then they were just there to smoke so Royal wouldn't really loose any money.

And I don't believe I ever said or implied in this thread you said that. Just sharing examples and voicing my opinion on how inside smoking venues on the ships over the years is/are being eliminated and people are still cruising with Celebrity and RC. As an x-smoker and non gambler it's the stench coming out from the casinos into the adjacent bars/lounges that bothers us.

The question is actually how many smokers would take their business to another cruise line completely.

Sorry, I guess I read too much into your post. Yes, that is a bother for us too (I almost had to take DW to medical because of an asthma attack on a competing line because we played trivia near the casino) and we have learned to avoid the venues within smelling distance of the casino. Change does happen and people do adjust.

There are those of us who enjoy a fine cigar. Most of us are aware that some find that offensive. Many of the European hotels have designated Cigar Lounges. Some lines are now installing them however, some cigar smokers find cigarette smoke offensive. What a conundrum…

Exactly this.  I'm a non-smoker, but if the rules keep pushing the smokers into smaller and smaller spaces, then the smoke in those spaces is going to get proportionately thicker.  Pretty simple.  People mill around the casino smoking because it's the only place left they can smoke indoors.  Not everyone wants to sit outside and smoke all day when it's a heat index of 110 degrees and/or pouring rain, as it often is in the Caribbean.

Ban inside smoking entirely and the next step is that people will complain about how smoky it is on the pool deck and start pushing them to ban it there too.  Pretty soon, you'll have 300 smokers standing in a 100 square foot spot somewhere outside on deck 14 and it'll look like a second funnel as the ship passes by.  Eventually, people who smoke will say "to hell with this" and move to another cruise line or off of cruising entirely if the others follow suit.

Celebrity has banned smoking inside, and it doesn't seem to be an issue.  I think you are just making stuff up for what you think will happen.  I remember when they said the bars & restaurants would go broke if they banned in door smoking, but the opposite happened.  More people flocked to the non-smoking venues.

We're all just "making stuff up."  No one KNOWS for sure what would happen, unless you have a crystal ball to which I am not privy.

The big difference in the example you give is that a bar or restaurant is a place you go to for a couple of hours.  A cruise is someplace you go for several days to several weeks.  For a smoker, it's probably not THAT hard to keep an addiction at bay through a dinner.  They're not going to want to do it for days/weeks at a time.

It might not actually be that big of a deal to ban indoor smoking either, if it stopped there.  It won't.  I've already seen a lot of people griping about half the pool deck being a smoke cloud and it rolling over to the other side of the ship, if you just continue to increase the amount of smoking going on there, it's only going to get worse.  Which will foster more complaints.  Which leads us right back to this same spot again.

Another solution is to have smoking ships and non-smoking ships, the former having ample places to smoke and the latter having none.  But then, you'll get people complaining that all the itineraries/sail dates they wanted to book are on smoking ships.  People like to complain.
