"Tortola on Legend " Can everyone get off of ship??

I just received my documents yesterday. We are sailing Legend on May 31st. There is an asterisk next to Tortola's stop and the fine print reads "Virgin Gorda Tours only" What does this mean? I made plans with Patouche charters for a 1/2 day sail. Does this mean we cannot get off of the ship if we don't book a Virgin Gorda tours? I never heard of this before. Could someone clarify this for me?

The only insight I can provide for you is as follows:

I sailed the Legend in September. We docked in Tortola on Sunday. We were told by the cruise director that the island was basically "closed" on Sundays. We got off the ship anyway and went for a walk. We spoke to some vendors who were VERY angry when we told them what the ship said. They said the Island is not "closed" on Sunday, everything is still open. Prior to my tewlling them what the cr said, they couldn't understand why there was so little traffic from a 2,500 passenger ship. I never clarified this mix up with the cruise director, nor did I look into it any further. As I recall, we were scheduled to leave Tortola fairly early in the day and we got off the ship rather late in the morning, so we did not have much time there anyway. My advice to you would be to clarify what Carnival means by "Virgin Gorda" tours only and also check with Tortola travel/visitor relations people and find out what exactly is "open and closed" while you are there.

Perhaps something else as well. Watch this space.

We sail the next cruise after you on June 8 on the Legend. Our port day in Tortola will also be on a Sunday. Haven't received docs yet, but will be curious what ours will say. Not being able to get off the ship in Tortola would be no great disaster. Of the 3 port calls, St. Thomas is the only one that I enjoy the most. Been there and San Juan a number of times. Not much for me in San Juan except for maybe a casino visit.

I didn't like Tortola. To be honest, you are better off staying on the ship and enjoying yourself there. After San Juan and especially St. Thomas you aren't missing much in Tortola.

On our last cruise, I picked up a Virgin Island screen saver. The shots of Tortola are beautiful! It doesn't look like it's much for 'shopping', but it does look like an island I'd like to 'see'. I guess I'll just have to book the legend and find out for myself

Thanks everyone for the replies. I figured you would be here Chris!! Thanks for the feedback. We will actually be in Tortola on a Saturday. I already booked a catarmaran with Patouche charters. They seem really nice. We may be the only group on it so far. They assured us that they will have us back in plenty of time. We are just doing a little snorkle trip to an island. I'll let you know how everything goes when I get back.

Hey Joleda,
We'll be cruising at the same time. Would you mind giving me some info on your catarmaran charter? I am in the process of checking things out and getting a game plan started.

I am SO jealous that you got your docs already, I was told to expect mine 7-10 days prior!!

Hi Emme, c'mon aboard. Are you on the Legend too, you didn't say. If so here is the link for our group. It is still pretty small

We are excited about the catarmaran. if you read the 1st page(I think?) on that kink, I copied and pasted the emails from Patouche. They seem really nice and personal. They email me all of the time and they are waiting for our arrival. They assured us, they will get us back in time, with even time to spare for a drink (pain killer) and some shopping. here is their link with the info. www.patouche.com I think it was $55 each. There will be only 7 of us on it so far. I didn't hear of anybody else signing up. I am going to email them soon to check. You can email them and they usually reply within a few hours. We are just going to an island or two and snorkling and relaxing. It should be fun. Let me know. maybe post on the group link, because I am always on there.

Let me know,
Dave

Hiya Dave,
Thanks for the links I surely will be checking that out. Have you snorkeled before?
Yes, we are on the Legend on the same day (May 31st. Are you driving to NY?
What is Clarks Summit near? It sounds so familiar.

Yes, we have snorkled. It's a lot of fun. The kids like it too. They are 9 and 13. Clarks Summit is next to Scranton, about 5 miles away. We are splitting the price of a van 3 ways. My sister in law and her daughter and boyfriend and a couple from Ithaca NY we met on our thread. They are driving to my house. The van service picks us up at the house, takes us to the pier and picks us up at the pier to bring us home. It was reasonable. By the time we paid for parking for 2 cars it wasn't much more. Join in on the other thread, I will be there on and off. My wife Joanne, also checks in.

Haven't been on the legend but went on the Paradise years ago and after 4 cruises, Virgin gorda is still our favorite destination. We enjoy snorkeling though and the scenery is breathtaking. Swimming in caves is something you don't get to do very often. We haven't had the opportunity since. We did not take the tour, but went ourselves from tortola and it wasn't difficult at all.

Tortola is a beautiful island - it's for beach lovers - don't plan on doing any shopping in Tortola. If you can take the excursion to Virgin Gorda, I recommend it - fantastic rock formations on the beach - you won't see anything else like this anywhere in the Caribbean. I think Tortola is our favorite island because of its natural beauty.
