You can say it as many times as you want, as that is your opinion, and how you respond to this type of information. However, there are some of us that look at relationships a little differently. What we all have in common is that we like to cruise and do it our own way. Life is short, Covid has been a dark cloud hanging over us, so seize the day in your own way! I guess that clarifies that! How exciting for her. I'm wondering how her contract will be now. She left Edge almost a month ago, so if she's on 3 months vacation, should be back mid December... Then until mid-March on Edge? Beyond is supposed to be "out" end of April. Unless she'll be on Beyond earlier to check "her" out... BTW, I'm booked on Beyond (June 2022) !!! 🌷

With LLP at the helm I guess gender rules. This has no judgement on Kate's abilities. Setting aside this silly question that is looking to find flaw in something to be celebrated, how do you know seniority didn't play any role here AND that gender did? Perhaps other more 'qualified' senior persons are/were not interested in the move at this time; and why the leap from seniority to gender. And how can you say no judgement on Kate's abilities when what you write specifically calls it into play? This certainly isn't new, but it continues to be sad that Captain Kate is forever gender first and Captain second no matter what she accomplishes. As someone else pointed out, are there discussions out there calling this out for other Captains questioning their seniority rank when they get named to another ship? Congrats to Captain Kate, well earned and deserved! Edited to add that I was like others who could not tell you who the Captain was on my sailing, that was until I sailed with Captain Kate. Did it change my cruise, no, but she brought an energy and a presence that is not forgotten and that speaks volumes to what she brings to the industry. I now have more interest in this now, as silly as that might sound to many. To each their own 🙂 Edited October 14, 2021 by poffles 5

Rare Essiesmom Posted October 14, 2021 #36 Share Posted October 14, 2021 There is a lot of work involved in bringing out a new ship, well before they hand you the key. Perhaps other more captains who have done it prefer to give others a chance. Some may not be interested. And the company wants to give others the chance. Who knows? Just rejoice. I agree with you 100% but I'll suggest that much of the problem is due to Celebrity highlighting the fact that they have a female Captain. If they would just say we have promoted a person to Captain or just say that they have reassigned a person to a new ship the reaction might be different.
Hearthosesteeldrumsplayin Posted October 14, 2021 #38 Share Posted October 14, 2021 I usually don't take notice on the ship's Captain, but I will say that Capt Kate's videos actually made me want to try Celebrity. We were booked on Edge, but alas, it was cancelled due to CoVID. I am very happy for her to take the helm of Beyond, and now I might just look at sailing on her because of the Captain. Do I normally care? No. But given the opportunity, I will specifically look for Capt. Kate, all other factors being equal.

morfred Posted October 14, 2021 #40 Share Posted October 14, 2021 (edited) I do not mean this in any negative way but I do not care in the least who my captain is anymore than my bus driver or my pilot. I think the fact that there is so much explicit historical sexism barring women from bridges, and the fact that it still generates so much hate on forums like this, is why it is important to bring it up.

Here's the problem for me and probably many others. I spent nearly 40 years working for a large corporation that was focused on eliminating any discrimination based on race, sex, age, etc. The corporate message was only to judge people on their job performance and capabilities and all of these other characteristics were supposed to be invisible. For the most part this worked and there was very little discussion about these other characteristics when someone was promoted or given a new assignment. Suddenly in today's society these other characteristics are front and center and promotions and new assignments seem to concentrate on these side characteristics and not a person's capabilities and experience. The result is people are going to question why someone got the job and are they really qualified. I honestly don't know anything about Captain Kate's qualifications, but perhaps this entire discussion would be better served if some of these press releases mentioned some of her experience and qualifications instead of focusing on the first female Captain. Show the public how she really is the best person for the job. This is really the best approach for Celebrity, Captain Kate and any other females that desire to follow in her footsteps.

The official video didn't make any mention of her gender, just her face and name. The press released mentioned plenty about her experience including her helming the Summit, Equinox and Edge since 2015 and her father telling her that she could be a ship captain when she grew up. And lots about her charisma that has made her extremely popular which is why her name connected with a ship is a headline. Did you actually read the press release? Apparently not! To me, it seems that you're the one doubting her capabilities. Maybe instead, you should be questioning why she's still the only female captain in the entire industry almost 6 years later, instead of questioning her qualifications.
macaroni Posted October 14, 2021 #48 Share Posted October 14, 2021 So, if she is back at work in France in January and will be the Captain when the Beyond sets sail, how long before she takes vacation again and then returns? I am a little disappointed…I was looking forward to seeing her on our Edge cruise in January…not that I would plan trips around a Captain, but would have liked to have met her. We also have Beyond booked for October…hope she is onboard then!

She was the first "American Female Captain of a cruise liner". I'm not a cheerleader but I'm sure it's because she is a social media marketing machine for Celebrity who is trying to attract the demographic that is influenced by this type of marketing.
