Easiest & Cheapest Transfer in Ft. Lauderdale

We are flying to Ft. Lauderdale in April for our cruise the same day & we did not get air through Celebrity. What would be the cheapest & easiest transfer to the port (what is it & where?) when we arrive. Does it take long to get there?

About a $12 ten minute cab ride. It's why I love FLL. You can practically see the port from the airport.

 

There is also a Publix (grocery store) with a good wine area on the way if you want to pick up wine, soda or water to carry on.

This is the easiest decision you will make... Take a Cab !!! Ask the driver to take you to Port Everglades. One of the best things about Cruising out of Ft Lauderdale, is that you are about 10 minute cab ride, from the airport to the pier. It does not get any easier than this.

And most of the 10 minutes is waiting to pass the security booth! Probably the best and easiest transfer of any port.

THe airport might also offer something. Used to be if you rented a car, the rental agency would take you directly to the ship upon termination of the rental. Of course only good if you were in town pre-cruise. Now that all rental agencies opperate together, not sure how FLL may offer this benefit.

 

I agree a taxi is the most painless. And yes, it is right there by the airport. Depatures to the east take right off over the crusie ship area.

The rates have gone up. We've not been able to do it for less than $18 in December or January. Traffic can be a hold up, running the meter higher.

Easiest? Walking. (We did that once with rolling luggage when we had a flight that was scheduled 6+ hours after disembarkation.) The walk wasn't bad and a good way to address a few too many midnight buffets.

 

Best of all, it was pretty fast and very interesting. Took us only about 1-1/2 hours at a leisurely pace.

 

Now another cheap way is to take the car rental shuttle to the rental area, then get off and look for the shuttle to the port. Then board that shuttle and be taken right to the ship.

 

But back to reality. FLL and SAN (San Diego) have to be the best cities for cruise passengers. In both cases the taxi fares are very inexpensive because the port is so close. Unless you are uncomfortable making your own way to the ship, there's no advantage at all to using the Cruise Line's transfer service.

The car hire bus thing no longer works like it used to. Last year, you could take the shuttle bus to the outlying depot and then the other one to the ship for free. There is now a special in-airport concourse with all the car rental agencies in and they have special buses to the port. The driver will want to see a rental agreement or receipt before you can get on.

In November Avis took us to the port for free upon returning a rental car we had rented. Seems like it depended on how busy they were, how many employees on duty, etc so you couldn't count on it but this works only if you have a precruise car rental. I had planned on taking a taxi but the agent that we turned the car in to offered, he suspected we were on a cruise due to the amount fo luggage we had. I tipped the driver but otherwise no extra charge. The driver mentioned he had made 6 trips that day so far and this was about noon and only two ships in port. On busy days with many ships in port it may not work as well.
