serene56 Posted May 10, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 10, 2004 The exemption for each Guest returning from the Western Caribbean to the U.S. is a total of U.S. $800 worth of duty-free merchandise (retail price) from Grand Cayman, Cozumel etc. Each Guest 21 and older may acquire 1 liter of alcohol and Guests 18 and older are limited to 200 cigarettes and 100 cigars (excluding Cuban cigars). These limits are mandated by U.S. law and are subject to change. Vidimom Posted May 10, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 10, 2004 You can buy as much as you can carry, but you have to pay duty taxes on the bottles over your limit (2 people = 2 bottles) We always buy extra and the duty is based on the alcohol content per bottle. We found the lower the content of alcohol, the cheaper the duty (Kahaula was dirt cheap). If you want to buy extras, just make a list of what you bought, the size bottle (liter, 750 liter, etc.) and the alcohol content which is on the label to the room designated for customs declaration and they will let you know how much you owe (last time we had 5 extra bottles, mainly kahaula and didn't get charged at all!). LCSherwin Posted May 10, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 10, 2004 Four words for you... Eastern Caribbean, St. Thomas In addition to your one liter per person, you get another 6 liters per person in St. Thomas (not that we wanted to carry that much back). The prices on some things were great. Liter of Kahlua - 12 dollars. Glen Morangie Port Cask Single Malt Scotch - 28 dollars (costs 54 up here). tjevans Posted May 10, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 10, 2004 Speaking of duties, does Customs every check those forms? We were completely honest and declared all our alcohol purchases (10 liters total). Customs just took the form and let us through. Can we expect a bill for the duties? BTW, if you like Amaretto (sp?) check out the Pirate's Grotto in Grand Cayman. It was $13 for a 1L bottle of Disarono. <applet code="countdown.class" CODEBASE="http://*************/java-sys" width="203" height="25"> <param name="font" value="lcdb0"> <param name="year" value=2004> <param name="month" value=4> <param name="day" value=18> <param name="hour" value=18> </applet> Carnival Conquest 4/18/
