matamanoa Posted December 30, 2021 #3 Share Posted December 30, 2021 we took a whole day private tour in 2017 with Lorna Brown from Orkney Tours. We had a fantastic day and plan on doing the same tour in Aug. of 2022. Contact Lorna at seeorkneyweb@gmail.com. Barb
LondonTowner Posted February 9, 2022 #4 Share Posted February 9, 2022 We did a tailor made private tour as my partner is interested in WWII history and a Radio Ham. I can’t remember the name of the company as it was a few years ago, but I’d contacted the Orkney Tourist Board and they recommended the company. They also gave me details of all the tour companies operating there.

Adventures ahead Posted June 18, 2022 #7 Share Posted June 18, 2022 Can highly recommend www.myorkneytours.co.uk. In summer 2019, did a 7.5 hr bespoke small group tour that included Maeshowe and Skara Brae.

We had originally planned on a ship's excursion which would have taken in the main sights but my partner was unwell in the morning so we missed it. Instead, had a wander round Kirkwall. It's a large village so that doesnt take too long. The most interesting thing was the cathedral which, most unusually, is inter-denominational. Missing the tour was a bit of a disappointment. Knowing we would visit Scapa Flow, I'd planned to pay my respects to the sailors from the Stockport area who lost their lives at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. rsquare Posted June 20, 2022 #9 Share Posted June 20, 2022 There are a lot of stone age ruins on the Orkneys, and if your interest run in that direction, you would want to book with Orkney Archeology Tours (https://www.orkneyarchaeologytours.co.uk). We had a wonderful day with Caz Mamwell, one of the founders of the company, a day which included Skara Brae, Maes Howe and the Stones of Stenness, as well as some non-archeology sights such as Scapa Flow and a chapel build by WWII Italian prisoners. There is more history crammed into those small islands than in many larger places, and these are the people who will make it come alive.
