Rare scubacruiserx2 Posted March 5, 2022 Author #151 Share Posted March 5, 2022 Before we disembark know that it is a bit of a process from where we are . As independent travelers our goal is the front gate ASAP where we can meet our guide and there are lots of white roofed taxis that you can rent . Barbados and the cruise lines has placed a bit of an obstacle course ( a tourist trap ) in between . It's not a private one owned by Carnival or Disney but more of a co-operative between the cruise line , port and local authorities . We tried to walk to the left toward the gate but were not permitted to do so and we were steered to the right and to follow the people into the long building . Rare scubacruiserx2 Posted March 6, 2022 Author #152 Share Posted March 6, 2022 (edited) Upon entering the mall we had an eye scan for a temperature check and you have to wash your hands . Then you are free to wander the length of the mall until you reach the end where it U-turns and you walk the length of the mall in the opposite direction . At this point you can exit outside under a tin roof where the cruise's tours are waiting and other people are selling tours at the point of purchase . It was still a couple of blocks to walk past the taxis and finally the port's gate and freedom Edited March 6, 2022 by scubacruiserx2

busterfla Posted March 7, 2022 #167 Share Posted March 7, 2022 Lion fish is a very good "white" fish. Many restaurants in South Florida are serving it. A win-win for us, great fish, remove a non-native fish that is crowding out the reefs. The quills are the dangerous part of the fish. Don't try to handle them without proper training. Most are caught here by spear gun

Rare scubacruiserx2 Posted March 8, 2022 Author #169 Share Posted March 8, 2022 (edited) We were running a couple of hours late leaving Barbados and so we Emailed our next guide to let her know that we may be late . We were able to make up an hour and a half and so we were only 1/2 hour late . Preparing to go ashore . Tours were sold on shore We asked people here if they knew Annie and they said that the man holding a license plate was her husband . We talked to Him and asked him to call her and she told him to tell us to sit down on a bench and wait for her . Annie was conducting business and so we needed to wait until she was ready for us . When she did have time for us she walked us to a corner to wait for her while she got her car to pick us up . Wash hands and feet check , wear mask the whole time inside and out double check . Are we ready ? Edited March 8, 2022 by scubacruiserx2
Rare scubacruiserx2 Posted March 8, 2022 Author #170 Share Posted March 8, 2022 (edited) When we got in the van we requested to begin in the East to take advantage of the light for photos . Annie said that the ring road around the island is one way and that we had to go that way . When I asked if that meant that we couldn't go East she said that we could go East . I asked her once again if we could begin in the East with the sun at our backs for photography and she said that we couldn't because she doesn't control the sun . She began her tour showing the English influence here . The English oiled and sold African slaves in the park that we drove by We stopped on the road to look at the bird tree . Annie told us that the birds go to work in the morning and come back in the evening unless a Hurricane was coming . A drive by of the Carib Brewery . Annie touched a little on the Indentured Irish who were forced under Cromwell to be sent to the Caribbean against their will . This was before African slavery began . What would an Irish person do with 400 pounds of sugar ? I did mention that my wife was of Irish ancestry . A drive by of a medical and a veterinary schools This was followed by another drive by , this time a large Chinese dormitory under construction . We were told that they maintain a strong relationships with China , Cuba and Venezuela . Edited March 8, 2022 by scubacruiserx2
Rare scubacruiserx2 Posted March 8, 2022 Author #171 Share Posted March 8, 2022 (edited) Annie suggested that we get out and look at the ledge here as it was very steep . It was a nice photo with the light at my back . She told us that a couple of men had fallen to their death from here after having had adulterous affairs . Did I mention that she had 2 previous husbands ? Our next stop was by the road with a long story about Bloody Point . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalinago_genocide As the story goes the Kalinago people wanted to ambush and kill all of the English and French settlers . A woman named Barbe who had been abducted from another island by the Kalinago people told the English and the French of the plans and the French and English united in a pre -emptive strike of their own . They split the land . We next passed by here And made a stop at the Wingfield Estate sugar mill ruins . We didn't really want to see these and it looked like rain , but we did it anyway . We stayed beneath these ruins until the rain stopped Annie began asking what we knew about Cotton while showing it to us . I explained that my ancestors were indentured servants that came to the new world from Poland to take care of the family of a rich farmer and help them as unskilled labor picking cotton during the Depression . My mother picked for many years until school forced her to quit and the war began . They became sharecroppers to the farmer after they worked their transportation debt off and had a small dirt farm for subsistence . The word Slave comes from the root word Slav . I remember going to the cotton gin when I was a kid and we got to try picking at my grandparents farm in Texas . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavs_(ethnonym) Edited March 8, 2022 by scubacruiserx2
Rare scubacruiserx2 Posted March 8, 2022 Author #172 Share Posted March 8, 2022 (edited) Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik A number of the ships tour buses had caught us at the last stop and were here en masse all looking to share the bathrooms and the 8 acre grounds . The grounds here remind of some of the places where live but with elevation . We have a Batik place that we used to use for custom made shirts in Cozumel so we had hope to leap frog ahead of the crowd by skipping the presentation . We did like the huge 400 year old tree which reminds us of another tree near the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires . Rare scubacruiserx2 Posted March 8, 2022 Author #174 Share Posted March 8, 2022 We now made a U turn and headed back toward the cruise port but made a left toward the peninsula instead of a right to the cruise port . We were going to where I had requested in the morning . We now had a slow moving caravan in which every vehicle passed us . Looking South toward Nevis . Returning to the port . We didn't stop for lunch but Annie dropped us off where she picked us up and suggested that we eat there . We made a beeline to our bathroom and a nice Cool walk to GiGi's for a quick bite and a beer . There's no place like home - even if it's only for 3 more days !
