madforcruising Posted February 23, 2006 #2 Share Posted February 23, 2006 You have to Tender at ports that can´t handle a ship that big like the one you are on. So your ship won´t be docked at the pier but Anchored out at sea. They bring you ashore (tender) with smaller tender boats. These tender boats can either be some of the ships life boats or sometimes there are boats from ashore used for the tendering. The boats come alongside of the cruiseship and the ship lowers a plattform where you board the tender boat.
BPWJR Posted February 23, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 23, 2006 Some stops, ship does not tie-up at a dock/peir where you can walk off, but are anchored off-shore in some manner. To get you to the port or beach, must take a smaller boat - known as a "tender" - to get to the land. Problem, big ships with lots of people can take awhile to get all who want off on-shore.
