Laplayaperson Posted May 31, 2022 #1 Share Posted May 31, 2022 For those that have been rerouted due to weather, what was your experience as to where the alternative locations were that Carnival routed to on your cruise? Leaving this weekend for the Bahamas and it appears a storm may be brewing. Also, what constitutes a reroute? Would a tropical storm have to be named to reroute, or would they reroute based on observed conditions?
vwrestler171 Posted May 31, 2022 #2 Share Posted May 31, 2022 It all depends on the weather and if the storm will be there when the ships are scheduled to be there. I've been at a port and the next day it was hit with a tropical storm. Also arrived at a port, the day after a tropical storm.
Rare lazydayz Posted June 1, 2022 #3 Share Posted June 1, 2022 Doesn’t have to be a named storm. Carnival will do its best to protect its ship and give you good weather.
csm5986142 Posted June 1, 2022 #4 Share Posted June 1, 2022 (edited) We were on short a cruise several months ago that went nowhere. We were first supposed to stop in Cozumel, but were diverted to meet up w/a coast guard helicopter for a crew member needing emergency care. When we couldn't make it to Cozumel, we were diverted to Progresso, but when we arrived there, the weather was bad (high winds) and they closed the port. So we returned to Galveston making no port stops. Considering Carnival had no control over these issues, I thought they were extremely generous - we were refunded 50% of our cruise fare, give a 50% credit on a future cruise, and $25 OBC. I'd take that deal in a New York minute!
PelicanBill Posted June 1, 2022 #6 Share Posted June 1, 2022 I have been on many reroutes and delays. It takes a strong storm to be a threat to safety, but comfort is another thing and often controversial when a ship sails through or follows a storm closely (NCL has a few incidents of this). Choosing an alternate path and ports are a function of sailing time and distance, and availability of space and ability of some small ports to muster up resources if short notice. In the east I have been rerouted to Nassau, having a lot of dock space, but once it was a 3pm arrival after another ship left to create space. In the west, Cozumel is a popular spot having many docks. And you can tender there, or at Grand Cayman easily. Those are within reach for many itineraries to change and still return to Florida or reach a next port.

If anyone in your party has a problem with motion sickness, make sure they have medication with them. It will especially be needed if your cabin is on an upper deck and either fore or aft. Seas will be high a great distance from the storm's center.
Clarasgrandma Posted June 2, 2022 #8 Share Posted June 2, 2022 We’ve missed Costa Maya and Grand Cayman. Both became sea days.
xyzcruiser Posted June 4, 2022 #9 Share Posted June 4, 2022 I have had several things happen. Reroute to different port, skip ports, cruise 200 miles away and "wait it out" thus skipping all but one port, have to leave port within in 1 hr of arriving (that was Grand Turk, they blew the emergency horn to get everyone back on board), cut cruise short and return to homeport (fcc ), and changing order of ports visited. Still had a great time on all, although the one I ended up with 6 seadays was a little boring until I won a jackpot in the casino! You never know what might happen, just be determined to enjoy the ride.
Elaine5715 Posted June 4, 2022 #10 Share Posted June 4, 2022 I was on a sailing in 2017 as Maria was heading towards Puerto Rico. The port stop order was changed and we never had even rough seas.

I'd love a 50% deal .. a real 50% off. Not a sale that is up to this amount but not much. Waiting for a deal or not booking right now. Galveston rarely can be rerouted as just not as many choices they can reach.
beachbum6264 Posted June 4, 2022 #12 Share Posted June 4, 2022 We've had a lot of weather changes - Eastern Caribbean changed to Western Caribbean, Western changed to Eastern, port order changed, ports changed, a 7 day turned into a 9 day (thanks Hurricane Frances). Loved every minute!
