hotsauce126 Posted July 5, 2022 #126 Share Posted July 5, 2022 I’m pretty libertarian but in a confined space like a cruise ship any indoor common area that allows smoking is a pain for all nonsmokers. If you want to go to the casino you have to breathe in secondhand smoke the whole time and walk out smelling like a cigarette butt. I can’t imagine all the people defending casino smoking singing the same tune if they suddenly let you smoke weed in the casino

Wlhoeft Posted July 5, 2022 #128 Share Posted July 5, 2022 I’ve been on 5 cruises with RC since the restart. Casinos were packed except for our cruise in February on Freedom. In Mid Jan - mid Feb, masks were required in all indoor spaces because of Omicron. Casino was also no smoking. It was dead in there. Considering that sailing was about 70% capacity, compared to the other 4 cruises that were 25%-50%. Never have seen a casino so empty on a cruise.

Interesting, we were on HOTS in Nov/Dec for a b2b when masks were required and the casino was non-smoking and busy even though they were at about 40-50% capacity and I heard tons of people talking about how much they enjoyed the casino not being smoky.

Our January cruise with smoking temporarily banned and everyone had to mask up the casino was dead. they would start to clean up to close by 11 every night since it was so empty. I spoke with Casino Host and she said due to the masks and no smoking temp policy that all ships were experiencing very low casino play. Then boarded the same ship in March with no masks and smoking permitted and casino was packed and ship was sailing at 60% capacity.
Wlhoeft Posted July 5, 2022 #131 Share Posted July 5, 2022 The first 3 sailings on Symphony 2021, Freedom 2021 and Mariner 2021were masked with vaccinated areas. You didn’t have to wear a mask in casino and could smoke. Casino was packed. Feb 22 on Freedom sailing masks everywhere and no smoking in casino. It was dead. Also it was a B2B. April 2022 on Independence B2B you didn’t have to wear masks at all. Casino was back to smoking. Packed!
Rare cruising sister Posted July 5, 2022 #132 Share Posted July 5, 2022 I don’t think you can generalize smoking and no mask to increase casino use. When cruising first started up people were still nervous about crowded areas. As people loosen up so has their behavior. The casinos are not full of smokers but the smell sure is. I don’t find that the case, especially if drink packages are factored in… but now we are getting way off topic.

I think you can attribute it more to the mask rule more than the smoking. On odyssey last year I stuck to vaccinated only areas for the most part — not out of anxiety just because I don’t find it enjoyable to wear a mask
joeyancho Posted July 5, 2022 #135 Share Posted July 5, 2022 Smoking, drinking, and gambling all go hand in hand. You cannot remove one from the equation. Non-smoking has been tried on cruise ships and in casinos. It always fails. The casino is the second largest source of Revenue for a cruise ship. They are not going to make them non-smoking anytime soon. I think that is a generation or two away. 1

If you've read the entire thread, smoking has dropped 40% in the last 15 years. BTW, there's no rule that those go together lol. I.e., that is not the demographic that generates the revenue. Edited July 5, 2022 by BirdTravels

Could you elaborate?

Rare rudeney Posted July 6, 2022 #141 Share Posted July 6, 2022 I have a simple solution to this problem. For each guests the enters the MDR wearing pants on regular nights, and at least a suit and tie on "formal" nights, give them a special pin to wear that permits them to smoke in the casino. You wear shorts to the MDR - no smoking got you! 😜
