Max and Ruby Posted August 10, 2022 #126 Share Posted August 10, 2022 Last cruise was our first Diamond cruise and with the 4 free drinks. We are not big drinkers, but I was loving the bottled water. My kids are also Diamond and I was telling them to get "the bottled water" and give to me. I drink a lot of water per day. 🙂 Tipped $1 for each bottle of water. I know, I know $13 alcoholic drink vs Bottled water. But it worked for our family. We don't drink coffee either. I did try a few alcoholic drinks this past cruise, and will try some new ones next time "just because it is free". But my wallet was huge with those dollar bills! ( Better exchange then USD at the time). I tipped the Mexican cliff diver with pesos and got a dirty look. I played dump and said " sorry, I am from Canada and Do not have usd. Wait till I get home and argue with my bank that they gave me the wrong currency for your country". He took it. I understand they prefer usd. But to look down on the currency of their own country. Seriously Yes they willingly accept USD, but usually want which ever currency yields the the most. Mexico does limit the amount of USD you can deposit each month, so If they favor US, they are spending it

Nothing more is required, but a little tip is just a little extra thank you.

No receipt. Bring cash. You don't have to bring singles. You can break larger bills at both Guest Services and the casino cashier. 🙂

emeraldcity Posted August 11, 2022 Author #134 Share Posted August 11, 2022 Thank you. I was a bit disappointed in the first go-round, but I see the thread was revived and my actual question has been addressed. So it's possible that Royal is giving them compensation in some way, but it's really unknown. And a dollar a drink for an easy pour, but $2 for a frozen concoction would be more appropriate.

We were without cash and I put it on the receipt - way too much trouble. It didn't appear until late the next day as a separate transaction. Next time, remember who served you and find them again later in the cruise, it's easier.

There's no receipt for Diamond vouchers. They are deducted from your seapass.

I don't know how you gleaned that from this thread. RC does NOT compensate them for voucher drinks.

nferr Posted August 11, 2022 #142 Share Posted August 11, 2022 (edited) Interesting conversation. November will be my first cruise Diamond. I always got the drink package before and gratuity was included. I never carry money on the ship, just my room card, so I guess I'll have to carry a bunch of singles around. Not real happy about that. I would rather you get a receipt where you can just add a tip and it goes on your room charge. If you do that the nosy tipper police will be watching and assume you don't tip. IMO, we prefer tipping when we get our drinks. But either way would be OK. Could use a bunch of OBC that way.

So what's the difference to the bartender when someone tips in cash vs. writing in an amount on the on the "additional tip" line of the receipt? Also, if you are using a "voucher" for a drink, can't you ask for a receipt to write in and additional tip? I would prefer to do that and have it charged to my onboard account (possibly using OBC) rather than walk around with a bunch of cash.

Who wants to lug around a big wad of singles when cruising? Put the tip on the receipt is much easier. That's how it's done if you don't have vouchers. I know you can get a $0 receipt with the beverage packages so I'd assume you can with the vouchers, I've just never had the opportunity to use a voucher, not being diamond yet. Printing out the receipt... waiting for it to be filled out, signed and returned... it all takes time and slows down the bar service for everyone.

I have forgotten to bring cash and let the bartender know that I would like to tip them and they just give me a receipt to add it and sign.

Yeah, I know how that would work. I wasn't criticizing your thinking just making a sarcastic remark about a certain tip police. There is at least one on this thread that believes if he doesn't actually see someone tip the server that person is stiffing the server. I obviously disagree.
