jules71 Posted September 4, 2022 #1 Share Posted September 4, 2022 Do the ships’ medical centers stock Paxlovid? What are the protocols onboard now if someone tests positive for Covid?
nascarcruiser Posted September 5, 2022 #2 Share Posted September 5, 2022 Not everyone is a candidate for it. Only those with certain medical conditions so I doubt it.
not-enough-cruising Posted September 5, 2022 #3 Share Posted September 5, 2022 I can’t imagine them having Paxlovid , it is hard to find in many terrestrial pharmacies.

A lot have had rebound infections. It's hardly a "cure all". As far as I know and what I've seen those positive haven't required it. I'm not sure why OP is asking this question. There have no zero reports of serious infections onboard. Let's all realize the current infections are not the infections of 2020. From what I've seen I don't want to be given Paxlovid. Stick93 Posted September 5, 2022 #8 Share Posted September 5, 2022 (edited) If you are concerned for paxlovid on board - a cruise might not be for you. Covid is on every ship. Sometimes it’s hiding and sometimes it isn’t. But most people who get Covid are not taking paxlovid, and the ones who have a are seeing a higher chance of rebound - just ask the president, his wife and lord Fauci. Rare BirdTravels Posted September 5, 2022 #9 Share Posted September 5, 2022 Except for that Carnival Vista vaccinated passenger who tested COVID positive while on the ship, and eventually died after being disembarked in Belize and subsequently medivac'ed to Tulsa. Based on timing, she probably brought it onboard with her.
Joseph2017China Posted September 5, 2022 #10 Share Posted September 5, 2022 I'm thinking if you have to ask a question like this, than a cruise is not for you......stay safe and stay home.....The ship is not a full service medical facility, and is not a full service pharmacy either.

She was also 77 and appeared to have other commodities.

Rare crewsweeper Posted September 5, 2022 #15 Share Posted September 5, 2022 I think you have to be high risk for serious COVID, which in med speak means you have pre-morbidity conditions or are in a high risk group, in order to get a prescription. And of course you'll get dinged for $500+ for the treatment.
Bushdog Posted September 5, 2022 #16 Share Posted September 5, 2022 I do not minimize the novel coronavirus and its risks. I am fully vaxxed and boosted as is my family. As someone who has cruised only 10-12 times in my life, I'm 100% sure, confirmed 1 person died on a cruise I was on. And I'm about 85-90% sure on another cruise I had a fatality. People get sick, especially older people with underlying conditions. Older people seem to die on cruises sometimes (younger people more rarely). And it makes sense if lots of people congregate in an a place that over a period of time, some people die. I have fairly limited expectations for medical care aboard the ship whatever the illness. This sort of comes with the territory. A low, but never 0 risk.
Jasukkie Posted February 11, 2023 #17 Share Posted February 11, 2023 I didn't want to start a new thread but as of Feb 1, the FDA is no longer requiring a positive test for your provider to prescribe Paxlovid. Those at risk for complications can thus obtain it before cruising so they have it if needed. This is something to consider for people going on longer cruises. Obviously, speak with your provider about your own health circumstances and whether this would work for you. 2
Rare nimbex1970 Posted February 11, 2023 #18 Share Posted February 11, 2023 https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-is-paxlovid-rebound-and-how-common-is-it/ You still need a script. Based upon availability and home port of the ship, it might not be available, seems to be a crap shoot. Getting medical advice from people on a cruising site is always a bad idea.

I have seen it recommended for certain patients who are more at risk by a wide variety of medical doctors. Some of them have always addressed new treatments with initial skepticism until evidence is in on them.
