kasowell2 Posted September 6, 2022 #1 Share Posted September 6, 2022 We dock according to the cruise website (Princess) at 5:00 am. What time could we expect to arrive in Rome and any transfer recommendations please.
euro cruiser Posted September 6, 2022 #2 Share Posted September 6, 2022 Are you in a hurry to get into the city? In other words, are you willing to be one of the later departures from the ship or do you want to be off as soon as possible? How do you want to accomplish this transfer? There are low cost, DIY options like the train or bus, or higher cost, easier methods such as shared shuttles or a private car service. What are you looking for? Looking probably for private car service so was wondering what time to place the order to pick us up. What time can we reasonably expect to disembark? euro cruiser Posted September 6, 2022 #4 Share Posted September 6, 2022 You ought to be able to get off by 7 AM, but that puts you in the middle of rush hour traffic. If your cruise has only visited other Schengen area countries there is no passport control or customs to deal with, so it's just the time to identify and grab your bags. If you are in the car by 7:30 I would estimate arrival in the city center between 9:00 - 9:30. If you're not in a big rush to get into the city and get going, you could enjoy a leisurely last breakfast on board the ship, then meet your car service around 9:30 or so. The ride into the city at that time will be less busy.
cruisin lady ca Posted September 13, 2022 #5 Share Posted September 13, 2022 We booked a transfer from the port to our hotel in Rome with RomeCabs. The cost of a transfer from the port to either a hotel in Rome or the airport starts at 140 Euros for 1-2 people. If you get one more couple to share the ride, it brings down the cost per person a lot as a transfer for 4 people is 150 Euros. This is their website: https://www.romecabs.com/ and the transfer page can be found here: https://www.romecabs.com/transferservice/civitavecchia/ We asked to be picked up at 9 AM so we can enjoy breakfast without feeling rushed. It appears that the ride will take approximately 1 1/2 hours.
Rare Hlitner Posted September 13, 2022 #6 Share Posted September 13, 2022 The good news is that cruise ships are normally "cleared" by the authorities within a half hour after docking. If you want to arrange for a private transfer (we suggest Romecabs.com) you will generally pay extra for a pick-up before 7am. Also keep in mind that rushing into Rome at the crack of dawn will find most tourist-oriented places closed! The city begins to "open" around 9am with many places not opening their doors until 10 (and even later on Mondays). If you are planning to visit the Vatican, that can be a good early morning destination since it generally opens at 8:30 (there can be long lines). When we have been in Rome early, we often walk over to the Piazza Navona (our favorite spot in the city) for some morning cappuccino and a pastry and terrific people watching. If you are planning to take the train into Rome, there are plenty of early morning trains (you can check the schedule on the Trenitalia web site). But we have sometimes encountered the situation where shuttle buses from the pier do not even begin operating until well after 8am. For folks that love long walks (over a mile) it is usually possible to walk from the pier, through the port, and into town. But this can be a very long hike not favored by folks unless they are avid walkers. Hank

If you want to get to the Vatican early, book your tickets online. Don’t even think of standing at the ticket line. museivaticani.va
