DougH Posted September 24, 2022 #1 Share Posted September 24, 2022 Any suggestion on what to see/do in Southampton on a Sunday. Will be staying at the Ibis but legs are getting old so can't walk long distances. On previous visit I took the train to both Portsmouth and Winchester
Rare John Bull Posted September 25, 2022 #2 Share Posted September 25, 2022 (edited) In Southampton,: Just a ten-minute walk from the Ibis (albeit up a hill) https://seacitymuseum.co.uk/ is a council-run museum focussed on Titanic. Dioramas and personal stories (most of her crew were from Southampton) rather than artefacts. https://tudorhouseandgarden.com/ in old-town Southampton is a 15 minute walk (or short taxi hop) from Ibis & Ibis Budget. Only about 100 yards from the Tudor Merchant's House, https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/medieval-merchants-house/ is normally open on sundays only. City walls, Westgate Hall etc are in the same area. A further 15 minutes beyond, https://www.solentsky.org/exhibitions is a volunteer-run aircraft museum with the emphasis on aircraft with a local connection Sunday isn't sunday without a sunday roast lunch, though it's best to pre-book. In the same road as the Tudor Merchant's House are the Duke of Wellington pub https://www.dukesouthampton.co.uk/ and http://dancingmanbrewery.co.uk/. Both offer roast sunday pub lunches. Or the best but by far the most expensive is https://www.harbourhotels.co.uk/media/14595/18g-southampton-jetty-sundayset-a4-jun22-v1.pdf?1656420625 On sundays, city centre shops are open on limited hours, usually 10am to 4pm. Beyond Southampton The historic cathedral city of Salisbury is only 35 minutes by direct train (Southampton Central station is across the road from the Ibis). Much less crowded and more laid-back than Winchester, and a friendly rural atmosphere. Built in 1220 - 1255, the cathedral is younger than Winchester cathedral, but much more impressive, and has the tallest spire in the UK. And a hop-on bus to Stonehenge operates from Salisbury station. NB limitations on inside visits to the cathedral on sundays https://www.visitwiltshire.co.uk/salisbury https://www.londontoolkit.com/whattodo/salisbury.htm https://www.thestonehengetour.info/ https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ Or take the little Hythe Ferry across Southampton Water, and a taxi from Hythe about 6 miles across a corner of the New Forest to the village of Beaulieu and https://www.beaulieu.co.uk/attractions/ Altho it majors on the National Motor Museum there's also the Bishop's Palace , the Abbey ruins (sacked during Henry V111's Dissolution of the Monasteries) etc. NB arrange with the taxi driver to collect you at an agreed time, there's no taxi rank at Beaulieu https://hytheferry.co.uk/ Or the car ferry across the Solent (about an hour) to East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, then local 10 minute bus ride to Queen Victoria's favourite home, Osborne House https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/osborne/ https://www.redfunnel.co.uk/en/isle-of-wight-ferry/terminal-facilities/terminal-1-southampton/ Or 60 minutes by direct train to Portsmouth Harbour station, just 200 yards from Portsmouth Historic Dockyard & Ships https://www.historicdockyard.co.uk/ It's a shame you've not planned to spend a week in Southampton 😉😀 JB 🙂 Edited September 25, 2022 by John Bull

Possibly Ennios for lunch on a Sunday with a slightly different twist. Cheers…

Cheers… We've dined at Ennios, but not Sunday lunch. Very good. Ennios is Italian, so one might think that they wouldn't be a great venue for a roast Sunday lunch - but one of our favourites for a roast Sunday lunch is Italian - Reggina's, in Botley. But it's about 7 miles from Southampton city centre, so no good for your visit. I think Ennios will do you proud JB 🙂
DougH Posted September 27, 2022 Author #5 Share Posted September 27, 2022 Thanks for the suggestions. I would have loved to come earlier but work commitments prevented it. I really want to visit the Auto museum someday

I would love to experience an English Sunday roast lunch. Would you recommend the Duke of Wellington? I can’t go to Botley, would have to stay in Southampton. I’m not sure if Ennio’s has a roast lunch, I’ll take a look at their menu. Also, , you recommended making a reservation…would that still be applicable. Thank you so much for all your help. 😊

ladysail2 Posted October 17, 2022 #8 Share Posted October 17, 2022 I had a look at both Ennio’s Sunday lunch and The Duke of Wellington Sunday lunch. Would you have a preference? The price difference isn’t too bad…. Thanks again!

Rare John Bull Posted October 17, 2022 #13 Share Posted October 17, 2022 (edited) Of the three mentioned ........ Ennio's & The White Star Tavern have quite similar roast menus, at similar prices around £18. I don't think Ennio's roast will disappoint, and it has the advantage that you'll be staying there anyway. https://www.ennios.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Ennios-Sunday-Menu.pdf The White Star Tavern is an up-market pub, part of the Fuller's brewery. The sunday menu is basically a standard Fuller's roast but that's not a bad thing - they're probably the best pub chain for sunday roasts, and - despite my favourite sunday venue - I always associate sunday roasts with British pubs rather than Italian restaurants.. It has the advantage that it's different to where you're staying https://www.whitestartavern.co.uk/food/sunday-menu At £12.95 the cost of a roast sunday lunch at the Duke of Wellington is more the average price of pub roasts. Consequently you wouldn't expect it to be as good as Ennio's or the White Star, but value-for-,money will be the same and it's a remarkable historic pub. https://www.dukesouthampton.co.uk/menu Depends whether you want to push the boat out. The Duke is a 4-minute walk, the White Star is 8 minutes. Sunday lunches are popular in England, best to book ahead - about 10 days ahead is usually fine. From outside the UK by e-mail is best, I don't think any of them require a deposit or credit card details - they trust you to let them know if you need to cancel, even if its as little as an hour's notice JB 🙂 IMPORTANT EDIT. Just noticed the date - 5th November is Guy Fawkes Night. The guy tried to blow up Parliament centuries ago. So effigies of the feller are burned on bonfires, with fireworks & such. There'll be public displays, though they tend to be held in different places over four or five nights, Southampton on the 5th. https://www.visit-hampshire.co.uk/whats-on/mayflower-park-southampton-fireworks-p1505001 and https://www.southamptonfireworks.uk/ Edited October 17, 2022 by John Bull

I’m in agreement, as much as Ennio’s roast lunch looks nice and is convenient….I will enjoy my roast lunch at The Duke of Wellington set among historical walls. I’ve had fish&chips there before and enjoyed the ambience and people watching. I wish I enjoyed beer to make it a true pub visit, but unless they serve me beer in a shot glass, that’s about as much as I can handle. I’ll have to settle for a glass of wine. We have already purchased our Fireworks tickets at Mayflower Park. I sure hope it doesn’t rain. We are also looking forward to seeing what the food trucks offer. 😁. BTW, we were taught about the antics of Guy Fawkes in school over here in Canada. The evening will have a small significance to me! I’m looking forward to it. Thank you again!
