iwannacruz Posted October 14, 2022 #1 Share Posted October 14, 2022 Considering the Rome to Athens cruise that starts Dec 27 in Rome. What is the weather usually like at that time of year? Is the seas choppy? There is one full day at sea that I am concerned about. Also, since we will be sailing on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, will anything be open? Do you think the tours will still be going on? Any feedback from those who have sailed that time of year would be great. Thanks in advance. kcpvwill Posted October 14, 2022 #2 Share Posted October 14, 2022 I would be interested in sea conditions too at this time of year.
Rare Peregrina651 Posted October 14, 2022 #3 Share Posted October 14, 2022 Sea conditions are the same as they are at any other time of the year: unpredictable. 2 1

Seen everything from a millpond to an outflow Adriatic storm that ripped one of the gangways off the ship.
lackcreativity Posted October 14, 2022 #5 Share Posted October 14, 2022 So, there have always been fluctuations within a given season and location, some of them extreme. And of course, weather patterns of the past are not quite as reliable for the present, and that can be extreme too. Sorry that is not a helpful answer, but it is true. As far as your question about whether things will be open on shore on those two days, I can't help but would also be interested in the answer. Jan 1 is a holiday and business may or may not be open (restaurants and bars will definitely be open but may not open until after noon). Whether Viking will be running tours that day will depend on what is open in port.

Jammy Bun Posted October 15, 2022 #9 Share Posted October 15, 2022 We did a similar itinerary last year - 3 weeks Athens to Uk over Christmas and New Year - weather was mixed, but pretty calm and mild until we reached the Atlantic. We did tours in most ports, including NY Day, even though at that time strict Covid procedures were in place both on and off the ship. Nothing much was open on the days which were public holidays (NY Day), but since we weren't allowed to leave our guided tour group at all, it didn't affect our enjoyment. We were happy with ANYTHING at that time!
