It was right after the restart and we were last minute. I don’t think they had been using that cabin the first couple sailings. it seemed like they were totally unaware of the condition. The ice show, on the other hand, is always always always always always fabulous. magnificent. awesome. wonderful. superb. marvelous. Karaoke is...............a bunch of cruisers singing. There is a lot of live music on RC's ships. Other cruise lines are doing away with live music, but RC is still committed to it. And it is noticeable. This would be my 9th cruise and my fiancé's first, but be both our last. I never thought I would feel like about cruising. I use to think it was the best vacation you could possibly do for the money, but no more. We planned this cruise very spur of the moment as we had to miss the one the month before due to getting Covid. With flights, hotel overnight at port, drink package, and everything else that goes into planning a vacation and cruise we were several thousand dollars into this. We were so excited and ready to have a fantastic week of vacation but it was nothing like that and all we got was literally the FLU and an absolute horrible experience and several thousand dollars feels like it was robbed. So here goes because I guess I want to think I am not the only one who feels this way..... 1. Pricing - we had a balcony room and with taxes and all it was almost 2800 dollars given it was booked 2 weeks prior to departure I just think that this first off is a complete rip off given the quality of rooms, size, etc.... 2. Food - our food this trip was the worst I have ever had. We did the main dining, Johnny Rockets, and Buffet. All bland, tasteless, main dining room barely ever had anything on it we liked. NY strip was a sliver of meat, uncharged for lobster now, a cesar salad was a few pieces of lettuce and crouton, desserts were mediocre. 3. Drinks - we paid 800 bucks for a drink package for 4 nights for us both to literally most of the time get some watered down cocktail and at least 2 times I saw bartenders literally put half a shot in my drink and had to ask for more and say something to them. 4. Service - service was just so disappointing. Wait staff acted like they could care less even after giving them good tips the first night, at Johnny Rockets we literally sat one day waiting for food even just some fries for 35 mins...when she brought it she plopped it down and took off like dont bother me. Our room attendant had a major attitude as well and just brought us a card told us his name and took off again like dont bother me. Absolutely nothing like it use to be like you were treated like a king and queen...that is over. 5. Room - our room was filthy - someone had popped apparently a confetti popper prior to us getting there by previous guests and it was still all over the floor, on desk, balcony everywhere. Room attendant came and half way cleaned up after we pointed it out. Our sheets has ripped spots and ragged worn spots in so many places along with just looking like they had been through it for way too long. Our bathroom had mildew spots in places and just looked run down. Def not a room worth 2700 bucks! 6. Entertainment - lame...our comedian - so lame, the ice show just looked like a D rated high school performance honestly, karaoke was just a bunch of kids singing, never saw a live band on the ship when we were out and about, and missed Grease so couldnt tell you much about that..... 7. Excursions (blue lagoon and coco cay) - I was so excited about Blue Lagoon but it was just a huge disappointment..an almost hour boat ride on a hot smelly boat to go to a tiny island with just mediocre beach with tons of raging kids everywhere?! Coco I wanted to enjoy but was beginning of the end for us due to getting sick 8. CROWDS - OMG I have been on ships 3x the size of this one like Harmony and Symphony and never seen crowds like this one....everywhere a line or crowd, or being herded like cattle into and out of places. Never a chair for all the chair savers, so just move their crap out of the way for them to come back and give you a dirty look. Never a spot in a hot tub. Being herded into and out of areas for shore excursions. 9. WE GOT THE FLU ON SHIP - Our morning getting off at Coco Cay we both brought up how we both felt unusually tired. So we instantly thought could we have Covid again ( we had just had it 3 weeks prior) and thought surely not. We are both healthy 40 year olds. We had done plenty of WASHY WASHY and hand sanitizing etc. We dont touch our faces or bite nails etc. By 12 at Coco we felt awful....tired, achy, miserable....so we go back to ship.....we go back to room, fall asleep....miss all that useful time to enjoy a good beach...we wake up at about 4 to find we are even worse. We know something is wrong....so we stay IN OUR ROOM all evening....no appetite.....got a pizza brought to room and some drinks which we couldnt really stomach. By the next morning the day of departure we were horrible....chills, sore throat all that....it was all we could do to get to airport and get home that day to find out when we got home and to doctor we were flu positive and STILL trying to get over it all today! So there are probably a lot of things I missed in this but in other words I am over cruising....its just not fun and after all we went through on this trip I am done. Just wondering if anyone else feels this way and completely ripped off!? We took a beach trip last August and paid a fraction of the cost including flight, dinners, drinks, activities etc. Wondering others likeminded thoughts. That is a shame about cruise. I agree with you on some points but it looks like you just had the perfect storm. I have had the Flu on a cruise and last October disembarked the Allure and despite having my flu shot one month prior ended up with the flu. There is a big difference with the short cruises as opposed to the 7 day and longer. If I were you I'd try again where you have time to research what to do in the ports. My husband and I were on 2 5 day sailings on 2 separate lines in August and December. I couldn't stand the crowds. We would just find a nook. But we still had a great time on both.

After getting to D+, we were just over everything about cruising. Can't even really say just what it was about cruising that caused us to be done, but overall, it no longer felt special. We have since focused on doing destination trips and with the right planning, these trips have been tremendously fulfilling. I suggest giving cruising a break, then you can give it another try and see if you've missed it. That's what we're doing in 2 weeks. 3

Lobster is never served as a main course in the MDR on short cruises, so the only way to get one is to order the upcharge one. I think I finally figured out why the rant happened at all - 40 YO takes his fiancee on her first cruise - a 4-night booze cruise at the peak of college spring break out of a port surrounded by 3-4 major Florida universities. 500-1000 co-eds on board with about 4 yards of fabric amongst all their bikinis that start partying at dawn or are waking up from the last night still on the pool chairs that they passed out on, being hit on by an equal number of preppies with raging hormones that never stopped drinking last night and aren't about to stop anytime soon, and his fiancee sees firsthand why he loves to cruise.😱 There is no way that ever ends well.
feeloftheocean Posted March 17, 2023 #87 Share Posted March 17, 2023 The bigger question is: has quality gone down (for example with the food, free or not) and prices gone up (more than the inflation) at the same time? We just need to be honest about that. Then it's everybody's decision to cruise or not, but it's still good info to have.
Rare nimbex1970 Posted March 17, 2023 #88 Share Posted March 17, 2023 on my 20th cruise this May. On my back to back Allure, I can agree that there were signs of being short staffed, although everyone was kind and smiling. We had no one running drinks to us on lounge chairs and the bars were crowded. I miss the excellent alcohol service. Food is subjective, but it is certainly NOT increasing in quality. I know that for us a 4 night cruise is not what we prefer, it's a different demographic, we do 7 nights minimum and it works for us. Why the OP is complaining about pricing is beyond me.. you knew what the fee was and paid it. So that confuses me. I had to book two inside and one balcony room this May as that's all that the budget provided, I'm not going to complain about the inside room that I picked... I would just ask the room steward to touch up a few places or leave a kind sticky note. About the shows, well I like in Orlando, no cruise ship is going to provide the same quality entertainment that I get in Disney or Universal, so my expectations are adjusted. I don't know. Instead of a go-with-the-flow attitude that could have been passed on the finance, it appears that finding fault was the choice made. The OP will find these same faults on any inclusive or land-based vacation and that's just sad. One RCCL in May and 2 on NCL booked, I don't see myself ever NOT cruising.

Being that this is a cruise enthusiast forum, you will likely not get many sympathetic ears. But there is some good advice given. The only thing I can add is that if you had 8 good cruises and 1 bad, spur of the moment cruise, odds are the next cruise will be good if you put in the same effort in planning & timing as you did with the first 8. If that one is just as bad, then yes, you might be over cruising. And there is nothing wrong with that as peoples needs and expectations change. Good luck with whatever you decide. barbeyg Posted March 17, 2023 #90 Share Posted March 17, 2023 I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I agree with those who have said that we can all have a 'not so great' cruise. I've experienced those before. It hasn't kept me from cruising because I've had some bad land vacations as well, and love cruising. I also tend to see the glass half full most of the time, and shrug off the poor experiences I am able to, deal with the rest. We personally won't sail anything less than 7 nights because a shorter cruise has a completely different feel to it. And we just aren't ready to exit after a few nights. Also, that was a whopping amount you were willing to pay for the cruise. There are bargains out there, and this wasn't one. I suggest planning further out if you want better pricing. Hope your next vacation is a better experience, and you both feel better soon.

Your experiences could have happened on a land-based vacation too. Depending on where you live, flights may be necessary for a land vacation. Airfares have been greatly inflated for the last 6 months or so. Especially last-minute fares. Most cruise bloggers do not recommend booking a cruise two weeks before it leaves. You might get lower prices but that is not a guarantee. We always book as far our as we can. Our next cruise in October, 2023 was booked in April, 2022. That cabin today is about 60% higher and is not available now. $800 for a 4-day drink package? That is a lot of booze for that short period of time. Maybe that contributed to your woes? Were you cruising during "Spring Break" time for schools? Cruise ships at that time usually sail at more than 100% of capacity because of kids staying in cabins with parents. Do not give up on cruising. Just plan better next time. With you. I have all our cruises booked through April 2025. Then I watch for price drops and get a lot depending on the ship. I pretty much book as soon as itins come out.

Maybe the ice will be closer than expected; maybe further. But almost never in the same spot as when you took off.
Jenna1983 Posted March 17, 2023 #96 Share Posted March 17, 2023 I used to love cruising but once I started traveling to countries for longer periods of time I became uninterested. Cruising is good if you want a taste but 8-10 hours in a port isn’t really seeing the country. I’m doing an Alaska cruise because it’s easiest with a large family/friend group. I did a Norway/Sweden/Finland land trip this past fall and while a cruise would have gotten me in more fjords then the ones I saw myself…I would have missed out on the incredible culture and sights I normally wouldn’t see on a cruise.

Having started our vacations doing big land vacations, if anyone expects anything close to a land trip on a cruise, you need to shift what you think is going to happen. Heck, in most places, just visiting ONE city for a week isn't anywhere near seeing the country, let alone a cruise. But sometimes an 8 hour exposure to a place is enough. And also, sometimes, a cruise ship as a resort is also enough- regardless of the ports. For the haters, please don't take that as a suggestion to cruise- you need to stay away from cruising. And we really, really need to stop people from booking a 4 night balcony for $1200/pp - as that just hits the rest of us really hard.

I feel your pain. Our last cruise in November was horrible. We both got Covid after arriving home. Hadn’t gotten it since the start of the pandemic and we were careful. Never tested for the flu but felt like death warmed over. Service was nothing like it was before and not worth our hard earned cash.
