kochleffel Posted May 23, 2023 #26 Share Posted May 23, 2023 A friend of mine, a prosperous lawyer, picks up pennies from the sidewalk. When he has a bag full, he takes them to the bank to be counted and then donates the total to charity, Everyone in his family thinks he is crazy. No pork anything for me, even though I have mangoes. The cocktail is perfect for people who don't like Scotch, because the other ingredients will kill the taste of it. I'm not familiar with the wine and I haven't been to HMC, because the seas were too rough for tendering. Instead, the Nieuw Amsterdam diverted toward Grand Turk, where we had already called, for a medical evacuation. Today in History: 1949 Federal Republic of [West] Germany created out of the American, British and French occupation zones Last night I found myself unexpectedly teaching the first hour of a Talmud class because the person who was supposed to teach it had an emergency. It was a tractate that I don't know, but fortunately the questions that arose were about things that I did know. Usually I am only the Zoom host. One of the digressions--the class rarely sticks to the topic--was about the differences in attitudes between the former West Germany and the former East Germany. I happen to have spent a week in East Germany while it was still East Germany, if that makes sense. I'm still not firing on all cylinders. Bronchitis and sinusitis have improved; I've used only complementary treatment because neither was severe enough for antibiotics or for decongestants, which are contraindicated for me anyway. Exhaustion has not improved very much. It may be from the respiratory issues, but lack of sleep is also a factor. 26
Quartzsite Cruiser Posted May 23, 2023 #27 Share Posted May 23, 2023 A very early good morning from a sunny central Texas. It is 66F with a predicted high of 84F. Today will be spent cleaning house, only I hope to be finished by early afternoon if nothing happens to slow me down. If we see a penny, we will pick it up for good luck. DH likes salt water taffy, but we don't get it very often. Does anyone remember Laffy Taffy when we were kids or am I dating myself? I will definitely celebrate world turtle day. We should do everything to protect turtles and tortoises. The quote is interesting, and I understood it to mean we each have to live our own lives. Tina @0106 I appreciate the explanation of the quote. We'll pass on the meal, drink and the wine today. We have been to Half Moon Cay several times in the pre-digital age, but not since 2001 when we began cruising in other areas of the world. We were supposed to stop there in 2017 on Prinsendam with Roy @rafinmd, but it was too windy for the ship to anchor and without azipods she could not stay in place. Thank you Rich @richwmn for reminding us that the German republic was recreated on this day in 1949, @dobiemom Marcia, I'm sorry you could not sleep last night. I hope tonight is better. @superoma Eva, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you for continuing with the lists. @dfish Debbie, sending good and positive thoughts for a successful surgery tomottor. Below are a couple of pictures of tortoises. The first is a desert tortoise we came across in the middle of a back road near our place in Quartzsite. The second are giant tortoises at a hotel in the Seychelles. We found they liked to be scratched and rubbed on their necks under their chins. One even followed me to the gate wanting more attention. I was surprised he could move a fast as he did. Quartzsite Cruiser Posted May 23, 2023 #28 Share Posted May 23, 2023 We have been to Half Moon Cay several times, but the visits were before the cabanas and the bar with the lound music. They were also before digital pictures. We were supposed to have a day there in 2017 at the end of the Prinsendam TA, but it was too windy and rough for her to anchor, so Nieuw Amsterdam had the place to itself. Here are a few pictures of the island taken from the Prinsendam. Lenda 29

Rare Nickelpenny Posted May 23, 2023 #30 Share Posted May 23, 2023 Good Morning to All! Thanks for the info. As I am a "Penny", (and NOT Penelope!!), there will always be 1 around. My mom told me they named me Pennie because they saved their pennies for me! No gym today as it is closed for renovation. This small business is doing great. Off to only a 1/2 day at work - took 4 hours of personal time I had left to use it up. And tomorrow took sick time. So only 2.5 days left of FT work!! Happy dance!! Have a great Tuesday!!

Cruzin Terri Posted May 23, 2023 #32 Share Posted May 23, 2023 Good morning. i hope everyone is doing well today. Thank you to Rich @richwmn for the Daily and Fleet Report and getting us started today. Also thanks to all that contribute to this thread that keep us informed, hydrated, and fed. @dfish thank you for your dedication to making sure we have wonderful recipes each day and have a variety of meals each day,. And to @summer slope and @cat shepard for the wonderful cocktails and wine each day. Also thank you to @grapau27 for sharing great information about the days we celebrate each day. And today thank you to @0106 for putting the quote in context. Also to all those who share their wonderful photos of the destinations—especially @StLouisCruisersand @Quartzsite Cruiser. Thank you for being so organized and willing to share with us. Yesterday i decided that I just was going to get better results with the appliance store in person than on the phone and I was right. After the salesman made a few phone calls to the warehouse or wherever he called, a dryer magically was available and there was a delivery space available for tomorrow (Wednesday). I actually told him I wanted my money back because I could go to Costco or Home Depot and get it cheaper with less angst. He didn’t like that. That put him into action. We have been to Half Moon Cay a number of times and would probably duplicate photos. Hope everyone has a great day. God Bless, Terri 30

We have not been to the port but the pictures look wonderful. Thanks to Tina @0106, for your quote explanation. @dfish I hope all goes well tomorrow. Our hospital states that they will call by 8 pm to let us know when to come....oh my. I hope you get a decent time and I am sending my prayers your way. marshhawk Posted May 23, 2023 #34 Share Posted May 23, 2023 (edited) Good Tuesday Morning Dailyites! We got home last night at 9:15, our time, but was up at 2 am yesterday to get our flight. Will do an over all review when i feel better, but I managed to catch Norovirus , as did most people on the cruise, and then bronchitis, so I am catching up with catching up, and currently wondering why Andri isn't coming by and offering me my coffee with cream. I got very spoiled on Holland, and DH wants to switch over to HAL full time. We missed Kodiak because the weather was so bad, and my stomach forced me to skip Sitka, while i did take pictures while wandering the promenade deck. Some scary moments as we sailed through a typhoon, with a steady wind of 90 kph, (over 100 mph) and the ship listing at 12 degrees. Two of my excursions were cancelled, because one didn't even begin until May 16, and we were there the week before, and the other because Thompson Pass was not passable. RMLincoln Posted May 23, 2023 #38 Share Posted May 23, 2023 My dad would only pick up a penny if it was heads up! I like scotch and I like sweet vermouth but not together. I’ll take the vermouth with rye or bourbon as a Manhattan! Or the scotch on ice please. @0106 the quote makes much more sense knowing it’s from The Fountainhead. Thanks for the expansion, your additions are always welcome and enlightening. @dfish best of luck tomorrow. 🙏 for Amazing! @superoma One day at a time Eva. Or try for 10 minutes if the day is just too much! Give yourself a warm hug! @Vict0riann hoping the antibiotics are helping Pat. @Lady Hudson good luck with DH today! @Denise T happy countdown! @kazu I think of you every time I turn over during the night! I don’t know how you’ve managed all these months. Keep healing! @kochleffel sorry to hear you are ill. DH used to get terrible sinusitis. A steam vaporized with a funnel to fit the face has been a big help, especially with a drop or two of essential oils. Hoping you’ll be through it soon. @Cruzin Terri I’m impressed with the miraculous finding of a dryer! 👏 🥂to all celebrating and cruising. Blessings to all in need of healing, comfort or hope. I need to get my act together prepping for DGD and her DH coming this weekend! Working on my grocery list and told them they could each pick a dessert; the choices are key lime pie, chocolate mousse pie, tiramisu and tres leches cake. DGS loves my tiramisu but I want DGD to get a choice too! We’ll celebrate their June anniversary while they’re here, again! Celebrated it all together in the family cruise on Rotterdam in March! The desserts are all pretty easy enough but I think only two will fit in the fridge! I miss having an extra fridge! Will try to get to the pool today for hip exercises. Not my usual day but the week is getting busy. DHs itching has improved but with the new tonometer we can tell the pressures are not as low as his glaucoma specialist wants them. He’ll see her next week. 2 months to go until surgery. 🤞 Thanks for your support. Maureen 22

ger_77 Posted May 23, 2023 #42 Share Posted May 23, 2023 Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily! Although we don't have pennies here any longer, I still see nickels and dimes on the ground. I was taught the following: "See a penny, pick it up, give it to a friend for luck." So whenever I see a coin on the ground, I pick it up and give it to DH who is usually with me - I figure both of us are lucky then. I tend to stay away from taffy, knowing they could release one of my crowns. Besides the Geiko gecko, turtles are the only reptile I don't find abhorrent. I enjoy seeing videos of the babies heading off to sea. @dobiemom I can't imagine heading off to work with so little sleep - good luck today! @Denise T we always let our insurance company know when we're going to be gone over more than 1 prescription cycle so we can be sure to take enough to cover the time away. @StLouisCruisers we were cruising with friends one year and the 4 couples got together and rented Villa D - what a delight seeing your photo of it! @marshhawk welcome back - I'm sorry to hear you were ill and had such poor weather, but it's good that your DH wants to switch over to HAL permanently! @superoma thinking of you and your family with care. @dfishgood luck with your surgery tomorrow. @Cruzin Terri re: your dryer . . . you go girl!!!! We had a hot day yesterday, but it ended with lightning, thunder, and some rain. The thunder went on for over 3 hours, some of it seeming very close. This morning we're still looking at grey brown skies, so there wasn't enough rain to wash all the smoke and ash out of the clouds, because the cool air coming into the house smells like freshly tanned moose hide. About 2 hours north of us there are heavy rain warnings for the day, which could lead to flooding - what a strange place we live in. I think I'd like to try today's menu suggestion another time, but do have a question for @dfish - you often speak of riced cauliflower; how do you make it? Does it still have the strong cauliflower taste? Now that we've got good weather, DH wants to continue using the barbecue, so I've got some sweet Italian sausages thawing that will be grilled and served along with crudites and a bean salad on the deck tonight. And wine. Prayers for everyone who needs them, cheers to all with celebrations. Smooth Sailing! ☺️☺️☺️ Gerry

I had a synch problem when I changed my Apple ID, and the tech remoted in to my devices ( including Windows desktop machine that was using iCloud) and eventually (45 minutes or so) fixed the problem. Rare Vict0riann Posted May 23, 2023 #50 Share Posted May 23, 2023 Good morning, Dailyites, Welcome Home, @marshhawk, sorry you got sick on your Alaska cruise, it just means you will have to do it again! Thanks to everyone for the news today. Pat is feeling much better with the antibiotics, and in his phone appointment with the doctor this morning, the doctor said he is on the correct antibiotic. But now he has a stiff neck, and he is a very grouchy patient! No more pennies here, but I used to pick them up when we had them. I don't know about the luck, though. It used to be you could buy a jawbreaker with one (remember jawbreakers?). Had a long chat with Apple yesterday about my AirTag. It seems no one can contact it except me, I was hoping that when Jacqui is on Rotterdam she might be able to ask it make a noise so the stewards could locate it in our old room, but no, it has to be me. It is in "Lost" mode now, so I had thought it might be able to "talk" to anyone nearby with an iPhone. Evidently there must be some way for anyone finding it to figure out who it belongs to, though. It has contact information for me. And some days it doesn't seem to have internet to let me know where it is, perhaps it can just get onto internet in a port... It's all very complicated. I hope it is having a good time, travelling the world without me! The chickens of Half Moon Cay 24
