I’ve been guilty if that myself. Cheers! m Well, Americans are free to call any wine made with the champagne method as champagne. The restriction was based on a treaty that the French trotted around. America didn't sign it because we were already doing something even more stupid (prohibition). When we said we were signing because we were drinking (theoretically), the French accepted that. Really, the whole idea is stupid. Pilsner beer doesn't have to come from Pilsen.
smokeybandit Posted June 18, 2023 #27 Share Posted June 18, 2023 What's next, deciding between Cognac or brandy?

Every cognac is a brandy, but not all brandy is a cognac. For me, this is a situation when a knowledgeable sales staff comes in handy. m
Djsmrs Posted June 19, 2023 #29 Share Posted June 19, 2023 This isn't unique to the French and Champagne. Scotch - can only be called scotch if distilled and matured in Scotland... otherwise it's whiskey - The Champagne producers were smart and protected a brand... just like Disney, Sony, Apple, Bourbon (must be made in the US), etc.
