MamaFej Posted July 16, 2023 #703 Share Posted July 16, 2023 I'm hoping this thread doesn't get shut down. I know that someone would start a new one, and a large percentage of what's here would be rehashed. I just think it would be more productive if those not interested skip it, and those who are interested will discuss the issues at hand kindly. If we respond to statements and answer questions, even tangential ones, without deliberately ascribing nefarious motives to our fellow posters, we might all have the chance to be heard. Heard by each other, I mean. Heard by X? That's another story.

PROCRUISE Posted July 16, 2023 #705 Share Posted July 16, 2023 Wow. 700 ideas, opinions etc was a lot to read through!! Up front, I have never smoked or vaped. However I did care for plenty of COPD, pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer patients during my years of nursing, many of not most, who were smokers. I'm just curious what the percentage of smokers would be verses non smokers on any given Celebrity vessel and any itinerary. I'm guessing that if the vast major of cruisers on any cruise were American, the percentage might be 1 smoker to every 300 to 400 non smokers. Having started cruising in 2002, I've seen fewer and fewer smokers each year especially on X, HAL, and Princess. Perhaps a few more on CCL and NCL and actually none, that I saw, on Viking and Windstar. I am sure that Celebrity will go with smoking and vaping because, they need the money that apparently smokers produce in the casino maybe even more so than non smokers. I guess we'll have our answer fairly soon.

I think it is pretty obvious from any recent survey, that non-smokers outnumber smokers by a massive number, but I think what Celebrity is probably banking on is that the percentage of non-smokers who aren't as militant as a lot of the "I'll never sail Celebrity again" voices is way less than the non-smoking "I'll just avoid the Casino" voices.

The I'll just avoid the casino voices may be just to get past the next Celebrity cruise. After booked cruises you have a choice of which cruise line to book on without any prior time or money invested in the upcoming cruise. Only time will tell... The Celebrity business model at this time makes zero sense to me. In prior years they had a religious following. Much like Apple or other successful brands... Ellaleah Posted July 17, 2023 #708 Share Posted July 17, 2023 Celebrity is being greedy. If a casino in Vegas were to be non smoking, gamblers could go next door to another. Where can they go on the ship? They can’t! Celebrity doesn’t want them to take a vape break cause they might toddle off to a show and not return. Just greedy!
Ozzmund Posted July 17, 2023 #709 Share Posted July 17, 2023 For those who will no longer cruise on Celebrity should this “test” become permanent, where will you go for future vacations? Are there other non-smoking/vaping cruise lines?

Are there other non-smoking/vaping cruise lines? Azamara Azamara's ships have a designated smoking area on the portside forward section of the Pool Deck. Smoking is prohibited in all other areas of these ships, including public rooms, restaurants, the Pool Deck, staterooms and suites, verandas and hallways. Additionally, smoking is prohibited on all components of the land tour portion of all Azamara Club Cruises cruise tours. This policy includes the use of products like electronic cigarettes. 1

And how much it changes the atmosphere. A few vaping people in the casino probably would not sway me against cruising with Celebrity but we shall see. I don't use the casino more than a few times every cruise. I did cruise a lot with RCCL in the past with actual cigarette smoking allowed in the casino. I put up with it - not saying I liked it. I grew up in a period where most of the population smoked. But I never did. But if you are absolutely non-tolerant of vaping for whatever good reason, then avoid the casino or cruise another line I guess.

I have no problem avoiding the casino if smoking/vaping is allowed but if the Celebrity smoking/vaping passengers emulate Royal's smoking/vaping passengers, smoking/vaping will not remain in the casino.
Tigerfnan23 Posted July 17, 2023 #713 Share Posted July 17, 2023 We spend maybe 3-4 hours per cruise in the casino. We don't smoke or vape but I doubt a few people vaping would make us not enter the casino and it certainly wouldn't make us cancel a cruise since the casino is only a tiny fraction of the cruise ship. Now if we gambled several hours a day and had health issues then maybe that's different but the casinos were pretty empty our last couple of Celebrity cruises so not sure how many people fall into that category. Perhaps it's those same underutilized casinos that are causing Celebrity to look at things that might generate more revenue there.

Princess: We dropped X in favour of Princess when X had its thankfully shortlived "compolsary AI" and Princess was as significantly cheaper. The main draw back for us was Princess allowing smoking in the casino but if X decides to also allow vaping in the casino Princess will again become a viable alternative.

Our last DCL cruise in June had better dining than The Retreat. We have a September DCL, October, January and three others on Celebrity. We decided to reevaluate everything after our October cruise. I called The Retreat and had them make notes in our reservation file. We are fine doing just DCL.

Although I get very confused by the maths (sorry math) regular gamblers often post that the odds offered by X are very poor compared to land based casinos. So perhaps a better way to entice more gamblers would be to lower the prices and improve the odds. 2

Craps is about what you find elsewhere if you play $25 on the pass line to get better than double odds. Most other games are not as odds friendly. Again, why most want the free cruise as it is indirect cash.

On our last Silhouette cruise we saw three heated exchanges between Guest Relations Staff and players who were on their first comped Celebrity cruise having migrated from Royal. The gist of their complaints seemed to be that on Royal Drinks and Tips were included so they assumed that X would be the same which it wasn't. I was on the Silhouette transatlantic earlier this year on a comped cruise. Most are not comped. NEW players and RATED existing players expect to be comped. If X wants to get new blood on their ships through this route, the first cruise would be comped by the casino, and future cruises based on their X play. I get offers from other cruise lines to try them out, but am not interested in trying other cruise lines, thus decline the offers. My read is X casino is working with third party casino hosts to get players to give X a try and are hearing their players want to smoke. Thus, this vaping test. Ultimately, I do not think it will work because vaping is more in an age group range that X isn't really setup for. Just my opinion...

I sailed on two of the ships on that list and when I sailed they had smoking in the casino. HAL is nearly equivalent in my opinion to Celebrity. I didn't know about the six ships. Definitly on my radar again. Edited July 17, 2023 by Charles4515
