matt082600 Posted August 14, 2023 #1 Share Posted August 14, 2023 I have a friend that is currently on the Venezia. He texted me and told me the gangway in New York is broken and they cannot get off the ship. Apparently, the coast guard has been called. I'm trying to get more information. curlydogusa Posted August 14, 2023 #3 Share Posted August 14, 2023 I can confirm there was very late debarking this morning as we are all sitting and waiting for embarking - they have suspended checkin due to reaching seating capacity limit in the boarding area.

NY taxes drinks (even though it is only pennies) and for some that could add up pretty quickly - lol. LOL!
HappySails4U Posted August 14, 2023 #7 Share Posted August 14, 2023 Seeing a lot of postings about the gangway issue today. This group just trying to make their way to check in. Apparently this is not the first time there have been problems.
davy jones Posted August 15, 2023 #8 Share Posted August 15, 2023 The gangways are operated by the port. That said, it's not good for anyone and many will blame the cruise line for the problem.

Bkro99 Posted August 15, 2023 #10 Share Posted August 15, 2023 I am on the ship now. Basically the gangway was out of commission until around 12:30, so everyone boarded at once. Lines were insane. Took us 2.5 hours. Sail away changed to 6 pm. 1

Rare AFS1970 Posted August 20, 2023 #12 Share Posted August 20, 2023 Probably the Coast Guard needs to be notified because they are the regulatory / enforcement agency for maritime law.

First off, the gangway is owned and operated by the Port Authority, not a ship, so damage to it is not a "marine incident". Secondly, since there were no injuries, and the failure was not caused by an accident like an allision, just a mechanical break down, it does not fall under the definition of a "marine incident" that the USCG would investigate. There is no regulation that says a port has to have a fancy movable boarding ramp to get passengers on and off a ship, so failure of the gangway is simply not an issue for the USCG. I don't believe they were ever informed. 2
matt082600 Posted August 20, 2023 Author #15 Share Posted August 20, 2023 Perhaps not. I was not aboard. I got that information from a debarking passenger who stated they were told the coast guard was called.

Rare AFS1970 Posted August 24, 2023 #17 Share Posted August 24, 2023 Fair enough, they may not have been notified. However, where I work, I routinely notify USCG for land-based issues that may eventually impact coastal waters, I have seen them pull up in SUV's to check out what is going on.
