Last January we did what you're planning to do.  We booked a car for pickup at the airport, I think with car rental company Sixt.  There are taxis waiting a short walk from the port area.  It was a quick ride to the airport.  All very easy and stress free.

We had a great day touring Hobbiton, Rotorua, etc.

Thanks for your reply SeaCbear. We don't have an excursion booked and the ship is sold out for all but water activities for Tauranga. I was hoping to hire a taxi at the end of the pier and have them take us around. We have had luck in the past hiring a taxi for tours but I didn’t know if this was feasible there.

Bevy2homes - did you have luck at Tauranga with hiring a taxi tour??  Want to do the same at Papeete and Tauranga and you are the first other I have read doing the same - so I wanted to know if you had any luck.

SeaCBear, did you buy the excess coverage for your car rental with Sixt.  We have checked National / Enterprise and it seems to be very pricy in the region of $AU500 for the day with Excess coverage. We would like to venture to Roturua and the thermal area.  What were the roads like to Roturua.   We have used Sixt in England and bought the coverage where we could drop the car off a cliff and not be liable for anything.

I don’t think Sixt have a base in Tauranga.

Have a look at a consolidator like https://www.rentalcars.com/en/city/nz/tauranga/?affiliateCode=google&cor=nz&label=tauranga:md6UEych75EP0cEfvXdifVhw:tySM:cr191414644940:pl:ta:p1:p2:ac:ap:neg:fi:tiaud-302866005082:kwd-1823118504:lp9118721:li:dem:dm:ws&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD9RW4vUHt0iC8HnFpqGQUnjzPvtx&gclid=CjwKCAjwnqK1BhBvEiwAi7o0X-adp1dW8rdghnY2KqB-sskADixRtj30NIRz81PbzlXDI_3-ZhY6FRoC0lIQAvD_BwE

for some ideas of companies and prices. Depending on your travel insurance you may find that will cover the excess costs so you won’t have to pay more.

Rotorua is about 60 to 80 minute drive from Tauranga on a good day. NZ roads will not be multi-lane like you are used to.
