On Celebrity Millennium in May with a port stop in Busan, South Korea. Is it possible to do Busan on your own? Is there a shuttle bus at the port and, if there is, where does it take you?

The ship will dock at Busan Port International Passenger Terminal Cruise Terminal. Compliment shuttle will drop off at the main building (2500 feet away). Busan metro is nearby, Busan City Tour Bus (BUTI) Station is near the The Korean Teachers' Credit Union (KTCU) Building.

We took a ship excursion which was interesting to a Buddhist Temple which is nestled on a mountainside surrounded by wisteria woods, Beomosa Temple and then to the Gukje Market and Jagalchi Fish Market.  The fish market was the highlight - we saw a dry market and then a wet market which was largest fish market we have seen.

We just came back from Busan; we opted for a private tour (just the family and a licensed guide with his own car). There are sections of Busan that are doable on your own and attractions that are accessible via the subway network or walkable from the port (BIFF Square/International Market and Jagalchi Seafood Market come to mind), but some of the most popular attractions aren't, such as the Gamcheon Cultural Village and Haedong Yonggungsa (a Buddhist temple nestled on a cliffside facing the sea). My advice is to pinpoint what you want to see first and then research if those places are DIY-possible, or if it'll be less of a hassle to book a guide with transport for the day.

I am posting from the Millennium.  We were at Busan three days ago.  The complimentary shuttle ran continuously from the pier to a Busan Subway Station.  Chinatown was close so apparently a number folks visited Chinatown.

How easy is it to get a local guide or taxi available when you disembark if we have not pre arranged any tours?

Lots of taxi drivers will congregate right outside the port terminal and all of them will be advertising some sort of tour or all-day transportation for a flat rate. Can't guarantee the quality of said tours, since we pre-arranged ours, but make sure to discuss the price before you get into the vehicle.

The distance between Busan cruise port and Haedong Yoggungsa is 9 miles.

Ship will dock at Busan Port International Passenger Terminal Cruise Terminal wharf, port shuttle drop off at the terminal main building. Busan Station is across the terminal building.

Taxi: From cruise terminal taxi stand, 40-45 min taxi ride to  Haedong Yonggungs, by far the quickest way to reach the temple.

Metro: From Busan station take the Orange Line metro towards Choryang Station and then hop off at Busan National University of Education Station. Walk to Donghae line (Blue) and take the metro until you arrive at OSIRIA station. 45 min travel.

From OSIRIA Station: (Donghae Line, Exit 1)
Walk: Alight from the station and expect a 30+ minute walk, following the signs and trails of tourists up the hill to Haedong Yonggungsa.

Bus: Turn left upon exit. Walk towards the main road in front and turn right to the bus stop. 1 min walk. Take Bus# 1001 / 139. 4 mins. Get off at Yonggungsa Temple 용궁사 | National Institute of Fisheries Science 국립수산과학원 stop. Walk 40m in the direction as the bus moving off, turn right onto Yonggung-gil and walk all the way to temple. 12 mins walk.

Taxi: Take the taxi from the taxi stand in front of the exit. 6 mins taxi ride.

Not all Busan taxi drivers speak English, here are the addresses in Korea for them.

Address:

Busan Port International Passenger Terminal

부산항 국제여객터미널

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple 해동 용궁사
부산광역시 기장군 기장읍 용궁길 86 | 86, Yonggung-gil, Gijang-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan

I was there last September. Personal comment: an overrated tourist attraction, no English display and a lot of walking inside the complex (up and down stairs), very slippery when wet and no handrails. You can done in 30 min, but FREE admission 😜. Join a local tour and having a Korean BBQ lunch is wiser choice.
