jfavenuex Posted May 9 #1 Share Posted May 9 I am scheduled to sail on Queen Mary 2 on May 23, 2024. I hear the planetarium has not been working for a while. Does anyone have the current status of the planetarium? Thanks for all who reply.
QM2_SYD Posted May 9 #2 Share Posted May 9 (edited) It was operating from late February to mid March this year, when I was last on board. There are new seats too! Edited May 9 by QM2_SYD 2
Judyrem Posted May 9 #3 Share Posted May 9 I really would love to go there. Do I make reservations or what?
ratflinger Posted May 9 #4 Share Posted May 9 No, first come first serve.
MCC retired Posted May 9 #5 Share Posted May 9 You reserve the Planetarium shows using your onboard Cunard App. Shows are repeated but still book up early in the sailing. You can line up at the door for no shows which are quite common. 5
Rare Pushpit Posted May 9 #6 Share Posted May 9 On longer sailings, the chances of not getting in, without reservation, after the first day or two is very low. It's quite a big space and some of the topics may be less than riveting. The planetarium is also used for some of the Insight lectures, particularly those that have a recorded audio-visual content. These aren't subject to a reservation system.
ex-koelner Posted May 10 #7 Share Posted May 10 I'm on QM2 right now, and there are still no planetarium shows. Rumor has it, that there is an issue with the sound system for the dome, that is installed under the red seats. In order to fix it, they would have to close Illuminations for a few days to remove the seats, and this work has not yet been scheduled.
Tattycoram Posted May 11 #8 Share Posted May 11 Oh, I hope they fix it by July! My daughter and I were really looking forward to going (the fact that it attracted a 16-year-old perhaps indicates how cool it is).

For many years tickets were placed on a desk at 9:00 a.m. - and in the Grills Concierge Lounge - for passengers to take. There was sometimes a queue but we always got tickets even if not for our preferred time.
Rare D&N Posted May 11 #10 Share Posted May 11 Not sure we'd ever have time to sit down and watch something like this, but can anyone give an opinion? How does QM2's planetarium compare to the London Planetarium in the late 1960's?
Rare NE John Posted May 11 #11 Share Posted May 11 I was underwhelmed at the production last summer. They need to upgrade the technology. The subject matter is interesting but the visuals are dated. It’s free and only 45 minutes so worth the visit but one will probably not get blown away. 2

How does QM2's planetarium compare to the London Planetarium in the late 1960's? We were really looking forward to the Planetarium when we were on QM2 last year. We saw both shows that were running and were extremely disappointed with both. I was expecting something akin to the London Planetarium, where almost all the show is the night sky and showing the marvels of space whereas, in reality, it was more like a large screen documentary with much of the subject matter being based on Earth. We didn’t even find it interesting and yet I love Space subjects. 1
awcruiser Posted May 31 #14 Share Posted May 31 Any updates on whether it’s repaired yet?
TowandaUK Posted May 31 #15 Share Posted May 31 We recently visited voyage sales and booked a taster voyage on QM2. I asked about the planetarium. I was told that it was due to have a major refit. He said it was going to be fitted with state of the art LED walls to give a truly immersive experience and that it could also be used for concerts. He gave no time scale. 1

He gave no time scale. Interestingly, I just disembarked the QE about a week ago in Tokyo. While on board, I was talking to a very senior officer and discussed the planetarium on the QM2. As an aside, although the shows are definitely dated, I love the planetarium. The officer indicated that the work would not occur until the next QM2 dry dock; he indicated an approximate date, but I don’t recall it now. More disturbingly, he said it would transform the area into a multi purpose space that would include a special dinner theater area, sort of like Bright Lights on the QA. When, I asked if that meant scaling back or eliminating the planetarium, he became very noncommittal as I think he realized he was disclosing something he probably shouldn’t. I will be sad if there is no planetarium.
Rare NE John Posted May 31 #18 Share Posted May 31 Wait…Cunard just fixed the broken seats during last Fall’s refit and now it’s closed. The planetarium show is dated and any update would be welcomed by me. Illuminations is a nice space for Insight lectures though.
new to cuising Posted June 2 #19 Share Posted June 2 Whilst the shows are dated these would surely have be bought in by Cunard and not produced by them? It would be a major shame if this wonderful room was remodelled
Rare Kordy Posted June 18 #20 Share Posted June 18 Does anyone know if the Planetarium on the QM2 is still closed for the foreseeable future?
ivanidea Posted June 25 #21 Share Posted June 25 Currently on the QM2, and there is no word on when it will be repaired. The ship is showing it's age, with teak decking warping, water pooling, and one of the lifts has been out of action for this and the last cruise (maybe more). Rare Kordy Posted June 25 #22 Share Posted June 25 Oh wow ... that's disappointing. Hopefully, they are working on repairing the lift. That's an easy fix and can be done by on-board engineers(?). The teak decking warping in key places could probably be fixed internally, while in the cruise, perhaps in the early morning when folks are having breakfast(?).
