Civitavecchia Port train to Rome

Hi all! For those that disembarked in Civitavecchia and stayed in Rome, did you pre-book your train ticket? It says we port at 6:00 a.m. but was thinking maybe of doing an 8:30 a.m.ish train time. Wasnt sure if I should pre-book this or just show up along with everyone else disembarking from our cruise. Thanks!

There are two different types of trains, those with assigned seats and those without.

 

The regional trains do not have seat assignments, the price never changes and they cannot sell out.  They make lots of stops en route, there is no place for luggage other than at your feet, and you could wind up standing for all or part of the journey.   They are, however, very inexpensive (less than 5 euro) and offer several different stops in Rome.

 

The seat assigned trains, on the other hand, use dynamic pricing and can sell out.  Most make only one stop in Rome (at Rome Termini) and they cost two or three times as much as the regionals.

 

Only Trenitalia offers service between Civitavecchia and Rome, which makes your decision a little easier.

If this is your first time using trains in Italy, I would strongly consider paying more for a seat assigned train, especially since you'll have luggage with you.  There is a Frecce at 9:16 that gets to Rome Termini at 10:03 (non-stop).

are taxis available at port to get you to train station?

Not usually, but there is a 6 euro shuttle bus direct from the ship to the station.

When we disembarked from our Divina cruise on May 24 there were taxis there in addition to the cruise port shuttles.  Taxis will take you to the train station for the same 6 Euro fare PP as the shuttle buses.  Definitely a more convenient experience.  FYI, the same holds true when arriving at the train stations.  Taxis drivers there will take you to the cruise port for 6 Euro PP.  We did not use that service as we were spending the night in Civitavecchia.

Really?  That's new (the taxis being willing to take you to the train station).  And great news, by the way.

Is it a tough walk from port to Civitavecchia train station?

It depends.  If you are at the northern berths you're not allowed to walk, and it would be too far anyway.

 

From the southern berths it's an easy, flat walk but it can be as long as 1.1 miles, or as far as one and three quarter miles.

So it's 12 euro (2 of us) in total for the trip from ship to train station?

Yes, it would be 12 euro for the two of you.  Be advised that must be paid in cash.  Having exact change is probably not a bad idea.

it is a flat fairly easy walk.  it is about 15 minutes.    There 2 different shuttle bus pick up points, one (the less used one) is closer (but we missed it when we went in May).    You can't walk right up to the ship you have to get a shuttle bus which will drop you.    If you take the shuttle or a cab direct from the train station (6 euro pp each way for shuttle) they drop you at the ship.     Note when we were there in May you could get a cab for the same price as the shuttle bus.
