bled01 Posted June 6 #1 Share Posted June 6 What is the realistic men’s standard for Elegant nights these days? Twenty-five years ago I rented a tux on my honeymoon, and then on cruises after that I always wore a sports jacket. I have heard it is much more relaxed now and I rather not dress up, but I rather not stick out like a sore thumb or get hassled either. If I wore a button down dress shirt and dressy shorts is that going to fly or do I still need to wear pants?😆
thesmiths Posted June 6 #2 Share Posted June 6 It's the only night I don't wear shorts if we are going to the dining room. I'll wear Dockers and a Polo type shirt. 6
Frank12 Posted June 6 #3 Share Posted June 6 It's pretty much anything goes these days. I have seen shorts, but it is not the norm. If you want to not stick out, Dockers or nice jeans with a collared shirt will work. 4
Old Fart Cruisers Posted June 6 #4 Share Posted June 6 Just don't forget to wear a big cowboy hat or baseball cap, and leave it on the whole time you are eating🥺 1
mz-s Posted June 7 #5 Share Posted June 7 You can wear whatever you want. They'll probably only say something if you try to wear beachwear, but even then you'd probably be fine because I see lots of bathing suits in the Lido buffet these days and nothing is done about it. Elaine5715 Posted June 7 #7 Share Posted June 7 Answer depends on your traveling companions...if solo, as desired but if your spouse is hoping for a nice dressy photo, well "Black shades, white gloves Lookin' sharp, lookin' for love" 2
ChuckF Posted June 7 #8 Share Posted June 7 I always wear coat and tie, but that is definitely to meet spousal expectations. 1
JMAE Posted June 7 #9 Share Posted June 7 Mostly I wear a coat and tie. Sometimes I will wear a coat and a collared or Polo shirt. We miss the old days but are finding easy to roll with this change.
Stick93 Posted June 7 #10 Share Posted June 7 It’s carnival. People come anyway they want.
Rare sparks1093 Posted June 7 #11 Share Posted June 7 As long as you aren't wearing anything prohibited you should be fine, which is: Not permitted: jeans, men’s sleeveless shirts, shorts, t-shirts, sportswear, exercise and athletic wear, shorts, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suit attire Shorts are not listed as acceptable for Elegant night, but as long as they are dressy shorts they'll probably be ok.

A few weeks back on Venezia early seating dinner, there were two women in bikinis with mesh coverups. It's pretty much anything goes. 1

I laugh when people on here stress over if their "dressy" (whatever that means) shorts are acceptable...the reality is they'll feel overdressed when they actually get on the cruise if their clothes cover their thighs and clavicles. jsglow Posted June 7 #14 Share Posted June 7 OP, I'd say the median is Dockers/button down. Can you get away with dressy shorts on Elegant night? Perhaps. Is it a 'technical' violation? Yes. So if you choose to go that route understand the potential risk. I wear nice shorts essentially every night except Elegant.
john91498 Posted June 7 #15 Share Posted June 7 There is no standard. I've seen shorts, tank tops and flip flops on "elegant" nights

Mike45LC Posted June 7 #17 Share Posted June 7 Every night for dinner, whether in the Main Dining Room or a specialty restaurant (or even the Lido deck), I wear slacks and a nice polo shirt. I'll wear a sweater if I am cold or if She Who Must Be Obeyed suggests it. I still wear a sports coat when I board the ship. Not for photos, but for the inside pockets -- passports, boarding passes, etc. I usually don't wear it during the cruise, but I do for Celebrity and Princess cruises. I have not packed my tux for a cruise in over a decade -- because the tux requires patent leather shoes and all sorts of accessories. Too much hassle! Even for Celebrity!
mz-s Posted June 7 #18 Share Posted June 7 I basically wear pajamas 24/7 on Carnival and sometimes I feel overdressed.

bled01 Posted July 5 Author #20 Share Posted July 5 I did bring two pairs of pants to wear both elegant nights. While I saw a few people really dressed up (tuxedo/suit & cocktail dresses), I saw just as many people wearing shorts in the main dining room on the elegant nights.🤷🏻♂️
teknoge3k Posted July 6 #21 Share Posted July 6 Definitely dress comfortable, it's your vacation. If you want to dress up and wear a coat and tie, go for it. You won't be alone. If you want to wear shorts, tennis shoes and a shirt, go for it. You won't be alone. You will see everything. Years ago I wore jeans, a polo and tennis shoes on the elegant night but as less and less people dressed up on the elegant nights, I just started wearing my usual cargo shorts, a polo and my sandals. I wear the same thing every night, even on the elegant nights. I am not alone.

I told my daughters we might not be able to eat because the app said no shorts. We showed up and there were a bunch of guys wearing shorts just like me. You’ll be fine. We were flying from California to Nee York with plans on both ends up the cruise. I didn’t want to pack dress clothes I would wear for a couple hours then haul them around for two weeks. Old Fart Cruisers Posted July 6 #23 Share Posted July 6 (edited) Even though Carnival says no shorts, you will always find a few people who either can't read or feel the rules don't apply to them🙂. Edited July 6 by Old Fart Cruisers
