Fred321 Posted July 3 #1 Share Posted July 3 Looking at a week long trip in the Gulf of Mexico on one of their Coastal Cats. Has anyone had any actual experience with this type of boat in more open waters? Wondering about movement and noise from a catamaran. In my small boat experience they sometimes have a more herky jerky motion and waves under the bow can sometime sound like a drum. Have extensive ocean cruising experience but nothing on a boat like this. Thanks
BaumD Posted July 3 #2 Share Posted July 3 (edited) Did the final Gulf trip of the season season last year. Instead of returning to St. Petersburg at the end, we went to Miami. That was in the open ocean. Your description of a jerking motion and a banging sound is right on. That is exactly what happened. In calmer water there is no problem. After they finish building the first four coastal cats, they are changing the design to a normal bow. Edited July 3 by BaumD
DesertCruiser2000 Posted July 3 #3 Share Posted July 3 I had wondered the same thing. I guess the designers didn’t quite think that through. 🥴
Fred321 Posted July 3 Author #4 Share Posted July 3 Thanks. We now live just North of St. Pete so this caught our eye. In our younger days we sailed a 33' monohull out of Swan Creek near Rock Hall Md. Actually lived aboard for a while and sailed through the Bahamas. Anytime we crewed on friend's catamarans though we always noticed the difference in rhythm between the cat and the mono and never in a good way. Guess we'll see just how bored we get between now and January.
