Choices will vary but probably the most helpful way to decide is to look at your international flight options before anything else, comparing overall travel time, number of airport changes along the way and cost too as prices can vary depending on the carrier and the time of year. Taking these factors into account, once you know your best options, you will have a better idea of which ports would be the most practical for you. CruiserBruce Posted July 7 #4 Share Posted July 7 Are you sailing someone other than the major cruise lines? If you are sailing the majors, pretty much Rome and Venice are your only starting ports. Yes, I understand MSC and Costa may have some variable ports in this situation. But generally, you need to get to the small luxury ships and similar to start from any other port than Rome and Venice. And...Rome and Venice are not easy...just a fact of life. Civi (Rome's port) is an hour from the airport, or 1:15 from downtown Rome. Venice is so crazy, in terms of logistics, it almost defies explanation. The best thing is, both cities are definitely worth flying in a few days ina davnce to see, and then handling the logistics of getting to the port. Rare carlmm Posted July 7 #5 Share Posted July 7 Barcelona is easy, 25 minutes or so by taxi airport to port. In Genova it is even less, maybe 10 minutes but there aren't that many flights. If you can get one it is very convenient.
CynBeth6 Posted July 7 #6 Share Posted July 7 Last summer we were on a Royal Caribbean 7 day cruise that started from Barcelona we flew in a few days early and it ended at Civitavecchia. After the cruise we visited Venice and Rome. It was so easy to take the train from Civi to Rome to get our Venice train and then from Venice back to Rome. Rare Hlitner Posted July 7 #9 Share Posted July 7 These days, the best Italian port for embarkation is Civitavecchia (Rome) although it is some distance from the airport (FCO) and Rome. Since Venice is no longer used as a cruise port (with the exception of a few very small ships) that port has become more of a hassle. And getting flights to/from FCO offers many more options.
