CraftyDD Posted August 27 #1 Share Posted August 27 I have been getting quotes on trip insurance. Have looked at several companies to ensure a single cruise or purchase an annual policy. Cost is relative to what the cruise lines charge. Will it just be easier to purchase through them?

Here is a link to the CC section on Travel Insurance: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/499-cruisetravel-insurance/ Also, don't just compare prices! Double check what IS covered, and, importantly, what is NOT covered. There can be very big differences in the coverages, in ways that may make the difference between being paid for a claim or not. We *always* purchase travel insurance from a third party. In our case, it's from www.TripInsuranceStore.com, but there are other brokers, agents, and insurers, etc. (We've had many claims, including some large ones, and all have been paid without quarrel.) NotADopey1 Posted August 27 #3 Share Posted August 27 We also use trip insurance store. They search several insurance companies and compare them for you.
clo Posted August 27 #4 Share Posted August 27 We've been insureds with USAA for over 50 years due to my husband's service in the military. So when we decided to buy trip insurance I went through them. It's not their company but I figure they would only be associated with someone reputable.

I forgot to mention, but to make the best use of their comparisons for *your* purposes, CALL them. Don't rely upon the online search, which just can't be specific enough, given all of the many choices and different personal situations. And the personal situations might even be different from one trip to another... They are incredibly patient with questions like "What about if... or what about if...?" And they can help with claims if desired. Note: We have NO relationship with them other than that we learned about them here on CC just over 10 years ago, and we've had excellent service, including with *claims* (not just purchasing policies that may not be used for a claim, which is the hope, of course). As already suggested, I would look at coverage to meet my needs. After that, look at cost. As far as what is easier, insurance coverage parts are anything but easy reading.
shipgeeks Posted August 27 #7 Share Posted August 27 Check the travel benefits of the credit card you use for the cruise. Some of them, even non-premium cards, cover everything insurance would, as long as you pay for the cruise with that card.
donaldsc Posted August 27 #8 Share Posted August 27 It is obviously easier to buy insurance from the cruise line or from your TA. The more difficult issue is to compare benefits. You will almost always find the coverage from cruise ship insurance is very bad. DON
jclinard Posted August 28 #9 Share Posted August 28 Only take recommendations from people who have attempted to collect. Taking advice from people who only know how fast they deposit the premiums isn't a good strategy.
