No more singer/dancers

Was on the backstage tour.

During a conversation about singer/dancers, one of the singers mentioned that the position is being eliminated.

Singers will be doing their songs.

She didn't elaborate why.

I'm guessing it's to cut costs?

The production cast usually consists of 4 singers, 2 singer/dancers and 8 dancers.

The 2 singer/dancer positions are being cut fleetwide.

The songs they usually sing will now be done by the 4 singers.

So the cast number will be 12 rather than 14.

Definitely could be cost cutting or I wonder if this will be as they change the main shows and the ‘new’ shows will only need a cast of 12? Certainly some shows have been operating for a while…

That’s very different from your table of “no more singers and dancers “

The singer/dancers are typically the weakest singers and the weakest dancers.  So IMHO this will improve the quality of productions

Not always.  I've seen one who was an incredibly strong singer and the dance captain as well.

I wonder if for the ships that have shows that actually need 6 singers like Topper etc, if they will be totally scrapped and new productions will be brought in.

Likely due to challenges in hiring, and I don't care, but it's another controversy I suppose.

As you suggest, it may likely be based on hiring changes.  But that may simply be related to a different production show plan and lineup that doesn't require the same staffing as previously.  The comment of certain positions being laid off may be accurate and ultimately roll out fleet wide relative to that production show, and may have cost savings benefits associated with it. And to the individual involved as related to the OP during their tour it would certainly be significant.

But it may not be so controversial as the OPO's rather negative and likely inaccurate thread title indicates.  JMO.

So there will still be singers and dancers but no singer/dancers?

I understood.

I don't know yet whether this is good or bad, because I feel like they can build their shows around the team they have.  I also feel like that position is usually what others mentioned - neither a top singer nor a top dancer - but one hopes the folks who shine as either a singer or a dancer will find a place once the singer/dancer role is gone.  I would think the singer/dancer role would be a pretty important understudy position for any injury or illness that befalls the other folks during a cruise contract, so while the title may be gone, those folks may just be reclassified into one or the other (most likely to "dancer") to keep that flexibility open.

Another thing I have noticed is that the talent differs across ships (and time), so a strong singer/dancer on one ship may easily be better than a singer or dancer on another ship, and X probably wouldn't want to cut those folks if avoidable. Better to shift folks around to where they are best suited considering there is always a lot of churn as contracts ends, and it would make sense to hold on to all the best folks you can.
