rickb Posted August 28, 2009 #428 Share Posted August 28, 2009 There is a great Irish pub not far from the pier "The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse" http://www.oldtriangle.com/Also there is O'Carroll's (this is an upscale pub) http://www.ocarrolls.com/ and Durty Nelly's http://www.durtynellys.ca/ These are all within an easy walk of the pier. There are also many other pubs in the area. Have fun! :D There's also "Pogue Fado" another Irish Pub. http://www.poguefado.com/ There aren't really any pubs near the Pier because it's at one end of the city but if you follow the crowd for about 5-10 minutes along the waterfront there are lot's if you just wander around. YOu won't have trouble finding any as Halifax is a university city and has the highest # of bars per capita in Canada.:p
Cardex Posted August 29, 2009 #429 Share Posted August 29, 2009 We are going to do our own pub crawl in Sept. Can you suggest some pubs near the pier that we should try. We are in our 30's, not looking to party just nice pubs. The wife is always partial to Irish Pubs. Thanks I forgot to add if you don't feel like walking too far or maybe as a last stop on your way back to the ship there is Garrison Brewing in the parking lot at the cruise pier! http://www.garrisonbrewing.com/ They have a wonderful sampler if you can't decide which beer to have :D
Maraprince Posted September 5, 2009 #430 Share Posted September 5, 2009 It's basically a free city transit bus that does a 40 loop of the general city core. There are numerous stops including one near the Maritime Museum (which is only 10 minute walk from the ship). It doesn't go near the cemetary as it is a few miles away. Knowing that FRED does not go to the Natural History Museum directly, what would be the closest stop to it? MARAPRINCE

MARAPRINCE The stop on Sackville street would be the closest and then just walk along Bell Rd until you get to the museum, The main entrance of the museum is on Summer St. Here's a map of the route with the museum marked. http://www.downtownhalifax.ns.ca/images/pdf/aa_downtownmap.pdf

We are in our 30's, not looking to party just nice pubs. The wife is always partial to Irish Pubs. Thanks Peddler's Pub 1880 Granville St Split Crow http://www.splitcrow.com 1855 Granville Granite Brewery http://www.granitebrewery.ca/ (for some local MicroBrews) Maxwell's Plum http://www.themaxwellsplum.com Lower Deck http://www.lowerdeck.ca There are also a few bars/restaurants on the Harbour that are worth stopping in at. Downtown Halifax is relatively small, all the above are within a 15-20 minute walk of Pier 21 (where your ship should be docked).
tootsie7 Posted September 6, 2009 #437 Share Posted September 6, 2009 We like the idea of using "Fred" to get around town but would like to go out to Peggys Cove. What is the best way and hopefully not too expensive to do that?
maryann ns Posted September 6, 2009 #438 Share Posted September 6, 2009 Don't forget the Old Triangle Irish Alehouse which often has live Celtic entertainment. http://www.oldtriangle.com/halifax/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=
torpeedo Posted September 13, 2009 #439 Share Posted September 13, 2009 We will be in Halifax on Oct 20 and would like to know the best Lobster restaurant for lunch on the boarwalk. We googled and found Salty's but not sure if that is good our too touristy, however, we ARE tourists!:D
maryann ns Posted September 14, 2009 #440 Share Posted September 14, 2009 The thing with lobster is you want it cooked simply (boiled in salt water for 20 minutes) and served whole with melted butter and garlic if you like. I am sure Saltys does this just fine. Another possibility would be Murphys on the Water. Murphys seem to have a huge chunk of the tourist business. I have not had the lobster at Murphys, as I prefer to get it near home caught that day and cooked in seawater. I am lucky enough to be able to do that. However I have been there for mussels and it is fine. Both places have their menus online, but lobster prices vary according to current market prices. jeannep Posted September 14, 2009 #441 Share Posted September 14, 2009 Maryann, Do you know anything about the place in Sydney with the big fiddle in front? Do they have shows that are open to people other than those who are on ship excursions? Is the place located very close to the ship terminal? Any info would be great. Thanks Jeanne
torpeedo Posted September 14, 2009 #442 Share Posted September 14, 2009 Thank you MaryAnn. We have been to Murphy's twice and their lobster rolls are not all lobster so we were dissappointed after having them in Bar Harbor. I think we will try Salty's this time and go for the Lobster. jdavid Posted September 15, 2009 #443 Share Posted September 15, 2009 I wouldn't want my comments to be taken as negative against any local establishment but i'll add my two cents... A) Salty's is high end but has good seafood but the ship also has great food and the experience at Salty's couldn't be described as superior to the ship for what you pay. B) Murphy's has good product and service - they own the waterfront in terms of tours etc. Visitors enjoy the atmosphere in their restaurant. C) If you are looking for a place close to the Hotel, the Westin Hotel has a great dining room (Elements) and also I wouldn't hesitate to recoomend the Delta Barrington's (Stone Hearth) or the Marriott's 44 North for seafood. Folks tend to forget Hotels. The Marriott has a great dining room with a view. BUT: why not consider taking a 20 minute taxi ride (4 people - about $20-$25) one way to a place called Eastern Passage and Fisherman's Cove and go where lobsters are landed. I'd recommend Wharf Wraps for fresh seafood - from lobster to clams, scallops and especially the deep fried haddock. After lunch, explore a few shops and walk off the calories on the boardwalk. You'll have a tour and lunch for the price of a dinner downtown. Enjoy Halifax and Dartmouth and get a taste of the shore.....
torpeedo Posted September 19, 2009 #444 Share Posted September 19, 2009 Thanks for the LOBSTER scoop! We are going to Peggy's cove in the AM so we won't have a huge amount of time to wander away so I think we will try Salty's for Lobster since we have had Murphy's before! Stacy_C Posted September 28, 2009 #445 Share Posted September 28, 2009 What is the best way to get to the Fairview Cemetery? If it is via taxi, what is the approximate taxi fare? Thanks!

It's about 8 kms and my guess is $10-15 cab each way depending on downtown traffic. http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=1055+Marginal+Road,+Halifax,+NS+B3H+4P7&daddr=fairview+cemetry&geocode=%3BFTh5qQId2jY1_CF5BLfJjfvwig&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=44.585577,-63.6026&sspn=0.001715,0.003406&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=
