not sure I like the new bedding......

Recommended Posts

We were on the pre-inaugural of Freedom and also Crown Princess---

what's with the new bedding???? The mattresses are great--it's just those

darn 'duvet's......

You were too warm with the duvet on and too cold with it off. I wonder if

they will give you a plain sheet if you want it. We couldn't get the air conditioning cool enough in the room to use the duvet, and we went out of

NYC....imagine what it will be like in the caribbean.

Any thoughts???

"This bed is too warm. This bed is too cold."

Well Goldilocks, maybe check with the 3 bears. I hear they finally figure out how to make porridge just right. :D

Maybe people will forgo packing liquor and start packing bedclothes. ;)

I see how it could be a problem if you like to sleep a little on the cool side. DH keeps our cabin at meat locker temperature, so I use an extra blanket. He would cover with just a sheet.

I would imagine you could ask the cabin steward to forgo the comforter entirely, and just have a sheet or the duvet cover alone if you can't get the room cool enough to sleep with the whole thing. We have this same problem at home. I had to put away our new down comforter when we moved into our new home last Fall. The house is well insulated and it was too warm all winter long to use it.

I just got an email from a friend yesterday who was on the Jewel for a b2b. She said the new bedding is fabulous! They may not have it throughout the ship (don't remember the schedule); she was in the OS.

According to the schedule posted the Jewel wasn't supposed to be updated until 2007?

If you friend is correct, that's great news :D Maybe they are updating the bedding and not putting in the new beds?

Phoenix: she told me they had outfitted all the OS and GS on the Jewel with the new beds and bedding, but the rest of the ship hadn't been done yet.

Makes sense to me. They should do all the OS and GS fleetwide first. If you're paying the big bucks, you should get the good stuff to go with it.

I'm just happy my little cabin on the Monarch this October is supposed to have the new stuff...:D

Neither my DH nor I like duvets at all--yes, they are always heavy and too hot unless you have temps way, way down. Then when you want to get up, its too cold in the room for comfort for a couple of hours. We were NOT happy to learn of the change to duvets. Got well acquainted with them on a European land tour a couple of years ago. What most people in our group did was pull the covers off the duvets and use the duvet cover only.

a duvet is a comforter covered on top and bottom with a sheet.

Rather heavy.

A duvet is actually a 'slip' that a comforter, usually down, slips into.

We asked for a top sheet and also used the duvet. Just threw it off when we got too hot and used the sheet.

Our steward was a little confused when we asked for the sheet. The first night he took the duvet away, so we froze the first half. We asked him to return it the second night.

My husband was too hot with the comforter/duvet on Freedom of the Seas even though we had the air conditioner up as high as it would go. He woke up several nights completely soaked. We weren't really sure, however, if the cause was the comforter/duvet or the mattress reflecting heat.

I say it was the mattress because I never used the com./duvet. I covered up with my own fleece blanket I bring. But I was too warm, also and often slept uncovered, very unusual for me.

One thing is sure. That mattress was very comfortable from a relaxing and cozy aspect even if it did make me feel too warm.

Or maybe the air conditioning didn't get cool enough in our room. Something was working against us in the temperature at night. All that said, I think the new bedding and accessories look terrific. They look cleaner. Just my opinion.

And if you were in the sun a lot during the day, that will make you radiate heat as well. My partner got sooo sunburned one day that I had to make him sleep in the other bed cause he was radiating so much heat he was making me hot. That pesky sun can be brutal.

After midnight, it's like they cut the AC in half on the ship. Many of us noticed it. It started getting very warm in the casino around 1:30-2:00am. I'd get back to the room and it was warm in there also, even though the AC was all the way up and the balcony door was closed.

Maybe they figure since most people are asleep, they won't notice? :)

I would have to kill someone if they did that! (just kidding, or course) I have to sleep with it cold. I would do very well in Alaska!

Actually, a duvet is the quilt or comforter itself. It is usually filled with down or feathers. The duvet cover is the 'slip' that the duvet slips into. A good quality duvet is filled with high quality down with a high fill count and it is extremely light and lofty. The higher end duvets will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. However it is important that the duvet cover be 100% cotton as any cover or sheets made with synthetic fibers like polyester are non-absorbent and will make you uncomfortable with the additional warmth. If the duvets on the ship are heavy than they are most likely filled with feathers or a very low quality down. Most likely the sheets that they use are also a 50-50 blend of polyester and cotton so that will result in added warmth also.

I have a high end down duvet that I paid over $300 for and I use it year round. Our summers here are very hot but I am still able to use my down duvet without overheating! :D

A duvet cover is what covers the duvet. You are correct. I was thinking of a duvet cover, which is normally stuffed with a down comforter, aka, a Duvet.

Oh, I am so glad that I am not the only one that had a problem with the duvets. The first night on the Freedom, when I pulled the heavy duvet up, I thought "My gosh, they're sending us to Alaska, not the Caribbean."

I found that I, too, had to fold it back during the night. And Tracy, I also wondered whether they set the air to a higher temp in the wee hours of the night because even though we kept our cabin set at a very cool temp, I felt it got warmer during the night.

Hmmm, whether a duvet is a comforter cover or the comforter itself, I can't be sure. But one year when I went looking for a cover for my daughter's comforter, I was shown an assortment of duvets, i.e., in simplest terms: a pillowcase for a comforter. Maybe the word is interchangeable.

Yeah, I like it cold too! Would much rather be cold than hot.

Frankly, I didn't find the duvets heavy, but I sleep with one at home. It was the A/C, IMO.

Let's see, Tracy.........you're too young for hot flashes.............;) :D

I dunno, Carol. I AM at an age that when I start feeling hot, I look around and ask "is it just me.....?" LOL

And yes, even the men in the casino attested to the warmth in the wee hours. :)

I don't think it is just the cruise ship that seems to get warmer at night. dh and I were talking about this the othe day. We always lower our thermostat at night and it always seems much warmer than during the day. I think our body heat must rise when we sleep?

I actually prefer a duvet with a cover than sheets and blankets or a comforter with sheets.

Sheets and blankets don't mould to your body, they pull across you at night and most of the bottom sheets in hotels i stay in are too small for the beds and come off the corners in the night

Comforters with sheets - I do not understand why they are used in the US so much, why have duvets with covers not taken off over here? it is exactly the same except the cover is fixed on. So much easier for making the beds, the kids can even make their beds with a duvet with a cover on! And no sheets to iron either.

We have used our feather duvet with it's washable cover from the Uk here in Maryland for the last 2 years, we have the a/c set at 70 degrees and find it fine even in the summer.

I hope I don't find Navigator too warm at night, I too need to sleep in a cool room with my duvet!
