The visitor map has been updated. This info. came to me from the St. Georges Society newsletter. Should any of you go by the Heritage Center, I would appreciate hearing about their progress. St. George's has a facinating history, would like to learn more.
Gingee Posted June 28, 2006 #4 Share Posted June 28, 2006 Why have shops been closed?
smeyer418 Posted June 28, 2006 #5 Share Posted June 28, 2006 Retailing is a tough business. Sometimes the land the building is on is worth more as something else other than retail. People grow old. Walmart comes to town. tastes change. Look in the US look who has gone out of business in the last 20 years too many to name.. Lord and Taylor may be next in the USA. Some of the one who have gone. Wanamakers Gimbels Altman's Caldor Goldwater Korvettes Stern's Bonwit Teller W. T. Grants Woolworths Sidey's Woodword and Lathrup almost anything but Macy's in the Northeast. cruisedjguy Posted June 28, 2006 #6 Share Posted June 28, 2006 We'll be there on our first cruise (NCL Majesty) late July, good to know there will be a place close by where we are docked to get as much info as possible. Not only is this our first time in Bermuda but our first cruise as well! Massi
Pleiades Posted June 29, 2006 #7 Share Posted June 29, 2006 Walmart comes to town. Hah! That’s why we don’t allow Wal-Mart here in Bermuda, or any other franchise/chain company. Except KFC that is, they got in before the moratorium was in place.
suz1607 Posted June 29, 2006 Author #8 Share Posted June 29, 2006 I am not sure of the exact address but it is right on the waterfront in St Georges, as I remember. I saw it in it's early stages. You can find good maps of St Georges, Hamilton and Dockyards @ http://www.bermuda.com/stgeorges_map.php Also there is good history and back ground info. @ http://www.bermuda-online.org/seetown.htm
suz1607 Posted June 29, 2006 Author #9 Share Posted June 29, 2006 In the above post the first email address has the straight line [not sure what it is called] between "stgeorges and map " covered. It should read "stgeorges_map"
BratDet Posted July 2, 2006 #10 Share Posted July 2, 2006 Lord & Taylor has just been sold and will remain in business... In St. George, the only closed storefront was Triminghams.... But we didn't go there just to shop, although we did buy things... :) bernadette
