Princess DVD - very few jeans; fewer tuxes

I've been studying the Princess DVD that arrived yesterday. Now this is not a documentary - the people in it are actors/models - so it doesn't show what actually happens on the cruises, it shows what Princess wants us to think actually happens. Still it is very informative.

First, during the section on Dining, I didn't see one person in the formal dining rooms wearing a tux or jeans. Men were either wearing dockers and golf shirts or slacks and a long-sleeved cotton, buttoned shirt; sports jackets with a buttoned shirt; shirt and tie; sport jacket with shirt and tie; sport jacket with nice tee shirt; or a dark suit. I didn't see any ball gowns, but is is hard to tell when someone is sitting down. I did see one passenger in a tux in the Entertainment section of the DVD - it looked like it was at the Captains cocktail reception.

At the buffet I mainly saw khaki shorts and pants, capris, and one knee-length swim suit cover-up. The only times I saw any jeans were in footage of passengers on horse back riding excursions or in Alaska or Scandinavia. Jeans don't really make a whole lot of sense in the hot places like the Caribbean, Hawaii, Panama Canal, Tahiti, Greek Islands and Mediterranean. I suppose, in such climates, one could wear shorts or dockers during the day and change into jeans for dinner, but the DVD doesn't really show this happening.

Perhaps the DVD doesn't show people in jeans in the dining room because it is not allowed! Per Princess: "In the dining room, items such as cutoff T-shirts, shorts, halter tops, and jeans are not permitted; shoes must be worn at all times"

I think you're trying to glean too much from the DVD, Dena. It's a glorifed commercial. For instance, I noticed there were no shots of people smoking. Is Princess trying to tell us something on that issue?

--- Probably not.

The latest patters read like this:

DRESS CODE:

Shorts and T-shirts are NOT permitted in the Dining Rooms. No Short Sleeves allowed on Formal Night.

I wore jeans and no one blinked an eye at me.

I ordered the DVD to watch with friends who are thinking about taking their first cruise. I liked it in general, but by the end I was getting a little tired of MUTS plugs.

Interestingly, I think it showed guests behaving how they would if Princess could order them up personally---definitely models :D . There were no smokers, no jeans-everyone was impeccably dressed, everyone was having a great time with each other in multigenerational groups, lots of cocktails but no drunks, lots of eating but no fat people, no chair hogs at the pool, lots of seats for the show, everyone at the casino won, wine stewards at your table, etc.

It was kinda fun to watch, anyone remember Fantasy Island?

Its taking longer than I thought for someone to take the "bait".

And while we are at it is it okay to go topless by the pool ? Its been so long since that thread has been active. It tends to never leave page one.

After all Celebrity has a "topless" deck.

Someone probably did, you just didn't notice.

Here's part of an email from a friend (Princess employee) currently on the Sapphire:

"Tonight is formal and it will be interesting to see if they dress up. Hardly anyone does and it gets embarrassing with people in ripped blue jeans, sweat pants, wrinkled t shirts and flip flops wandering around...my heavens, can't they have a bath or shower and put on a skirt and top? and trust me, these aren't just teenagers doing it...40+ and looking shabby...it's a shame. That's my biggest challenge...to walk by then and not say anything. sigh... "

People do notice, even officers and crew.:)

Thanks for sharing that – something I’ve heard from staff members as well. :(

I've only watched the first section of the DVD - but I'm in love already. If I didn't already know how great cruising is, I sure would after watching the video. Sure, it's a commercial, but it's pretty darn nice. It sure whets (or is that wets?) the appetite for another cruise.
