Sunny AZ Girl Posted August 11, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 11, 2006 I know Ensenada isn't exactly the Mexican Riviera, but I will post this question anyway. Is whale watching available from Ensenada in December? We will be on the Monarch & will be in Ensenada on December Dec. 9. I was hoping we could do some whale watching, but don't see it listed on the excursions page. If not, any other suggestions for the day? (It will be my birthday, so I would like it to be a special day!):)
Splinter Posted August 12, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 12, 2006 Late December should have decent whale watching. The Todos Santos Islands off of Ensenada are beautiful and wild, and while you won't go ashore, you will see dolphins, sea lions, sea birds and some lovely coves here, and if the surf is up, you can also see some monster waves (and crazy surfers). Try booking privately. You don't have to stick with just ship's tours: http://www.ensenada.com/sergios/whales.html http://www.sergios-sportfishing.com/whale.htm http://www.biteson.com/lily/whale.htm If you don't do this, then a winery tour is a good option. http://www.mexonline.com/cityguide-ensenada.htm
Sunny AZ Girl Posted August 12, 2006 Author #3 Share Posted August 12, 2006 Thanks for the tips & links. Looks like we may miss the whale watching as we are going too early. We are also looking at a winery tour, so that may be what we will do.
mcfaddensfarm Posted December 30, 2006 #4 Share Posted December 30, 2006 Anyone out there who has actually done a whale watching tour in Ensenada? We're going to be there right at the end of January and some of us are thinking of doing it. Just curious to hear from others who have actually done it and what their experiences were... jaycee200 Posted January 29, 2007 #7 Share Posted January 29, 2007 Hi there! I went whale watching back in January 2004 (probably middle to late January), so its been a number of years (we booked it via the ship excursion, so not sure which company it was!). I have to be honest, we didnt see ANY whales on our outing, which WAS disappointing. But, on the other hand, we did see a group of dolphins that were swimming around, and an eagle and some other animals up on the land, and had a GREAT time just being out on the boat (I'm from Arizona, I'm always VERY excited to be out on a boat! :) ) and we really did have a great time! Another thing, for our trip, I did have to wear a coat or sweater, as the air was very crisp and with the boat moving made it much colder, so just a heads up to bring something to cover up with! As for kids, I think there were some as young as maybe 8-9 years old and we all had life jackets, etc available. I would think this should be open to 5 and older, but I havent checked an excursion book lately :) So, there you have it. For me, no whales to be seen, but we did see a lot of OTHER cool stuff. If open to just a fun boat ride and seeing different animals, etc and not just whales specifically, I'd definitely recommend this excursion :) (and don't forget that sweater! :) ) -Jill
