Legend of the Seas tips

Recommended Posts

Hello gabrielle....So glad you are enjoying the info on Legend..what a choice you have indeed..Europe...or Hawaii/Tahiti... Couldn't be more different. I hope whichever you choose... it is just fantastic. I am so glad you liked the UK. Oxford is lovely...I have sadly not been there personally..but intend to one day. WE Passed by on our way to Southampton to board Legend. Coming from the midlands.. just outside Derby..near nottingham. We are not far actually from Oxford.... probably 90 minutes. I am originally from near Ft. Lauderdale in florida...moving to the Uk in 1981..when I married. Keep in touch if you can..wishing you all the best, Carol:)

Carol, See you say that you are from between Derby/Nottingham, we lived around the Nottingham area before we moved out into the "sticks", lived in Chilwell, Nuthall and most recently Giltbrook.

John.

Glad you had a good time Carol, seems like you all enjoyed yourselves! Thats all that counts, we were on teh same itinery as well, and the 2am sailing from Palma confused many as well, they seemed to think they were getting an additional 24 hours there!

Yes all the cruises are pretty much over for this year, but we wont be sailing next yaer, as one of our children has now stepped up to adult rate and our youngest will be paid for as a full child so it makes it quite expensive for the next few years, so will have to make do with a week in Spain or something, but in a few years time maybe, we will cruise again, cant wait.........

As for Ship Happens, someone sent me a mail saying you had been 'banned' for what reason I have no idea, many people have been asking after you, all seems a bit strange to me!

Anyway, all the family this end is doing well, and trust all yours are as well, take care and speak soon.

James

Hi James...Good to hear from you...and that all the family are well. yes we certainly enjoyed the cruise. The ship..staff and crew were just fantastic...we loved the new beds. The recognition by staff..of us returning onboard Legend..was also great. A lot of extra attention. I can understand the cost being an issue for your family...you were really liucky to get all 3 kids on free last year.... amazing value! I know in flying..we always had to pay full price for the kids from age 10 or younger.. when we visited my family in the states. that was the biggest reason we seldom got to visit..and the package flights didn't meet our needs.we obviously paid for 6 full fares this time..our daughters and their boyfriends.. no question..ALL adults. A very big shock money wise..but a once in a lifetime family cruise..we decided to take. Very glad we did..but I would like to have seen the kids more boisterous..and verbally responsive.. They are all 4 very subdued...even though they are aged 21...22..and 23...but you would expect a cruise they wouldn't be. I suppose I should be grateful..as a lot of 14 and 15 year olds were well over the top at nearly 2 in the morning. Ours were well liked by all the staff...and well respected. which says an awful lot. It was just a bit sad that we outpartied them..at age 56 and 62. Not drinking as such..or going wild..just enjoying every second onboard...and making the most of what was on offer.

The issue with Palma...all the brochures we had... suggested an overnight stop..and printed it as such. I kept an open mind. As I didn't think the ship would hang on until 2 am.the following day...but I neglected to confirm one way or another. The pursers and excursions desk explained the error to many passengers..who were not happy..Saying it was a misprint. However, RC never put a disclaimer in clarifying. Which it should have.He said the tickets actually were corrected. but checking ours..it was still not clear. In any case..the time at sea was very nice. We had 3 excursions this cruise...and enjoyed them all. Our next cruise..in 2007.. is classed in the same way. Venice is clear it is 2 full days..however.. Livorno is typed in the same manner..an early hrs sailing I believe. the itinerary is not really published here in the Uk..only on the RC website. the TA has said it is 2 overnight stops..as has a write up in a travel brochure about the fantastic itinerary giving you time for both Venice..Pisa and Florence..and Captain Nik has said that onboard Legend as he promoted the cruise. 2 days in each port....but I think I will double check with RC first chance..just to be sure.

Regarding Ship happens...it could well be me that mentioned a Ban. As you may recall..I received some not so nice messages on the board. from a gentleman..and his friend... not happy with so many people contacting me and the frequent coversations amongst us all regarding Legend. 25 were sailing on her at that time. We were all very happy and enjoying ourselves. . In the end he was overridden by the moderator time and time again..his complaints erased..and many came to my defense. However, our Email address is given on screen and he took to sending nasty messages to me personally..which I was not happy with. I eventually sent aN Email to the moderator of the board...and at that very same time.. the ship happens' site was no longer accessible. I thought it was due to the dispute..but couldn't understand how they knew who was contacting them to differentiate. in any case.. after a couple weeks..I received emails from several people... asking if I was having trouble with the site... as they were as well. A message relating to problems with the site appeared on screen when you accessed it. Since then..some can now read the boards..but not post. Others.. full service has resumed..and others still..like myself..have no access to view at all.. I have also received an attachment Email from someone saying that they are from ship happens.. HOTMAIL HAS PERMANENTLY BLOCKED IT AS UNSAFE!! so that is not clear to me...what it all means. In any case..I am glad so many people have inquired about me..that is truly very nice to hear. The response was always friendly..the same as on cruise critic..I made many, many friends...including 2 families who met up with me onboard Legend. Both got to know me through my reviews of Legend of the seas..on the Ship happens message boards..Lovely people. we had a great time. All the Best to you James..keep in touch. Regards, Carol

Hi Everyone,

We will be traveling legend of the sea on nov 4th for a 7night western caribbean cruise. So looking forward to it.

I have a couple questions that maybe vetern cruiser can help me with

we are on deck 8 room j 8519 -- Is the pool noise from up above noisey in the morning when they are setting up the pool area? Do you think we should move to deck seven.

Are the dessert good that is one thing I look forward to on a cruise. I have never cruised with rcl.

Beds- Are they new? I have a bad back should I bring my topper for the bed (memory foam)>

Thanks everyone for your help

The Stillman Family

Hi there Stillman Family....Greetings from the godfrey family. As you will see by my posts..we..all 6 of us... have just returned from a 14 day cruise on Legend. The second for my husband and I. she is a lovely ship and you are going to have a great time onboard.

I can definitely say..the new beds were only added in June..Legend was the first to have them after Freedom was launched. They are wonderful.. a massive improvement. I also have back problems. arthritis very badly in my spine and neck. The new bedframes... mattresses....pillow toppers....plus extra pillows... made a world of difference. Last year the beds were like boards...They are very comfortable this year.

There are a good choice of desserts in the windjammer Cafe..at lunch time and afternooon teas...a variety of cakes..cookies.pies..diet desserts..mousse..scones and clotted cream.etc. I am not a sweet eating person..but I certainly did enjoy them. Tea took place from around 3pm to 5.pm (I am assuming the same procedure is followed in the US as in the UK) Then of course the dining room offer another set of desserts with dinners....and with the buffets we had at midnight. We also had a chocolate buffet..nothing but sweet things.

Regarding the cabin on deck 8..we have only been in a deck 3 cabin to date..moving to deck 7 next year. I would not expect a lot of noise from above. we were right under the casino ..and never heard a sound. Deck 8 is home to the captain after all..LOL...and also all the specialty suites.. which are the most expensive and should have priority location. The only person I ever heard complain of noise..was a couple last year regarding teenage kids they heard running on deck 10..late at night. I do not know what cabin they had.... but I am sure that you and your family will have a wonderful time. Please keep in touch.I look forward to hearing about your cruise....any questions on Legend..just ask. Regards, Carol

Hey Carol! Can't believe you haven't been to Oxford! Great fun to visit there. Then again any place in the UK is fun- My own opinion of course! My niece is working on an exchange program at Stratford-Upon-Avon. She is working on her PHD in English Lit. It would be great if she got that next summer then my decision would be really easy. Enjoy the fall! MN is just beginning to git ready for the fall, soon all the leaves will be red and gold..... Later! Gabrielle

We sailed on 19th Aug on the LOS from Southampton. It was the easiest embarkation and disembarkation ever. 1st class. I was travelling with my husband, sister & her 13 year old son. He thoroughly enjoyed himself. On the first day we located the Optix club where I hoped he'd meet friends. We left him in there and had a sneak peak through the curtains. He was standing alone at the counter area waiting for a coke. That made us sad as he was alone. However a few minutes later we saw he was playing table football with a couple of lads and that was it - hardly saw him the rest of the cruise. There was a curfew of midnight for under 17's but it they were taking part in organised activities with the club they could stay out till 2pm!! The first night his mum had to go looking for him cos she was so worried. He did eventually stroll in at 1.20am! He always joined us for dinner though and looked smart in his school trousers and smart shirts. Although after a while we was moaning that other kids were wearing jeans & shorts etc. We stuck to our guns though and made him dress up. Who cares what everyone else was wearing - we were following the guidelines.

The entertainment was a bit dodgy though. And the wait for the much hyped delayed "Mick Miller" was a big anti-climate. Heard most of it before.

My sister enjoyed it also. She visited the spa, bingo & movies. We went on 3 tours and enjoyed the bus tour round Guernsey the best. What a gorgeous place to live. We did the walking tour in Lisbon which I would not recommend as Lisbon is so hilly and there were insufficient toilet breaks.

There were signs of wear on the ship - you noticed it during the walk a mile. Bad marking on the decks and some of the sunbeds looked a bit ropy.

The beds were comfortable but it was a hassle getting rid of all the bed furniture - the spread thing along the bottom of the bed and the 2 bolster type pillows which made the bed look good but then you just had nowhere to put them when you were actually in bed. We used to stuff them on top of the cupboard!

The windjammer was a nightmare to try and get a table. We always had to split up into 2's and one time I went to sit down and this chap said, "that table's taken". I looked at him indicating it was empty and he said "its for my sons". I didn't want to cause a scene but I watched him get up and get 2 cereal bowls and packs of cereal and they sat there on the tables for the whole time we were at breakfast and the kids never did appear. Other people had had their breakfast but were sitting chatting over a cup of coffee. That's fine but they could have taken their coffee and moved out to a seating area and let others enjoy their breakfast. The selection was excellent but I was put off by the constant hassle of trying to find a table. It just spoiled it for me. We went to the dining room for breakfast & lunch most of the time and had breakfast delivered to the cabin one morning when we had a 7am trip. They remembered everything (except the orange juice). We tipped £2. It was worth it.

We did the bridge tour and Jordan (13) was impressed - which was what I was hoping. It was the best bridge tour we've ever had and it lasted about 40 mins. At the very end the Captain came and chatted for a bit. As Captain Nik was going on vacation after this trip the replacement captain was onboard and was shadowing Captain Nik just getting the lay of the land. He was very approachable as well.

Captain Nik always used to say "make time for yourself" and this cruise certainly allowed us to do that. Every one of us enjoyed it for different reasons.

Hi John...missed your post..been away for awhile. we are in Oakwood..3 miles from the center of Derby..for the past 20 years. It is quite a nice area on the verge of the countryside..yet with the city close at hand. Derby is being radically rebuilt and re designed. A massive re construction program.. carrying on till 2009. A huge new shopping area..and access roads... rivaling the meadow hall shoping mall in Sheffield. my Hubby is from Kent..Isle of sheppey..I am from Hollywood, florida originally. regards, Carol

Hi Stillman Family...wishing you all a fantastic cruise. if you have any questions... just let me know. Have you seen the website

www.virtualtoursusa.com/legendseas.htm ? it gives a virtual tour of Legend. Bear in mind...Many areas have been updated since then...Especially the windjammer Cafe..which is far superior...and the solarium which has a lot of plants and greenery making it very lush. All the beds/bedding are brand new in the cabins..and are very sumptuous. However, the atmosphere and the general appearance..is very accurate.. the airy and light feeling...the public lounges...and the layouts...give a good impression. All the Best, Carol

Hi Lesley...so glad to hear that you enjoyed your cruise on Legend. You were getting on... sadly..as we were just leaving! It was our second Med cruise on Legend..and it far surpassed the first. you mentioned the bedding being a problem..extra pillows..and runner across the bottom. I was surprised..as Our steward removed these and stowed them each night for us. We found The windjammer was far busier for us this cruise as well. Much more than our first cruise on Legend last year...when we never waited for a seat..or shared a table. Even though...the ship appeared far more crowded last year.. which is the funny thing. However, we soon worked it out. This years' crowd of passengers'... started the day much later. We generally go to breakfast around 9 or 9.30. last year breakfast ended at 10..and everyone seemed to be up at 7 am.and finished by then. We were the last to eat..and with little competition. This year everyone started the day much later..and breakfast ended at 11. We still had no major problems..we just had to join the end of a larger table a few times. Meeting mixed response from the fellow diners. Generally very friendly. Normally you can avoid this situation..a lack of seating.. by staggering meal times..and avoiding the initial rush.

I must admit..we had a really great group of passengers this cruise. Much friendlier than last year.Everyone talked to you and smiled. The only problem in the entire cruise....as school was out...We had Quite a few unruly young teens causing havoc to everyone...especially late night...as they gathered together after the disco on deck 10.. Security was kept very, very, busy. I am not talking messing about...laughing and having fun.. which you can totally accept. That was the situation last year. Lots and lots of kids... but no real problems. I am talking serious yob behaviour this time. Lads looking quite a bit older than the girls. Around 16 or 17..trying to push their weight around. Please do not think I am associating your nephew with this situation either. just because he was up late. That is nothing like these kids. He had family waiting for him and checking on him...making sure he behaved... these kids didn't. they ran wild.

We were blocked from the lifts one night on our way back to the cabin at 1am. It was a bit scary..this was a well built young man..with a good many friends in tow. We were both completely sober..but this young kid clearly wasn't. He stepped in..and held up the lift..with his gang of mates on the outside...him on the inside. No other passengers but us. They were all shouting at each other. Many had been drinking. More were showing up from the deck below. we politely asked him and his mates.. to either come in.. or out..so we could move the lift on... ..he then became very stroppy. We replied we only wanted to get to our cabin..as it was very, very late.. we then got a load of verbal abuse..before He finally moved out. On an earlier occasion..after dinner.. A large group of lads encountered my daughters alone in the corridor ..outside their cabin. Their behaviour worried the girls. On the last night....very late...this same gang..girls amongst them.. were in a confrontation in the solarium with another group of passengers. All were Having late night snacks...when this lot came in and started some trouble. one man actually stood up and was about to enter into a punch up with these kids..His wife was trying to drag him away.. when security came swarming in and broke it up. But the kids carried on..mouthing off and ignoring the security warnings to return to their cabins. Security were forced to chase these kids...as they all scampered. The parents should be held accountable. There was a midnight curfew..but the families were not adhering to it.Everyone blames the ship...but the families need to be responsible as well. They should be forced off if their kids have caused trouble..and they have been warned before. We later passed some of these same lads.. entering some cabins near us..filled with other 14 or 15 year old girls..all giggling and laughing..Not an adult in site. The girls could possibly be even younger.. it is hard to tell these days. But if trouble befalls these girls..the parents will almost certainly blame the cruiseline..not themselves.

.

In the entertainment areas.. we only attended 4 shows...partly because we overlooked the ones that were scheduled before dinner.(we were late sitting)...partly we were too busy or tired. we saw the 3 main headliners.."the beatlemaniacs"....the "Temptation tribute band."...the violinist "Gary livini"...and one of the ships dance/singer extravaganzas. We loved the beatles and the violinist...just fantastic. The Temptations also put on a great show..and were very friendly...and chatted with us.what we missed... some comediennes..an illusionist...an acrobatic family (they were on last year) and "Renee" from Renee and Renata..."save your love"..fame. As well as a few other RC shows.

We also had the ships' bridge tour..arranged by the crown and anchor ambassador. But sadly the kids missed out..as there were many invited that day. Numbers were limited we were first told...then later we were advised it was ok..but it was far too late by then to get the kids up there. Which I was upset about. We have met captain Nik last year. He is a very charming man. The other captain is as well..from all accounts. They share a rota.. Captain Nik left after our cruise last July 30th...and explained how the 2 captains share the post. 6 months on and 6 off. Anyway..glad to hear your review.. and that you all had a fantastic time. All the best. Carol

I thought I had better add a quick note here...as I am concerned some information I have written above... quite late at night... could well be misinterpreted. I would just like to clarify.. that In writing my comparisons above.. of our cruise this summer onboard Legend... with Lesleys'....I mentioned the problems encountered with some teens. Mainly.. because she had also mentioned the late night activities for kids..and the midnight curfew. All was fine on her cruise...no major incidents..as it was on our cruise last summer. This was Despite hundreds of kids being onboard during school holidays. they were All polite and just enjoying themselves. In no way...do I want to give the impression...or suggest.. that matters onboard Legend during our cruise.. were out of hand..or that there was imminent danger for other children. It was just a comparatively small group....who unfortunately we came across several times...making themselves a nuisance. The girls directly involved in this group.. were the concern I had. The ships' staff had the situation under control..Security were well aware of their behaviour...and were constantly patroling the upper decks at night..and throughout the corridors. The incident we had in the lift... was followed up by security..who were already on their way to break up the group. They were constantly watching them. We were not let down in any way with our cruise as a result of these kids behaviour. I did mark it on our survey..but It was the parents I was angry with...not the company. If We did not have a routine of stopping on deck late at night.....while my husband would have a smoke....we would not have come across these kids at all. I do not want people to worry that there are safety issues...and that legend is not a good choice. Problems with kids happen everywhere..and I am a mother of 3. Carol

We had over 500 children on our cruise but you would never have guessed it.

I know we personally drilled it into Jordan that we wanted him to enjoy himself but not to do anything that impacted negatively on someone else's enjoyment of the cruise. I think he got the message and we were very proud of him and his behaviour - at dinner especially. We sat with a couple who had kids aged 6 and 2 and he kept them entertained most of the time.

Carol,

Glad you enjoyed Gary Lovini, isn't he just brilliant, we saw him on our transatlantic crossing in May, have never done it before, but so impressed with his variation of music I stopped by after the show and bought one of his CD's, have it playing in the car most of the time. Not sure whether you know how he came by his name, in case you don't, here goes :- His real name is Gary Armstrong but as you may know in the UK if you are in acting or entertaining you have to join the union Equity, well when he applied somebody was already registered as Gary Armstrong so he had to think of another name and his father came up with the name LOVINI which is an anagram of VIOLIN, pretty neat I thought.

John.

I have a question about LOS. Now that casinos in Las Vegas and even locally use the voucher/ticket system in their slots instead of good ole quarters/nickels, has this carried on through to LOS? The reason I ask is that I realize this ship spends a good part of her year in Europe and wondered what currency is used in the slot machines there as she then heads over to N. America presumably with the same machines.

Can anyone shed any light on this? My family was discussing it the other night and we were hoping to use coins when we gamble, it just isn't the same winning a paper ticket instead of the ching chinging of cold hard cash!!

Not sure what currency they are using at the moment, wouldn't be surprised though if they are $$$$s as we sailed on her last October on the westbound transatlantic and they changed the currency back to $$$$$ overnight before we boarded, but there were quite a few logistical problems so I wouldn't be surprised if they left it alone this year. We are on her again for the transatlantic in 6 weeks time so we will find out. As of last year they had not converted to the paper version for your winnings. Although we were told as each ship goes in for refurbishment there is a good chance they will be converted.

If you are looking for a quiet escape to enjoy the sun, head for the very front of the ship, just outside the Shipshape Spa. It's heavenly, and the chairs and nice and cushy. ;)

Also, if you're not up for eating in the main dining room, opt for the Windjammer as most of the main entrees are available there in a casual atmosphere.

Be sure to say hello to Captain Nik, as he's usually out and about, greeting the passengers. He's always willing to pose for photos, too.

Also, the selection of books is pretty good in the library on Deck 7. Take a look, grab something that strikes your fancy and enjoy yourself!

If you have any specific questions, let me know..I'll be more than happy to help!

I also have all the Cruise Compass from our Western Carib. trip in December of 2005, if you're interested, I'd be more than happy to send you copies. Drop me an email at imatarb at mi-networks dot com.

I am so happy to find this thread and hear that Legend is still as wonderful as I remember. I have just received my birthday present from my husband which is the New Year's cruise out of Tampa this year. (Leigh-Anne, I have already responded to your post on the M&M board.) This will be our second cruise on Legend-our first was to Alaska in 1995.

I am delighted to hear the the ship has the new bedding- we are booked on two other cruises and neither of those ships will have the bedding installed before we cruise. It certainly sounds like the food is going to be excellent. All the in this thread is getting me very excited!

  • 2 months later...
we have had an aft JS on deck 8, we just love to sit out on the extra large balcony and watch the wake of the ship and enjoy a pre dinner drink out there with friends.
We have an Aft JS booked - just wondering what is on the 'sports deck' that is above them - hope it isn't a basketball court

Also where is this 'secret staircase from 8 up to the Solarium' please???

I already asked on another thread - does any one know what menus are on offer for their 7 night cruises? Thanks!

Just back (last Sat) from 7 night Western out of Tampa on Legend.

Having sailed on Rhapsody OTS and Serenade OTS this is what I have to compare to.

Since Rhapsody is a sister ship to Legend I sort of knew what to expect. I had a wonderful time on this cruise as this one was just my dd and I. Wanted to see if I could get her bitten by the "cruise bug" as my dh and I have been. The ports of call were one of the main reasons we booked this cruise as we really wanted to visit Belize, Costa Maya, Grand Cayman and Cozumel (altho I had already been to Grand C and Coz - my daughter had not) and we were not disappointed at any of these ports..... the crew of the ship was top notch (as RCI usual), the food and drinks too. That said I must add that I feel the ship is in need of "SOME NEWNESS" as many things are looking tired. Not bad - just tired. Understand I was sleeping on "new" beds but to tell you the truth I didnt notice any difference from the old beds. I slept well on either. Just a note: never - not once saw the Captain (on Serenade he was all over the ship) but Gavin "Oh Behave" the cruise director was great !!!

Any questions..... feel free to ask.

We also returned last Saturday from the Legend cruise to the Western Caribbean and had an Aft balcony, 8080. There was no noise from above, but you did need to watch out for the washing of the deck above, which happened anywhere from 8:45 am to 10:00 am. You get a fine mist of water, but not a downpour. Just keep the table and chairs under the overhang. The two loungers will get a little water but they dry quickly. We even continued eating our room service breakfast on the balcony while the washing was going on. We had a wonderful cruise and found the Legend ship and staff to be our favorite of our three RCCL cruises. Maybe that is because we like the older, smaller ships though. I did hear a few comments from those that missed a promenade. The staircase to the solarium is on the port side about six cabins back from the row of aft cabins. I'm afraid we jogged up to get pizza, burgers, fries and iced tea to eat on the balcony quite a few times. Have a wonderful trip "little britain".

but you did need to watch out for the washing of the deck above, which happened anywhere from 8:45 am to 10:00 am. You get a fine mist of water, but not a downpour.
- I'll remember to take my umbrella - LOL!

Thanks for this - any comments on the menus for the week - and the quality of the food in the Windjammer? thanks

I stayed in a JS on Legend this August (8522 just couple of doors from yours) and we had no trouble with noise from the Windjammer or pool. It was a lovely cabin in an excellent area for stairs/elevators etc. I am booked on the Western caribbean next April on Legend and have another JS mid ship, right beside the elevator:eek: hope this isnt noisy but my two sons can just pop to the internet cafe right next door and have fun

!Have a great cruise. You will love Legend I am sure!!!!She is very elegant, gleaming and beleive me, the beds are SOOOOOO comfy!! Best nights sleep I ever had I think apart from a Westin hotel in Philadelphia that is (must have been same beds!);) Hollyanna
