Uffuzi or Accademia

Recommended Posts

Hi,
I am requesting our driver to reserve museum tickets ahead of time for us while we are in Florence. Since we are there a short time I don't think we'll have time to visit both the Uffuzi and the Accademia and still have time to explore. So, if you had to, which would you choose?
Thanks,
Becky

That is a hard choice and I think you are right that you will have time to do only one. We chose the Accademia because we wanted to see Michaelangelo's David. The copies do not do this statue justice. We had seen his Pieta and Moses in Rome and really wanted to see David. A good case could definitely be made to make the other choice.

Well, there you go, that settles it! I'm emailing her to get us reservations to see David, the Accademia it is.
Thanks for the help,
Becky

Hi

DH and I just got back from the Galaxy's Transatlantic cruise. Our itinerary was changed to include Livorno and we arranged a tour to Florence. We actually had time to visit both galleries. "David" is superb and you're right - a restoration was just completed about mid-April. The Uffizi is equally appealing - especially with all its Botticelli works of art.

Hi all,
I would love to see both How much time would I need to allow in each one to make it worth while? We have to see David, but I read a bit on the Uffuzi and now I feel like I'm going to miss something if I skip it.

Thanks,
Becky

bec, go see "David" this time and plan another trip to the Uffizi. That is what I did. I went in 1998 and saw "David" and loved it. Now this time I have tickets for the Uffizi.

I also recommend the Museo del Duomo. This museum has absolutely gorgeous art. They have the original Ghilberti Baptistry doors and other masterpieces including unfinished "Slaves" by Michaelangelo. I saw both L'Accademia and Museu del Duomo in one visit.

I will add the Uffuzi to my list for a future visit. The longer it gets the more it means I have to return, right? I haven't even gotten to Europe and I already have an itinery going for the next time. Planning is so much fun!

Hi,

I am going to be in Florence in a few weeks. I am doing my own excursion so I can not ask a driver to prepurchase tickets. Is there any place on-line to reserve tickets for the Accademia? What types of lines should I expect if I arrive to the museum around 10 AM? Thanks.

We were in Florence on Saturday May 8, 2004. We had reservations (Daniele from driverinrome.com got them for us) for 12 noon. We arrived at 11:45 AM and walked right in. There were 50 to 60 people in line when we arrived and about the same number when we left.

Hi Mike,
I happened to put this website in my favorites when I was researching a few weeks ago, otherwise I never would have remembered

http://www.waf.it/museicity/eng/musei_uffizi_main.htm

You'll have to copy and past this, as my AOL software is damaged so graphics and links are not working properly

Hi Becky,

Thanks for the link, it is exactly what I was looking for. The website asks for a time. I have no idea what time we will make it there. Does the reservation time matter, or just the date? Thanks again!

I don't how rigid they are about the time. I'm having our reservations made with the idea that if we're there within the hour we'll be ok, that's the best I can do from here.
Good Luck and let us know how it works out.

i think you chose wisely with the accademia. david is worth seeing, and unless you have a large interest in art, going to both museums is a bit overwhelming when you only have 1 day in florence (and you will also want to have time for an authentic italian lunch and shopping). we actually went to both museums, had lunch in between, shopped and took the train to pisa, then to livorno. we did not allow enough time in pisa though and almost missed the ship.

we used a phone number from a travel guide (frommers or similar) to order our tickets for both museums. this saved us a lot of time for there were many people in line and we walked in w/o waiting at all.

have a great time.

Definitely David. Also consider the Bargello Museum in Florence. It is in a charming 13th Century building that was a prison at one time.

There are some early works by Michelangelo and many by Donatello, and an outstanding collection of della Robbia ceramics!

The Bargelllo is more intimate and manageable than the Uffizi and usually isn't nearly as crowded. It is a real treat!
