Fort Lauderdale/Miami Hotels

Am flying to US (Miami) a couple of days before cruise from Fort Lauderdale. Would like to have half a day shopping (maybe Sawgrass). Anyone suggest midprice hotels that would be good to combine shopping and beach? Or would it be better to get a hotel close to airport first night (arrive at 4pm so by the time we get through customs will be quite late I guess), do shopping next morning and then go to 2nd hotel for r and r before cruise?

Plan B sounds like the best to me. Relax near Bayside in MIA downtown - go for a nice meal, swim in the pool, have a good nights sleep. If you pick up the rental car at the airport, be prepared to pay a parking fee at downtown hotels. Drive to Sawgrass then to Hotel in FLL.

My choice would be to head straight for Ft Lauderdale. Take the thirty minute drive from MIA to the LaQuinta in Hollywood. The LaQuinta is 20 minutes from Sawgrass Mills and 10 minutes from the Beach. Good mid-priced hotel in a conveniant location (with free parking) for anything you might want to do.;)
