Gaprofitt Posted September 14, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 14, 2006 Hi All, I am going on CB this weekend and have a question. I am a non-smoker but have some friends who want me to bring back cigarettes. They prefer Doral Menthol or Newport Menthol. How much are they per carton? Also any problem checking them in my luggage and how many can I bring back? Thanks, Greg
kaykay51 Posted September 14, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 14, 2006 You can bring 10 cartons home. We were on the CB in March and bought Marlboro lights in St. Thomas, paying 16.00 a carton I believe. In St. Maarten we saw them for 11 or 12.00 a carton. We had no problem bringing them back on board the ship, just had to convince the security people at the gangway that it was cigarettes and not booze. The store packed them in carrying cases for us that you could probably just carry on the plane home or open the carton and put the cartons in your checked luggage, which is what we did. Hope this helps Kay

drpack Posted September 14, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 14, 2006 Why would they have cared if it was booze, you can still bring booze back on the ship right? Yes you can buy booze, but the will usually take it and store until the last night of the cruise when they will deliver it to your room. There was one time when they didn't take mine, but it was our last port of call and near the end of the cruise.
emdia43 Posted September 14, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 14, 2006 They were $22 per carton in the ship's store in July.
beachpeach1 Posted September 14, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 14, 2006 Hope you have a great time on the CB! We are traveling on the same ship in Febraury. Please post a review when you return and give us all the lovely details!!
lindasuej Posted September 15, 2006 #7 Share Posted September 15, 2006 They were $22 on the ship and there was not a large variety to chose from. They were cheaper in St. Martin than St. Thomas. I paid $10.95 for a carton of Marlboro last week in St Martin. Linda
S.S.Oceanlover Posted September 15, 2006 #8 Share Posted September 15, 2006 The last 2 cruises we have been on they told us only 1 carton per person without paying duty. How many you could bring back if you pay the duty we didn't ask. It's still probably much cheaper to just pay the duty than to buy them when home. kaykay51 Posted September 15, 2006 #9 Share Posted September 15, 2006 I just reread my reply. It's 5 cartons per person you can bring home for a total of 10 cartons per couple. Sorry for any confusion. Kay
peterv Posted September 15, 2006 #10 Share Posted September 15, 2006 Only if you buy them in St Thomas IIRC. Everywhere else the normal rules apply, not that customs care all that much, unless you need a forklift to get them off the ship. :D Cheers, Peter
Hello-Kitty Posted September 15, 2006 #11 Share Posted September 15, 2006 i took a few cartons home myself, they were 21.95 on the ship but way cheaper at ports, when we did embark they asked me how many cartons i lied:confused: i said two. You are only allowed 2 cartons tax free?? That is what the staff said on the ship
mcrika Posted September 15, 2006 #12 Share Posted September 15, 2006 You can bring back 5 cartons per person. There is a store in the Havensight shopping area in St. Thomas that sells Doral for $8-9 per carton.
ISABELLA Posted September 15, 2006 #13 Share Posted September 15, 2006 They were $21.95 / carton on board, $16.95 - in St Thomas, $10.95 - $11.95 in St Maarten. And if you find big 4 carton pack, they are $36-$45 for 4 cartons. We bought Camel for $36.00/ 4 carton pack in St Maarten.
TourneyKit Posted September 15, 2006 #14 Share Posted September 15, 2006 Paid $8.00 per carton for Winstons in St. Martin last year in 4 packs. Bought sixteen cartons. Turned around and bought 12 cartons of Marlboros for $12.00 ea. Thought I might catch some flack getting back on the ship (Princess Dawn) nobody said a word (except some non smokers in the elevator). Bought a cheap duffle bag in Cozumel ($10.00) and filled it with our dirty clothes and packed the cigarettes in our luggage. Delcared them all with customs, was more than willing to pay the 10% duty, and they didn't say boo. However, when I got home, I found on the Net, by law, you can only bring back 200 cigarettes from "out of the country". They could have confiscated them all. That would not apply to St. Thomas or San Juan. The five cartons are alright from there. I figure I saved $1,200 overall from what I would pay here in Michigan. Knocked the cost of our cruise by more than half. This year, doing B2Bs out of San Juan on the Crown, I'm trying to find out if I can mail them home from either St. Thomas or San Juan. I'm told that you can't from St. Thomas, still trying to find out if I declare them on the first leg when we return to San Juan if I can mail home ten cartons. Then pick up and declare another ten cartons when we come back to San Juan again. I'll buy the Winstons in St. Martin, but the Marlboros were not the same as stateside there so I'll try to pick them up in St. Thomas. Then again, I may shoot for broke:) and buy 30 cartons in St. Martin and claim them again through Customs.
