Best snorkeling and cheap beer

What is the best area to snorkle the barrier reef and drink some cheap beer? Last time we took the ships tour to half moon bay. This time, we want to canopy and snorkle. We can get a cab for the day, but want to know where we are going and not have the driver just take us "somewhere". Any suggestions?

We did the canopy tour/snorkeling/cheap beer:) thing back in June. Our day in Roatan was the highlight of our trip.

There were 8 of us

Van for the day $80 - airconditioned, driver spoke English

1st stop - canopy tour - $35 per person + hefty tip

Driver met us at the bottom and took us to a beach adjacent to Taybana? beach. The whole area, except Taybana is public. We parked ourselves on the sand under a palm tree and snorkeled out past the ropes of Taybana to an awesome reef area.

Now to the cheap beer - there were several guys with ice chests on wheels - the one we kept returning to was selling cold beer - 2 for $1.00!!! When he ran out of cold ones, we paid another guy $3.50 for 2!

Have fun...

Talk about cheap beer! Thanks for the tip! Did they rent the snorkle equiptment there? If so, how much? Where would we tell our driver to go to get to this beach area? Did you book this with someone or just grab a taxi at he port? How many were in your party? We have three and were told it woud be $20pp. Good deal or what? Thanks again!

we were in Roatan last fall......i think we may have been at the same beach area that soopermom was at.....it was located in the west bay.....the snorkeling was superb and right off the beach....beer and food was cheap....i didnt notice any snorkeling gear for rent there though......you can get there very cheaply if you desire....for two of us we paid $5 one way to take a cab to west end.....from there you can catch a water taxi right next to Fosters bar....the water taxi is like $1.50 per person.....it takes you right to west bay.......they will try and scam you on the taxi ride, so make sure you bargain.....you can also take a land taxi the entire way from the ship to west bay....it takes longer though and costs around $15ish if you bargain for the price....we never worried about finding cabs or a way home....make friends with the locals and they will hook you up:)

Hi Charyoung - we paid $10 per person for the cab. Just make sure that your cabbie speaks English, agrees to a fee for the day and is OK being paid at the end of the day. I am sure all the drivers know where the Canopy tours are and then which beach is best. Four in our group did rent snorkel equipment from Ron at Bananaramas - it was a disaster. The beach area is full of small resorts so I am sure there are alot of places to rent - just avoid Ron if possible!
