Mariner 11/26/96-12/03/06 Review

We live in the Orlando area. We left home about 9:45AM and arrived at the port at about 10:45AM or so. We parked the cars (5 of us traveling) and took our luggage to a porter to check it. We tipped the porter, and once again, I didn't see the no tipping signs that have been reported. We boarded the ship within 20-30 minutes after we went thru security on the first floor.

We weren't able to go to our cabins until 1PM so we went to the Windjammer for lunch. The food was typical Windjammer except for the carved roast beef. That was as tender as could be and I probably could have eaten just that.

After lunch we went to our cabin. This was our first time on a Voyager class ship and we had a JS, as did my sister and her husband. My dad, traveling alone, had a D1 which was plenty large enough for him. Our cabin steward came to introduce himself and we had a few questions for him. Before the cruise, I called to Special Needs and requested a refrig that was cold enough for medicine as well as a sharps container. I also requested the beds be separated and that we both had egg crates. We didn't notice any of those things, so we asked the steward who said he wasn't notified of any of our requests. He did remove the snacks from the refrig so we could put the med in and fortunately we brought out own sharps container.

Our steward, Shefforn, did try to get us egg crates, but none were available so he got comforters covered in duvets and put them under the mattresses. They made the bed quite comfortable. We didn't have robes either and we asked him about them and were told we would get them later as they were being laundered. My sister had the same cabin steward but my dad had a different one. His cabin came with a robe.

We were going to meet CC members at the pool at 2:30 but my dad left his carry on somewhere on the ship and he called me shortly before we were to leave so we spent time finding the bag. Fortunately, he left it in the Windjammer and an employee found it and gave it to the greeter. She put it away so we were able to re-claim it. We were very lucky as he had his passport and his meds in that bag.

Our luggage came shortly after we found the bag, so we decided to unpack. Then it was time for the muster drill. My husband walks with a cane abd also has trouble standing for any length of time sothe crew allowed him to lean against some stacked up chairs so that made it a bit easier for him.

After the drill, we just lounged around and then got ready for dinner. We had second seating and decided to go to the Concierge Lounge about an hour before dinner. The lounge was full, so an overflow lounge, Cloud 9 was opened. There weren't a lot of people in there. The server was very friendly and we had a couple of drinks before dinner. The other nights we were able to go to the actual Concierge Lounge. We had Riccardo who was great.

Our first night dinner was wonderful. The prime rib was very tender. We had a great waitress, (Elena from Romania)very poor (first night only) assistant waiter and a great head waiter (Erminiu Cornea from Romania.) The assistant waiter didn't refill any water or iced tea glasses. He never asked about coffee. Elena had to help him clear the tables. We could see that she wasn't happy with him. I asked her if he was her usual assistant and she said no. She did talk to the headwaiter and so did we when he asked us about the service. From then on, the assistant was good. I also asked Eminiu if my brother-in-law could have escargot more than one night and if my dad could have shrimp cocktail more than one night and he said he would take care of it. He did too!

The dining room food at dinner was usually good. Some nights were better than others. The lamb t-bones were excellent as was the osso bucco, but the chicken marsala had no taste. I am allergic to shrimp so I asked for 2 lobster tails and my brother-in-law asked if my shrimp could be put on his plate and our requests were honored by Elena. I am not a dessert person so I didn't try but a few and those I tried were good. My husband is an ice cream person so he had ice cream for dessert every night.

We also went to Portofino. It is without a doubt my favorite restaurant. The waiter Zeljko Plecko was the best we have ever had. I ate very little during the day so I would have room for dinner. I am kind of glad we don't have a restaurant like that near here or I would weigh a lot more than I do now. We tried to get reservations for Chops, but were told we could only go at 6 or 9PM because there were 5 of us. I think that's really unfair. I asked the reservation person if we could get a table for 2 and one for 3 and be near each other and he said no, but that he was sure the manager could accomodate us. She was to call us or we were to call her as she came on duty at 5PM. This was the first day and I called her at 5:30. She said she was just going to call me, and no, we couldn't come at 7. NO NO NO, when I asked about tables for 2 or 3 she said there weren't any reservations left. I told her I had asked about the tables at 12:00 and she told me basically, tough. So, we didn't get to Chops.

We did have lunch or continental breakfast on the Promenade. We enjoyed that a lot. Service in the dining room at breakfast and lunch was quite slow and many people were complaining. Our headwaiter was there one morning and he said if anyone wanted faster service, they needed to tell the waiter. There was no rush and at lunch there is a Brasserie lunch menu, that I was aware of, but didn't ask for it, so it wasn't the fault of the dining room.

We didn't go to the shows except for the ice show. It was wonderful. We did spend a lot of time in the casino hoping to win. We lost all week playing the slots and the last day I won a bit so it made our losses less. I do have to say the casino was smokey. I would try to play where there was no one next to me, but invariable a smoker would sit down and chain smoke. Well, at least, I got to try a lot of machines because of the smokers.

My only other complaint is that we didn't get an invitation to the repeaters cocktail party. We found out about it when it was almost over and asked our cabin steward. He said that people at our end of the ship didn't get them and that it happens often. He told us to just go and show our Sea Pass card and we could get in. It was too late for us to change clothes etc. so we didn't go. I thought that was poor service on the part of RCI. He also said that there were over 100 diamond cruisers so that was why robes weren't available initially.

We loved the ports, and the ship and crew. We made reservations to go again in Jan 2008. My husband and I are going on Mariner again in May so you can see we really enjoyed the ship. I know each cruise has a few problems, it's part of cruising. We also didn't notice people's outfits.--well, my brother-in-law and husband did notice one lady who wore really low cut outfits every night. It was the highlight of the cruise for them I think, lol.

We also didn't notice a lot of kids. I know there were some, but they were well-behaved. Near our table was a family with 2 kids, 3 and 6. They were soooooooooo good. Another day at lunch a family with a 3 year old sat with us. She also was good. Of course seeing them made us miss our 18mo old granddaughter even more.

We were the first color called for disembarkation so we were off the ship, thru customs and on our way by 8:15. Fortunately, we found a porter and he wheeled all our luggage to the car. Well worth the tip to him. We were home at 9:30AM even with some foggy areas.

If anyone has any questions we will try to provide answers.

Katie

I'm reading more and more about rough seas. Did you experience this at all? I'm used to cruising but am always aware of the movement. Some times it takes more getting used to than other times.

This is our first time cruising over Winter months and not sure if the Caribbean as a whole is more rough this time of year or not.

I love cruising as much as the next person but I'd be homesick cruising for 10 straight years. You must have some stories to tell being out in the ocean for that long.:p

ALSO CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE BRASSIERRE MENU? AND CAN YOU GET LUNCH FASTER IF YOU ASK? :p

They actually call it "Brassierre 30" -- indicating you can get lunch within 30 minutes. We did not have lunch in the B-30 last week at all ... and a couple days just opted for the Cafe Promenade for a slice of pizza or small sandwich for lunch.

This is our first time cruising over Winter months and not sure if the Caribbean as a whole is more rough this time of year or not.

It was a little rough last Thursday ... the Capt. Per said the waves were 15-18' -- a little rolly, but did not affect my wife and I -- BUT -- the dining room had a lot of empty chairs last Thursday! Capt Per did announce he was following the same route back going south of Grand Bahamas Island rather than north, so that we would have smooter waters. It was MUCH better on Friday, Saturday was quite smooth. In fact we enjoyed the waves rocking us to sleep at night!

The Brasserie menu is available in the dining room at lunch. If you order a main course and dessert only, you will be out of the dining room in 30 minutes. I almost think it needs to be ordered from a special menu too. We ordered only a main course and dessert as did most of the others at our table, but some entrees took a while to get done.

My husband was told the seas are usually rough until January. Normally, we sail from San Juan at this time of year and seem to miss the bad seas. I agree with Bill that they were quite rough coming from St. Martin. Originally we went quite slowly, but the next day when the weather was better, our speed increased. It was funny to watch us walk as it seemed as though we were drunk when in fact we had nothing to drink at that point.

The egg crates are a foam rubber covering for a mattress that looks like an egg crate. They are used in hospitals and also on beds that aren't the best. I forgot to mention that my sister asked our steward for one and she didn't get it when she asked. They put the same type comforter/duvet on her bed, but her bed was so much like a hammock, it did nothing. Her husband's side of the bed wasn't as bad. In St. Thomas, RCI bought an eggcrate for her bed. When she came to the room that night, it was there, in a K Mart wrapper. The steward put it on the bed.

Bill, I thought I proofread everything, but I never checked the title. Good catch. Sorry. Maybe, when I get to be a nursing home patient, I will try cruising for 10 years straight.

We were on the ship with you this past week. We missed the meet and mingle, for a good reason but for the life of me I can't remember why.

We loved the ship. Getting on the ship was an adventure we drove over the day before and on Sat a.m. I get a call from the mother of one of the teens I was taking that they couldn't find her birth certificate. To make a long story short she ended up getting on with a drivers license and an expired passport (very long overdue to be renewed). but even with that I don't think it took us more then 40 minutes from the shuttle to the Promanade!

I was truely amazed at the ship she is beautiful. I was impressed that she was so well kept. My bed to was uncomfortable and asked for an egg crate the second day and got the comforter. It did make it better also asked for extra pillows and got them.

We enjoyed the dinning room our waiter Frank was wonderful, the ass't Patricia well lets say she doesn't seem to enjoy her job. We also had Erminiu for our head waiter. He was great with the three teens told them jokes, did card tricks for them. He scored big points by having the Chef make a carrot cake for my husband the last night!

It was difficult with the teen girls two were 17 and couldn't get into anywhere to dance the other just turned 18 and they wouldn't let her in the kids club. Poor things all they wanted to do was dance! They spent alot of time on the Cafe Promanade with James and Sheldon. Very nice guys and very personable.

We didn't go to the specialty restaurants but two couple inour group went to Chops they loved it. We did go to the re-peaters cocktail party it was nice. There was one couple there who had sailed with RCL alone 140 times! Saw the wife off the ship with one of the crew carrying her shopping bags.

We too are planning on going on her again, haven't booked yet but I would like to do the western side.

Oh yeah our room steward was Henry and and the girls had Made on deck 6. Both went above and beyond. The other two couples had Suzanne on deck 7 and loved her also.

As far as the rough seas only one of us had a real problem one of the girls was so sick she popped blood vessels in her eyes. She waited to long to tell us and then the wrist bands and the meds didn't work well, it was an early to bed night for her!

Katie, we sat with the low cut lady at the Grand Buffet! Was not a pretty site!

We are sailing on the Mariner 1/14/07 and are also in a JS room. You mentioned in your post about Concierge. Does JS qualify for concierge service, and if so did you have to ask for it?

Also, we have an 11:30 flight out of Orlando, what time did you disembark.

Thanks for any answers you can give me.

Hi Katie-

Loved your review and was sorry we didn't meet on board (although we might have if your lunch with the 3 year old was at a round table in WindJammer with a little girl...).

We also missed the 2:30 meeting at the pool bar and the meet and mingle due to nap time, and I mean DH and I were also asleep.

We were in the aft balcony cabin you originally booked, 1690, so I wanted to let you know it was great- big enough for 2 chairs, 2 loungers and a small table. And thanks to this board, I was not completely surprised when I returned to our cabin several afternoons to find maintenance on the balcony painting.

We were in the Sound of Music dining room, main seating and had Mihai as our waiter and Anthea as assistant- they were amazing. We were at a table for 6 with another couple and their 4 year old son, and Mihai and Anthea were great with both kids, including bringing out water based markers to keep them entertained during dinner.

We never made it to the dining room for breakfast or lunch- we usually hit WindJammer which was great.

We had booked a reservations for Chop on departure day, but had to cancel when the only ice tickets I could get were for our exact dinner reservation- Wed at 7pm.

LOVED the ice show, but could totally do without the chaos of getting the tickets- that was a madhouse.

My only other complaint for the sailing was with the ship's photographer who was assigned to do the casual portraits one evening- he just simply did not want to do his job. He offered no suggestions for poses for the 3 of us, which was the opposite of my experience on the Sovereign in 7/06. We did end up with a nice pose that we ordered for our holiday cards on the ship (didn't realize they could do this, but DH saw the sign noting 50 cards for $40 with envelopes) but that was because I recalled seeing that pose on the Sovereign.

For those with small children, we did use AO 3 times, but we were paged on Tuesday morning when our 3 yr old DD was in tears, crying that she missed us. Not quite sure what, if anything, happened in AO- we did try to probe with various questions for the remainder of the cruise but never got a clear answer from her about why she refused to go back to AO. We chalked it up to her being at the younger end of the 3-5 year old group and plan to try again next cruise.

Sorry we didn't connect with more CC members while on board, but I'm glad to see most of you enjoyed this cruise, too.

Wendy

We had access to the JS because we are Diamond Members of C&A. Being in a JS alone doesn't qualify you for access to the lounge (That is according to the Concierge) If you use search, you will find a thread that is quite controversial regarding JS and the lounge. I don't want to post my opinion again as I don't want to get into arguments. There is alcohol served from 5-8:30PM and no children are allowed in the lounge during that time.

We were off the ship about 8:00 or so as we had the first color called. The cruiseline asks what time your flight is when you board so that they can give you the correct color tags for debarkation. We were home by 9:30 and my sister was at the airport by that time too. My sister left on an 11AM flight and had no trouble. If you can carry off your own bags, you will be off somewhere between 7 and 7:30 I would think. Supposedly, you have to be able to carry your bags onto an escalator if you carry them off, but we did see people using the elevators.

As far as getting egg crates in advance, it's kind of 50/50. There are a limited number of them and that's why we requested them in advance. As mentioned they weren't there. I think once the new bedding is on the ship, the egg crates won't be necessary. Should you want to call to arrange for them, the number is 1-800-722-5472. Just ask for special needs. Hopefully, they will have it/them for you.

We are in pr cabins 6287 and 6289 12/17. Were you by chance around that area? Others in our group are 6587 and 6589. I ask because we are bringing some xmas items for our steward and don't know if male or female. We've always had male stewards.

Grandeur, we were in 6283 had the view of the Promanade. Our steward was Henry. If they don't move them around he will probably be yours. he is very nice and like I said kept our room great.

Katie, See you have the Mariner booked two more times. I can't wait to book again. Have to wait DH got laid off a week and a half before we left so need to wait a little bit.
