The "ç" is spoken out as a "s". This is a old Portuguese letter, seldom used anymore, I was told.

I've been breaking my head how to explain 'Curaçao' to you folks, and here Pat has given a good fonetic description!

 

...but we locals call our island "KORSOU" [cor-sow].

I asked my mother this the other day b/c Curaçao isn't too far from my parents' birthplace (Guyana)

I was born and raised in Curacao and I still live here. So I'm pretty sure I know the pronunciation. It is CURE-AH-SOW (like COW)....

My point is - I would never tell a native person from another country how to pronounce his/her country correctly.

 

I know my country, its history, culture, background and yes - also how to pronounce the name of the country I was born and raised in.

Where did I tell you how to pronounce your country's name? I never said your pronunciation was wrong or anything of that sort. I just said how the PORTUGUESE people in my family's country pronounce a PORTUGUESE word. You just started getting excited and assuming this and that for no reason.
