Administrators Rare LauraS Posted August 3, 2004 Administrators #1 Posted August 3, 2004 The following information was provided to Cruise Critic from the nice folks over at Carnival Corporate. This should clear up any questions you may have had: "At approximately 3:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, a guest or guests aboard the cruise ship Carnival Miracle accessed an area of the vessel that is normally locked and unoccupied at that time and utilized the ship's public address system to make a prank announcement that included an 'abandon ship' directive. Following that, multiple announcements were made by ship's personnel, including the vessel's captain, assuring guests that the initial announcement was an apparent prank and to disregard it. The captain then personally met and talked with numerous guests to offer further reassurances. The vessel docked a few hours later at the Port of New York at its scheduled arrival time for the termination of the voyage. The ship was on a seven-day cruise to The Bahamas and Port Canaveral, which had departed New York the previous Saturday, July 24".
brn2crz Posted August 3, 2004 #2 Posted August 3, 2004 Allrighty then.. Thank You Laura. You are spending a lot of time on this,so obviously you have your reasons... But,isn't that pretty much the info that the OP put out on the original thread? Anyway... Thanks again... Now,all you skeptics... bad dog,no biscuit.
Administrators Rare LauraS Posted August 3, 2004 Author Administrators #3 Posted August 3, 2004 The original post was not removed because of it's inital content. The post was removed because it became disruptive and turned into a slugfest. And before anyone comes on and says "I read it and it was fine..."...it wasn't. Cruise Critic does not remove negative posts about a cruise line. Post are almost always removed because of the inappropriate reaction by some of our members to the negative posts. Now, back to the discussion at hand, please.... Laura
brn2crz Posted August 3, 2004 #4 Posted August 3, 2004 ok...I know..back to the subject at hand..But I can't resist. Slug Fest!!!... Is that why the weight lifting avatar ?...:D Thanks again Laura!!
mohavemommy Posted August 3, 2004 #5 Posted August 3, 2004 Laura, Thanks so much for finding out the truth about this incident. If anybody can find out if these individuals were caught and/or punished, I would like to know.
NewCruzer1 Posted August 3, 2004 #6 Posted August 3, 2004 Thank you , Laura. I observed the original fracas, and appreciate your rumor control. I, too, hope the perpetrators face consequences, both those aboard and a-board.
herb Posted August 3, 2004 #7 Posted August 3, 2004 I'm curious to know what happened to those who pulled the prank...were they arrested, or was it just a stern finger-wagging...
Jane789 Posted August 3, 2004 #8 Posted August 3, 2004 I'm curious to know what happened to those who pulled the prank...were they arrested, or was it just a stern finger-wagging... It says on http://www.cruisenewsdaily.com that no arrests were made due to lack of evidence.
hstrybuf Posted August 3, 2004 #9 Posted August 3, 2004 Laura, thank you for giving us the official word on the Miracle incident. Too bad that they couldn't punish the person(s) responsible for creating such havoc.
derf5585 Posted August 3, 2004 #10 Posted August 3, 2004 I was searching for this story for about the past few days using the search terms "abandon ship""Carnival Miracle". Going to New York TV and Radio web sites, Msnbc.com and Cnn.com. I didn't find it anywhere so I decided the story was false. Then from another cruise site I found the story that "A passenger reported" the incident. I thought only "A" passenger reported this. Out of the whole ship only one passenger reported this. So I decided the story was false. 1. Was this story "killed" by the media. (consperisy theory) 2. I want to thank "CruiseCritic" for digging into to this story and finding the truth The only problem is that "I can't handle the truth"
GoinCruisin Posted August 3, 2004 #11 Posted August 3, 2004 I would guess it probably wasn't "news worthy" enough to blast out through the media, doubtful it was any sort of conspiracy... kids play pranks everywhere, if the news was bombarded with all the pranks, there would never be any time for all the glorious political ads :D
artsytart Posted August 3, 2004 #12 Posted August 3, 2004 guests aboard the cruise ship Carnival Miracle accessed an area of the vessel that is normally locked and unoccupied . I hope that more sensitive areas of the ship that are "normally locked" are better secured than this. Not a happy thought !
DreadPirateRobert Posted August 3, 2004 #13 Posted August 3, 2004 Too bad the scurvy dogs weren't caught and punished. The Cap'n should have made 'em "dance with the cat" There's just no room for that kind of behavior.
MrPete Posted August 3, 2004 #14 Posted August 3, 2004 Too bad the scurvy dogs weren't caught and punished. The Cap'n should have made 'em "dance with the cat" Being a pirate, I figured you'd of 'ad em WALK THE PLANK.
JerseyJim2 Posted August 3, 2004 #15 Posted August 3, 2004 I would guess it probably wasn't "news worthy" enough to blast out through the media, doubtful it was any sort of conspiracy... kids play pranks everywhere, if the news was bombarded with all the pranks, there would never be any time for all the glorious political ads :D If the news was bombarded with pranks, it would encourage many others to think of even "greater" pranks. If you've ever been to a Major League baseball game you will always see one or two idiot fans run out onto the field. They are immediately arrested and hauled away. However, you will never see them on television. The policy is to not give them their 15 seconds of fame and thereby reward them and make disorderly conduct a sport.
derf5585 Posted August 3, 2004 #16 Posted August 3, 2004 "it probably wasn't "news worthy" enough" According to some posts it make a couple of New York TV newscasts and nothing on their websites.
DeckCadet Posted August 3, 2004 #17 Posted August 3, 2004 I hope that more sensitive areas of the ship that are "normally locked" are better secured than this. Not a happy thought !Normally locked and unoccupied.......That rules out: Bridge: Locked and occupied 24/7 CD cabin: locked and occupied Purser's desk: probably occupied that means DINING ROOM LOCKED and UNOCCUPIED after dinner! with a passenger area PA access.
serene56 Posted August 3, 2004 #18 Posted August 3, 2004 How come when I cruised we were never able to hear the announcements in the cabin. We always had to open the door to hear anything that was being said. Did I have poor cabin locations? seems this persons message went directly into cabins. Shame the person who did that wasnt caught and punished. That kind of action should have a consequence..
brn2crz Posted August 3, 2004 #19 Posted August 3, 2004 disclaimer: I sincerly hope my comments on this do not get this removed, and I apologize in advance if it does. There have been many issues,on several boards the past few days that have been ,if not controversial, then at least, questionable. The big issue on the RCI board,is the new rules on talking about TA"S ,every post related to this has been pulled. On here, this topic is the disappearing wonder. Yet,on the NCL board, and on Roll Calls, there is much mention of agents,TA's and online agencies. Now,this has caused me to venture out into some other areas. And I gotta say,I do not like whats out there.I guess the other BB that is in closest competition with CC is the one I am refering most to.Rumors and statements about what went onboard the Miracle are ridiculous, out of hand, and if allowed to be on this board would probably cause a near riot! Also, the slamming of this board is pretty funny also ,CC that is.That is not allowed on this board. So,while many of us question things that the Mods do..(me included,as one of my very popular threads is now ashes as well) I think given the option of thoughts and words allowed to run wild,or some symbalance of order...I will take the latter... Thank You Laura & CC for providing "safe Harbour"
CoachTerry14 Posted August 3, 2004 #20 Posted August 3, 2004 How come when I cruised we were never able to hear the announcements in the cabin. We always had to open the door to hear anything that was being said. Did I have poor cabin locations? seems this persons message went directly into cabins. I agree! I never can hear the announcements, but I thought it was my male selective hearing!
samscruiser Posted August 3, 2004 #21 Posted August 3, 2004 I think they have two "types" of announcements. General info annoucements only go into public areas. "Urgent" annoucements such as "Operation Blue Star" (medical emergency) go everywhere, even at 3 am in the morning.
frameking Posted August 3, 2004 #22 Posted August 3, 2004 I was on the miracle that week, and it was completely obvious from the start that it was a prank. From the girlish captains voice to the absence of the abandon ship horn. I was walking the decks ready to pee myself, looking at all the people in robes, underwear, suits, etc. Maybe a weird sense of humor, but you had to be there
serene56 Posted August 3, 2004 #23 Posted August 3, 2004 How did these people know how to go into a operationblue star?? and how is the dining room PA system tied up with all this? What i find scarey is that if this were to really happen.... will people pay attention or will they think its people playing? and if those people went ot the muster drill why were they panicing. I am sure that in an emergency we will not hear Abandoned ship - (lol) at least i hope not.
frameking Posted August 3, 2004 #24 Posted August 3, 2004 You would not hear it like they said it "This is your captain speaking. All crew members abandon ship" Then the real captain comes on and says "Dis is da real captain. De udder ting was yust a yoke by some kids. I'm sorry and good night" Still belly laugh when I picture it PS in the event of an actual emergency, the ear piercing horns are the tool that gets everybody serious.
Mooguy Posted August 3, 2004 #25 Posted August 3, 2004 The abandon ship was a little much they should have just stuck with "FREE drinks on the Captain in the lobby bar" or something like that if they had to do it at all.. My guess they had plenty of drinks. I was on the Sensation a few weeks back on the last night of the cruise we were in the piano bar til about 3AM when the few of us that were there left to go to bed the ship public areas were empty. I would think they would not of had that much trouble catching who did this since I am sure there was very few people out and about at this time on the last night.
