Safety Tips while in Port

Always be aware of your surroundings. Do your research if you're unfamiliar with a port. Keep to the tourist areas or organized tours if you're new to a port. There are some very seasoned cruisers out there that can go to a port and go off on their own, but they already know the ropes.;)

Bring a photocopy of your passport with you.

Be respectful of people. Say "hello" when entering shops. A simple "No thank you" when vendors are pesky.

Don't drink too much and lose awareness of your surroundings or the time.

Speaking of the time, try to be back on board an hour before sailing. This will allow for emergencies or traffic delays.

If you know any of the native language, try to use it. Good practice and often appreciated!

Just a few thoughts!

Along with photo copies of your passport, I always keep photo copies of our credit cards and leave them in our safe, just in case I need the numbers to report them stolen.

Depending on what port, I have a simple gold wedding band and inexpensive watch I wear, leaving the real stuff in my safe.

We both carry a little cash, just in case we are split up.

I also try not to flash cash or valuables around. I do carry a purse off the boat(for camera, water, wallet etc.) but I always make sure it is across my body and in front of me. I really am not sure how else to carry all that stuff safely.

*Speaking of not missing the ship, I always set an alarm on a watch to go off at least an hour and a half before we need to be back at the ship. It is just a reminder that its getting time to go.
