AdRock Posted August 3, 2004 #1 Share Posted August 3, 2004 Just wanted to know what some of your best tips were for staying safe while in ports of call. Thanks!
trish1c Posted August 3, 2004 #2 Share Posted August 3, 2004 Just be vigilent & don't take any stupid chances.
Tori101 Posted August 3, 2004 #3 Share Posted August 3, 2004 I try not to bring a purse ashore. I keep any cash, credit cards, and documentation in a holder around my neck under my clothes.
hstrybuf Posted August 3, 2004 #4 Share Posted August 3, 2004 Always be aware of your surroundings. Do your research if you're unfamiliar with a port. Keep to the tourist areas or organized tours if you're new to a port. There are some very seasoned cruisers out there that can go to a port and go off on their own, but they already know the ropes.;)
hdawson Posted August 3, 2004 #5 Share Posted August 3, 2004 Use the same precautions that you would at home.
lauren0309 Posted August 3, 2004 #6 Share Posted August 3, 2004 Don't walk down any sidestreets and stay in groups. Don't accept tours from any operators you are unfamiliar with. You could get robbed and be left in the middle of nowhere.
Travelgrrl Posted August 3, 2004 #7 Share Posted August 3, 2004 Bring a photocopy of your passport with you. Be respectful of people. Say "hello" when entering shops. A simple "No thank you" when vendors are pesky. Don't drink too much and lose awareness of your surroundings or the time. Speaking of the time, try to be back on board an hour before sailing. This will allow for emergencies or traffic delays. If you know any of the native language, try to use it. Good practice and often appreciated! Just a few thoughts! birdie16 Posted August 3, 2004 #8 Share Posted August 3, 2004 Along with photo copies of your passport, I always keep photo copies of our credit cards and leave them in our safe, just in case I need the numbers to report them stolen. Depending on what port, I have a simple gold wedding band and inexpensive watch I wear, leaving the real stuff in my safe. We both carry a little cash, just in case we are split up. Sophie Posted August 3, 2004 #9 Share Posted August 3, 2004 I agree with all of the above. I'll add only drink bottled water while in port, especially in Mexico! :o
ILoveJesse Posted August 3, 2004 #10 Share Posted August 3, 2004 I also try not to flash cash or valuables around. I do carry a purse off the boat(for camera, water, wallet etc.) but I always make sure it is across my body and in front of me. I really am not sure how else to carry all that stuff safely. *Speaking of not missing the ship, I always set an alarm on a watch to go off at least an hour and a half before we need to be back at the ship. It is just a reminder that its getting time to go.
