CarlandAndrea Posted March 29, 2007 #1 Share Posted March 29, 2007 Are there jewelry stores at these ports like the ones you find in the Caribbean? Thanks!
martinsfo Posted March 29, 2007 #2 Share Posted March 29, 2007 Not really. However, if you are into silver, Mexico is the place to get it. Forget Cabo for silver, very expensive, kind of schlocky stuff. PV and Mazatlan have great selection. Bargain, bargain, bargain. Stay away from the stores recommended by the shopping mavens on board. However, remember to go into stores with doors. Look for the silver
gottago2mexico Posted March 30, 2007 #3 Share Posted March 30, 2007 There are jewelry stores aplenty in all the ports in Mexico. If you go to the Golden Zone in Mazatlan, on Av. Playa Gaviotas near the Las Flores Hotel, it seems like that's all there is! Good quality (in the stores, not always from the beach vendors), good prices, great selection. Silver is prime, but there is also a wide selection of gemstones and even diamonds. There are good jewelry stores downtown and in Old Mazatlan as well - you'll get better stuff usually at a jewelry store than at the flea market. Puerto Vallarta also has many great shops downtown for jewelry - Pacific Jewelry is a good one - they have stores in all the ports. Cabo has them too - it is just more expensive for shopping of all kinds than the other ports - do an excursion there and save the shopping for Mazatlan or Puerto Vallarta. I'd always recommend to use a credit card if possible when buying jewelry - otherwise, if you get home and find out you didn't get the quality that was advertised you have no recourse. If you have a credit card, they offer fraud protection. Of course, the tradeoff is that if you pay cash, you have more bargaining power. Hope this helps, happy shopping! Albertians Posted April 6, 2007 #4 Share Posted April 6, 2007 On our last cruise to mexico last year - in the GOLDEN ZONE... a lady bought a stone paid for it... then gave a jewellery store CASH and her stone to set it - she also paid for the ring to set it in. The guy RAN OFF with her stone, ring and MONEY ! She was in tears... had to talk to the police and NOTHING WAS DONE ! She was very upset. I would never pay them or give them a stone that I purchased. Set it at home... never do that. Just thought her story could save someone some situation. It was from a reputable jewellery store too. IN the Golden Zone. How terrible. Was in Mazatlan. Be careful....

jlp20 Posted April 8, 2007 #6 Share Posted April 8, 2007 Are there jewelry stores at these ports like the ones you find in the Caribbean? Thanks! Small shops that sell overpriced crap, yes Chain stores that sell overpriced real shiny crap, yes Independent stores that sell locally made items where you might find a deal, yes. No matter what the name is on that watch, if you paid $50 for it, they paid $10. Real silver anything will cost more than $15. If they want $5 IT’S NOT SILVER NO MATTER HOW MUCH IT SHINES
Fblack Posted April 9, 2007 #7 Share Posted April 9, 2007 My wife bought some expensive Silver earrings in a well know store in Cabo. They broke in two weeks. Posts fell off. Totally useless now. Don't buy anything expensive in Mexico. It's not like the Caribbean.
Jenbo57 Posted April 11, 2007 #8 Share Posted April 11, 2007 Yes, they have many of the same stores as in the Caribbean, such as Diamonds International, Tanzanite International, Milano Diamond Gallery, etc. These are also the same stores you'll find at every port in Alaska! The cruise lines all make money off of these stores; if you feel like you've already given them enough, look for the shops that have 'locally owned and operated' in the window! Support the local economy!
daveco58 Posted April 11, 2007 #9 Share Posted April 11, 2007 In Puerto Vallarta, go to a store called VIVA, in Old Town on Basilio Badillo. They carry some really nice silver and other jewelry. It is locally owned, not a chain, and no swap meet garbage If you go, ask for Mike, and tell him "daveed fron Apel Bally" sent you. lol He has been taking care of me for years.
