How to best prevent sea sickness?

Hi,

I'm a first time Carnival cruiser and I am looking forward to a great cruise. But, I don't want my fun spoiled by the threat of seasickness (which I am very prone too). On this board I've read about Bonine and Ginger Caps but what I haven't really heard much about is "the patch". I want to drink and party alot during the week. What's your best recommendation?

Hi Dave welcome to CC and the Carnival boards. I have used the patch with out problems until I got home. I went thru all those side effects in the fine print.:( I like to have a drink or two and that is why I now just use the ginger. Works great and you can drink all you want (or can affored:D ) I have a bad problem with motion sickness (cars and small boats) but I really don't have hardly any problems with the big ships. Only when the seas get really ruff do I need the ginger.

Hope this helps some and you have a great cruise.

Don't cruise ......Just kidding.

Bonine, aka Meclizine, is my drug of choice. Take one the night before, or that day and you are good to go. I prefer to take one the night before since it makes me sleepy. Actually I take half. sleep it off and I'm ok the next day.

I have had very little trouble on my cruises with motion sickness. I have trouble with little boats like fishing and ferry boats. Im terrible when it comes to motion sickness. I get ill from watching my kids video games.

I have learned that if i keep something in my stomach, not much, but eat a little at a time, more frequently, I do not get seasick as much. Actually on the big ships, you do not notice it as much as on small ships. Even the sensation, I did not get seasick. But if you have a tendency to get seasick, take on pill before you get on the ship, and then one at dinner and at breakfast, you will not get sick.

I have vertigo, so if the seas are rough, I get sick. other than that, I did not need them except for the Tendering in to ports which I ended up in Belieze taking one before we went on the tender, one when we got on land, and one when we returned to the ship. I was ok then.

But I found that on the smaller ships like the casino boat, to keep something in my stomach.

I use the wrist bands that you purchase at the drug store. At most drug stores you have to ask for them. I put them on before we sail and keep them on for 24 hours and after that just put them on if seas get rough. i don't like the drugged feelings I get from the medication.

They've worked great for me.

I'm going to second the ginger idea. I don't get seasick, but DH does - and he didn't get sick on either of our cruises. We like being able to drink without contradicting the box. I will say that the ginger doesn't do a darn bit of good against what happens when you overdo the drinking =)

I have the foolproof way to avoid seasickness and enjoy your cruise. All of these other ideas are good in their own respect, but mine is guaranteed to work. Scroll down for the answer.

I was interested to know more about the wristbands. I like to have my wine :p on board and was wondering if you can do that wearing the wristbands with no side effects?

Bonine bonine bonine!!!!!!!!!! We've used it, had no problems, drank, and no seasickness........we start taking it a couple of days before the cruise, and take it all the way through. We don't feel tired, we drink, and we've had not even a hint of sickness.

No matter what you choose, good luck!!! :)

Ok, I agree that if you're planning on drinking a lot, use the ginger, drugs (even over the counter) and alcohol can have some nasty, unpleasant side effects over after effects. Peppermint or sour lemon type drops can also work. I'm a rollercoaster girl so I've not ever been motion sick however, my sister can't look at a merry go round without throwing up and she's fine on cruise ships. What I'd do is take something with you like the patch or another nausea medicine but try the ginger or candy first. That way you can start out drinking hard and if you can't handle the motion can have the option of changing to something stronger.

Oh, and here's the biggest tip.....stay AWAY from balconies!! lol....we've read enough about people falling overboard related to booze lately! :)

Just got off a transatlantic cruise with my wife and my sister. Wife was seasick on a transatlantic when she was young but has her "sealegs" now. I was once seasick on a small fishing boat in the Pacific, never on a cruise ship. Sister was on her first cruise, so an unknown factor. Bought SeaBands for all 3 of us. Them for seasickness, me for snoring [supposed to stop/reduce snoring].

The wristbands DO hold down the snoring [wife's testimonial].

Our 12 day cruise encountered gale force winds and 30 foot waves. We had to bypass Bermuda as they closed the port. We turned east and headed for the Azores with 20 footers almost a constant. The 12 days saw 7 of them in horrible weather and sea conditions. I wore the SeaBands at nite for snoring, then kept them on during the day when the seas were rough. Advised my sister to wear them all the time. Wife never put hers on.

None of us had a moments queasiness, SeaBands or "sealegs", don't know.

Sister might be a born sailor and Barb and I too experienced to be affected by rough seas. But maybe the bands helped a lot.

Worth the $7.00 ea at WallyWorld and the ONLY side effect is the residual wrist band when you take them off and maybe a tan line but we saw NO sun to cause any sort of tan line.

Still it was a great cruise.

On our first (and only) cruise, I had the little patch that goes behind the ear. I didn't put it on at first and then was sick the whole first night during dinner. Put it on immediately and was ok the rest of the cruise but I also didn't drink that cruise.

I am thinking that I'll be bringing ginger/bonine on the upcoming cruises this summer and the patch - take the ginger, if it doesn't work, then I'll switch to the patch. Honeymoon cruise = I'm going to enjoy myself :D

What is the dosing for Ginger tabs? We are leaving Sunday, and I have it packed (along with the Sea-Band, Peppermine Oil, and Bonine!). My husband is prone to sea-sickness so I want to make sure he is taking the Ginger is appropriate quantities. Thanks!

I'm a bit worried about getting seasick. I've never been on any boat before except for a short ferry boat ride in Galveston riding around Moody Gardens. I felt fine...of course I hadn't just eaten something.

I don't know if I will or not. I've been in a car for hours traveling and I was fine. But on open water for days....

Has anyone gotten sick when they thought they wouldn't?

On the first night of my first cruise (35 years ago), I was feeling a little green. A bartender told me that I could go to my cabin and be sick, or drink enough so as not to be able to tell if it was me or the boat that was rocking. I've followed his advice ever since, and I haven't been sick once!

for any Canadians aboard, try gravol or the generic brand of dymenhydrinate

from Zellers, zehrs or loblaws simply labelled 'Antinauseant".One pill before

bedtime does the trick and you don't have to give up the drinkies!

That was me a few weeks ago, armed with everything. My 11 yr old and I tried the ginger on our first morning after feeling a bit woosy. Worked great! Never needed it again. Dosage on bottle (550 mg) Adult: 1 capsule twice daily with meal. Already got it set aside for my July cruise :) .

I have used the patch during a cruise, but used it only coming and going since I was in bermuda and the ship doesnt have any other ports to go to... Not sure how the alcohol interacted (this is back in 04), but I def did drink on it. I'm sure I would rem if I got sick doing this...

The only precaution... I had blurred vision... couldnt see anything up close. Forget about trying to read the dinner menu without holding it as far as your arms can reach LoL Other than that, the patch worked pretty damn good since crossing the Atlantic can be a bit rocky and it def was on my sailing!!

Thanks - I have never really gotten sick on board but I am taking Ginger for the first time this cruise for 2 of the excursions we are taking where people have said that the roads are so windy that alot of people got sick. I am hoping that this will be a good preventative for myself as I get very carsick.

After 14 cruises, and trying everything, I swear by ginger capsules!!! They work the best, with no side effects whatsoever. Remember, if you do get seasick, EAT something, even if you don't want to. Apples work well, and ginger ale. Dramamine or Bonine just knocks me on my butt, even the nondrowsy kind. Tried ginger for the last three cruises, worked better than anything else, and I felt GREAT. :)

If you are worried about any kind of seasickness and drinking, you need what they call a relief band. You can buy one at Aeromedex.com. It is the only thing that I use and is drug free. I use it to fly, to cruise etc. and can now actually enjoy it! It is like a watch that you pu on the inside of your wrist. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me. I would not go any other way!

I get motion sick so i bought some candied ginger from the health food store, Took it Whenever i felt a little queezy, tasted fine, easy to eat, and worked great. (its just surgared and dried )

Last night of cruise we had real rough water, i needed more than ginger, after taking a pill and ginger, still felt queezy, but i forced myself to eat a good meal (with lots of salt) and then felt great after. Another cure is carbonated water, with salt and Lime. Hope this helps
