cberge Posted May 9, 2007 #2 Share Posted May 9, 2007 Are these two different cities? I thought Cobh was a different spelling for Cork. They are two different cities.Cobh used to be called Queenstown and was the last stop for the Titanic. It is a small pleasant city to wander around.Cork is much larger and has lots to do in and around it. operafan Posted May 11, 2007 #3 Share Posted May 11, 2007 Are these two different cities? I thought Cobh was a different spelling for Cork. Cobh is the port city. Cork is about 15 miles away by train. It's also simple to get to Cork from Cobh as the train stops right at the port. We were there 10 days ago and it couldn't have been easier! luvnorway Posted May 11, 2007 #4 Share Posted May 11, 2007 BTW, just as a point of interest - Cobh is pronounced "Cove" - I took the Titanic Walking Tour once when we were there and the guide told us that it is the Gaelicized (Irish) spelling of the English word. Many Irish names are Anglicized versions of Gaelic words, this is the reverse.
ruthandjohn Posted May 20, 2007 #5 Share Posted May 20, 2007 Was just there on the Celebrity Constellation. There is a very good immigrant museum right where your ship will probably dock (opens at 10AM) and a Titanic museum in the old White StarLine office now the Titanic Pub up the street. Nice, slightly hilly town to walk around, church, seafront. Ruth

Rare Hlitner Posted May 22, 2007 #7 Share Posted May 22, 2007 We were also just there (in late April) as part of the Jewel of the Seas transatlantic cruise. The train station is right in front of the ship, but it actually made more sense to take the cruise line's shuttle bus since they only charged $5 per person and the buses left right away whereas the train ran a very infrequent schedule. The maritime museum (exibits on the Titanic and Lusitania) is located right next to the pier and its worth a visit. If you decide to take a tour or go to Cork you might want to come back a bit early and do the museum (a 2 minute walk from the gangway). 2ladies Posted May 27, 2007 #8 Share Posted May 27, 2007 On our Navigator ta last month, many people booked the e-coach all day tour. Very inexpensive and by all reports, well worth it!!
